+supermotardmario so it's more like they can weld which may prove an annoyance once and a while but for the most part it won't happen. but instead of welding, most of the large scale construction will actually be vapor deposition to build up thicknesses in walls.

Not true. Taylor had a hyperbaric program that used seasoned, pv certified welders. Over a one year period only one welder made it to the north sea, was blown down in sat, and got into the bell. As soon as the diver opened the hatch and the welder stared at the moon pool he said f no. From then on, Taylor trained its divers under Blackie's tutelage and it became a successful program.

name's Zeus yes it is the oxydizer in such a reaction, but you still need a puncture in the tank for anything to happen and you need a flamable thing that's coming in contact with the gas (which has to be at quite a high temperature) to make any sort of reaction happen and since you only carry oxy and argon down there, there's nothing to worry about. ;)

I remember underwater welding in dive school still. When I was top side tender I recall the thick rust colored cloud of smoke that just hovered on the surface of the pond while the divers welded. Kinda cool yet disgusting all at the same time. But the welding part was pretty cool with all those tiny hydrogen bubbles making little explosions while you weld. Fun times.

Probably a dumb question however i must ask, How do you keep from getting electrocuted by your arc welder while welding under water. I am sure there is some sort of special welder as well as rods for underwater welding in particular but you still need many amps in order to weld, Granted the voltage is not much but it would still light you up pretty good. I have experience welding with stick and wire feed and have been zapped by them both its not comfortable so i would imagine being zapped while you are surrounded by very conductive salt water would not be so comfortable either.

and you dont get between the ground and the electrode so the electricity is never flowing towards you.
