Huge 70lb. Catfish-Biggest I’ve ever seen on the Catawba River

- This day started off with a super slow bite and ended with a truly huge catfish. My good friend Dean Lawson has certainly caught his fair share of big blues over the years, but this behemoth 70 pounder broke his own personal best from years ago of 67 lbs. This was the biggest catfish I have ever seen taken out of the Catawba, at least below Lake Wylie Dam to Fishing Creek. I’m sure there have been bigger ones that I don’t know about, but this was definitely the biggest I’ve ever seen or heard of at the time that we filmed this video. Like always, we took pictures and video, then released this fish healthy and alive back into the Catawba River. Hopefully this fish will continue to thrive so all of us have the opportunity to catch it again when it's 90-100lbs!!!!

Hey Glenn… It definitely was a beast. And when you’re trying to land a fish on the bank of that size you kind of got a 50-50 shot at it because of all the downed trees etc. just off of the bank there. He did a really good job of letting the fish wear itself out in deeper water before he reeled him in towards the shore. Thanks so much for taking time to watch man!!!

That’s awesome. I just moved out here. I used to bank fish the neuse and cape fear river. I’m wanting to know where some awesome bank fishing spots are I can get to by foot to get to the big boys. I like to fish at night for the big daddies. So somewhere I could maybe fish at night and it be ok

Flint Hill Catfishing For some reason I never did fish on the Catawba. Not sure why but just always went on Wylie. I’m in Greenville SC now. Need to get back into fishing really but just haven’t had a ton of time the past few years.

bighook... it was definitely the biggest fish that I’ve ever seen in person except in a few videos I’ve seen on RUclips from other RUclipsrs. It was just so good to see a fish that size pulled out of a fishery right in my backyard. I have put multiple 30 and 40 pounders back in the river as well as three that were over 50, so I’ve been wondering how big those guys must be by now.😂 they must be doing well in this river to get that size and age. Hey I was wondering about fishing in the Catawba river where are some good spots and what are your favorite rigs to use . Also nice video and fish!
Cross Fish ... Hey thanks so much for watching man! I usually look at Google earth and find sharp bends in the river, current breaks like rapids that drop off into deeper looking water and big eddys etc. After I scour over Google earth, I look for a boat ramps that are nearby. Are use lots of different variations of the Carolina rig along with large floats for suspending baits. Where about to you live? Maybe I’ll see you on the river one day. Do you fish from the bank or a kayak or both?

Ugly Stick makes a white Catfish rod that’s works great and they are like $40 at Walmart. I don’t use spinning reels very often because the line capacity is lower on them unless you get a huge one. I prefer the Abu García round reels. There are expensive ones and there are some for around 50 bucks. I have quite a few rods & reels that cost a lot more than the combo I’m suggesting to you.....for the money you can land a big fish and still enjoy the fight with a smaller fish with the combo I suggested.sinkers I use are between 2oz and 5oz

I'm a bank bound catter as well. Lancaster reservoir is where I fish at on Saturdays or Thursdays. I do well with the bullheads there this time of year. Does a suspended hook bait produce better luck?
naughtydorf18 ... when I’m fishing from my kayak I usually use beats on the bottom and I suspend at least one rod on a slip bobber maybe 46 feet off the bottom or sometimes 10 feet up off the bottom and I’ve had really good luck and aggressive takedowns.

I go down to cedar creek and below the dam at great falls
catawba mudbums... I have fish some down around Route nine and stumpy pond. I don’t know a whole lot about Cedar Creek in some of that area. I’d love to get down there and check it out sometime
It is a very good place to go fishing down around there especially when you can get out there in a Jon boat or a kayak
