Hi. Thanks for the video. How long do you let the stain dry before painting? THEN how long do you let the paint dry before painting a second color...i.e. white band and black writing.
The stain takes a bit longer to fully dry so I let it sit overnight to be sure its dry. And not as long for the paint as I use chalk paint and that dries a bit quicker. Maybe 20 min in between? Hope this helps

Thank you so much Brooke ❤️ I paint one side and let dry for a bit before I paint the other side, but while it dries I out it on a separate paint can to dry 😉 the chalk paint i use dries really really quick. Hope this helps
Just subscribed and I did my first sign and this video helped a lot! I just have 1 question! After staining, would you recommend letting it dry for 24 hours before doing anything to it? I used 631 vinyl and I had some lifting but I had only let it dry for about 2 hours. Would letting it dry for 24 hours prevent that? I was still about to do it but it took a little longer than expected.
Thank you so much 🥰 I would recommend waiting a few hours or even a day in between layers. I've never had an issue with stain pulling up though. Did you stain then use paint? 631 is perfect its non permanent
@@icreatecrafts8462 i did 2 coats of stain, I didn’t use any paint. I was putting the stencil directly onto the panel no paint. What had lifted what the vinyl when I went to remove the transfer tape. I was able to lay it down but it took a while to do since it was lifting. The stain was fine no lifting it was just the vinyl itself.
I see...so if I use stain I usually dont use vinyl I use vinyl for a decal but rather use the vinyl for a stencil then paint and take off. Hope that makes sense? If your going to use a decal to stay on I would use 651 its permanent
Hi Candis, I was looking at the sign you made it says welcome hope you like dogs did you do that as a stencil or a decal? If I do it on a decal is it best to do it individually like well come Then the next lettering then the next lettering individually and put them on there individually or should I just do a whole decal and it’s an 18 inch round
Hi sorry not sure who Candis is, my name is Jen. I created that stencil using 631 vinyl. I create it all at once and create one stencil. You can do other colors as well if painting this, just use a small makeup sponge. But if using a cricut machine remember you can only create a stencil 11.50×11.50. Hope this helps
Your welcome 😊 I use 120 or 150 grit sand paper. Just enough so its smooth to the touch. And be sure to wipe it down before you paint/stain. Happy Crafting 😊
Is there a specific reason as to why you used white chalkboard paint and not just white acrylic paint and then put a polyurethane coat on afterwards? I really love what you've created and I want to try and make this myself for the first time this week!
Well I love chalkboard paint. It dries really quick, it's easy to sand and it seems to be thicker so i just choose to use that over acrylic ;) I always put polly on my signs especially if they will be put outside. If it rains or snows on the sign without sealing it, the paint will run for sure. Plus it keeps it from fading. I hope this helps?
Glad I found your channel this is one of the best videos I’ve seen. I purchased 3 rounds 18” seems a bit heavy for a door but I will try it Couple of ? If you don’t mind When you did the stain and gave it 3 coats did you let each coat dry for 24 hours? I use a cameo but really the same thing didn’t understand the slice part? What painters tape did you use never saw green? When you painted over the vinyl and you did more than one coat how long do you need to let the first coat dry? Like your thinking it’s home made and doesn’t have to be perfect I’m with you on that The wood from amazon that you said was thinner is it kind of cheap looking or ok? Beautiful sign Going to check out your other videos Sorry for all the ? Newbie
Great questions! And I'm glad you found me too lol. The ones I bought from menards are a bit heavier than the ones I bought from Amazon but are good quality. When I stained it I gave a few hours in between...I dont know the cameo software so I cant help you there sorry...I think the green tape is less adhesive than the regular blue painter's tape is, I bought it from menards or Amazon. I let each coat dry for a few hours up to the next day...I hope this all helps ;)
Hi, just found your channel thank you for the tutorial! I subscribed right away! Ive got all the supplies except the sponges, where did you buy the make up sponges please?
Thank you for subscribing 😊 this sign was so much fun to make. I bought the sponges from Amazon I believe, but I think you can get some from the dollar store. Happy Crafting, thanks again for subscribing, make sure to hot that bell icon to get all of my notifications.
Love the last name :) that's mine. Well thank you for watching my video. I've had problems like that in the past...I found out if you sabd it really well before painting and then a little after painting the vinyl sticks much better. Could you try that? Just a light sanding and wiping down the dust? Please let me know if that works
@@icreatecrafts8462 I will give it a try! I also didn't put down any clear coat or poly which I have seen a lot of people put down. Would that make a huge difference for it to stick or not?
I dont use polly before I put down before I paint or before I lay vinyl, but i have seen others do that. I'll use polly after my project is finished though

Thank you so much :) I just looked back on all of my projects and I can't find this one :( I don't remember what font I used, I am sorry. I know it was one that I had to weld together...I know that doesn't help
Sorry to hear this, sometimes I have the same issue. I changed my paint to acrylic and that helped some. Also is your wood sanded really smooth? That's a huge thing...it needs to be sanded really well before painting.
Great question. I make sure my wood is well sanded and the bottom layer of paint is dry so that the vinyl adheres well. I've had a few times where it sadly peeled up the paint. I think it wasn't sanded well. Good luck, hope this helps
Great question. You can use both, but I prefer using a brush and can because the few times I used a spray can I had large bubbles appear on my signs or the can would drip and those drips would dry that way. It's all your choice and preference 😉 hope this helps
@@icreatecrafts8462 thank you so much for a quick reply. I planned on picking up the items in a few. I just saw I have both of them :) but I will try this today. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you for the tutorial on how you do your wood rounds. System fonts are those that are downloaded on your computer already and you don't need a license to use they have nothing to do with Cricut fonts. But those you personally added that you do not have permission to use especially from Dafont you do have to have a commercial license like you said.

I just noticed how the frog tape made the gray look slighter different after you pulled it off. Is that typical? Is it because it's the frog tape vs the blue painters tape or do you always get that variation when using tape?
I never noticed it until you said that. I have never used tape before for any of my projects to be honest. And this was my first time creating a sign like this. I will be creating another one soon, a Christmas sign ☺ I will have to see if I can buy some blue tape and try that to see if it does the same thing. Weird I never saw it before you said that
@@icreatecrafts8462 it might be just that it's more visible on camera but not really noticeable in person. 🙂 Thank you for this video, its really thorough and helpful! You've inspired me to make one.
Thank you for this video. Did you weed out the stencil prior? I never saw it. I am very frustrated at what I’m trying to do... I wanted to paint over my stencil so that when I weeded after, I could weed and the grain of the wood (which is stained gray) would show, but there is no way my stencil with only the letters will stick to my wood, so I will be using this approach.... The sign looks great and I love it, I’m just a little confused about the making of the stencil and the box behind it. I will need to watch a few times more to understand.... My confusion is why do the box ? Why not weed out the letters and stick the remainder of the vinyl on the sign? I suppose I need to do it both ways to make sense of it. It’s just not registering in my brain 😬
Thank you for the comment, I will do my best to answer. I try to not make my videos too long and boring where people wont watch, so sometimes i leave the weeding part out. I reverse weeded the vinyl, meaning i took out the letters and left the other part behind. The reason I created the box was because it would have been hard to paint over the reverse vinyl part without being extremely careful not to get paint where I didn't want it. I hope this makes sense, without the box I wouldn't have extra error room (if I over painted) I hope this helps? It's an extra step but really helped me out.
@@icreatecrafts8462 Thank you. I get why you did the box, but why would you not reverse weed and just use the existing vinyl that was left as room for error.? This is what I just cannot seem to grasp. Speak to me like I am 3 years old lol
I'm confided now...I did reverse weed, I pulled out the vinyl letters rather than leaving them in and painting over them. Maybe that's what you mean? Why not use the letters by themselves? In that case, it's because I wanted the letters white and black behind the letters. I hope this helps and makes sense?? Please let me know
Oh no. I have had this happen before. It was due to not having it sanded enough. Sounds counterintuitive, but the surface needs to be flat and have no rough spots. Also are you trying to stick vinyl to stain? I know that won't work either. Hope this helps? Best of luck. All mine are trial and error
I'm new to this, if I want to make multiples for Xmas gifts do I need to make multiple welcome stencils or just one? Does that make sense? Can I reuse that welcome piece? Thanks!!
Welcome to crafting ☺ people do use a stencil more than once, but I havent, when I make mine I use orical 631 out if vinyl so when I'm done I peel it up so it rips and is unusable. I think there is a plastic stencil you can cut out to reuse, but I've never tried it. So if you want to make multiples youd probably have to make multiples. Hope this helps? Happy Crafting
That's a great question. To be honest I havent had a problem with the chalk paint, but I have with acrylic paint. That's why I love to work with the chalk vs the acrylic. Too many times my vinyl even 631 peeled up my paint and destroyed my project. Hope this helps 😊
Im sorry I thought i responded to your question already :( No I do not mirror this image because its going on the front part if it was glass then I would mirror. Hope this helps
I am trying to create a stencil for a round sign. Every time chose the circle shape and size to 14” I get an error message “ not supported by explore “. What am I doing wrong?
Are you using a cricut? The biggest it will go is 11.50x11.50 for a small mat and 11.50x23.50 for a big mat. So 14 inch wont work. Do you need a whole 14 inch stencil? Or are you using it as a guide to how big your stencil is or wood board is?
@@icreatecrafts8462 I was using it as a guide, but after watching your whole video, it doesn’t really matter because you remove the circle anyway. Iyiy, my first project. And fist time using the Cricut. It’s a little frustrating, yikes thank you so much for replying so quickly. I really appreciate it.
Your welcome. Glad I could help. Yes I just used it for a template, it's more of a visual thing rather than centering or using. I do it for almost everything. Please let me know if I can help more 😊
@@DarkItalianPrincess6 hi yes you can do that just be really sure your wood is sanded really smooth otherwise your vinyl won't stick. You cam even sand really lightly after you paint just ne sure you wipe away the particles. Hope this helps

@@icreatecrafts8462 oh okay yes i see what you are saying now! Okay that makes better sense then. Thank you so much! 😊
Glad I could help
Thank you Jen ,Thank you so much for getting back to me so soon you’re wonderful. I love your Doriel you explain everything very very well thank you
Soooo excited to go home and try this out thank you for the tutorial! Is there a specific sandpaper you should use always ?
Hi! Where do you get the makeup sponges from? Thanks!
I think dollar tree has them, but I purchased mine from Amazon. Really good quality.
Glad I found your channel this is one of the best videos I’ve seen. I purchased 3 rounds 18” seems a bit heavy for a door but I will try it
Couple of ? If you don’t mind
When you did the stain and gave it 3 coats did you let each coat dry for 24 hours?
I use a cameo but really the same thing didn’t understand the slice part?
What painters tape did you use never saw green?
When you painted over the vinyl and you did more than one coat how long do you need to let the first coat dry?
Like your thinking it’s home made and doesn’t have to be perfect I’m with you on that
The wood from amazon that you said was thinner is it kind of cheap looking or ok?
Beautiful sign
Going to check out your other videos
Sorry for all the ?
Great explication oof Design Space! Just found your channel so I subscribed!

Love this!! Do you always use vinyl for the stencil?
Thank you 💖 yes I do, sometimes I use 631 non permanent vinyl or the blue stuff, can't think if the name lol
love it

Love it! Came out beautifully. Can't wait to try it myself.
Thank you so much. I love it, sold it quickly and want to make more
Hi, just found your channel thank you for the tutorial! I subscribed right away! Ive got all the supplies except the sponges, where did you buy the make up sponges please?

Thank you!!
Sorry I just saw this message 😪 what do you mean? How to take a font from dafont and add to design space?
I followed this video and couldn’t get my removable vinyl to stick to the wood! Any tips or tricks for that?
So I made my stencil and now I'm ready to print. Can I print this on the Cricut Vinyl or do I have to buy the Cricut Stencil material?
If your using it for a stencil I would recommend 631 which is not permanent and won't pull up your background color. Hope this helps
Thank you!!! I just bought a Cricut so this will be my first project! I love how detailed your directions are in this video :)
Yeah you're going to have so much fun 😉 glad I could help. Please let me know if you need any help along the way
Would you be able to just paint the middle part and make a white vinyl ?
Sure ;) I like to use paint instead of vinyl sometimes, but you can switch it up ;) great question
Cant wait to see it!
Jenell, love your hair color and really love the signs! This looks amazing! I just started the video but wanted to comment first! :)

Thank you so much :) I just looked back on all of my projects and I can't find this one :( I don't remember what font I used, I am sorry. I know it was one that I had to weld together...I know that doesn't help
I am trying this method on some christmas gifts but the vinyl keeps pulling up my paint. I had let it dry in sun and i used oracle 631.
Sorry to hear this, sometimes I have the same issue. I changed my paint to acrylic and that helped some. Also is your wood sanded really smooth? That's a huge thing...it needs to be sanded really well before painting.
Does it have to be spray sealant?
Yes if you plan on hanging it outside in the elements. Protects it better 😉
Is chalkboard paint better than regular acrylic?
In my opinion yes. I love using chalk paint, not only does it dry faster but it seems to coat better and sand much better than acrylic 😉
How do you stop your stencil from lifting your white paint?
Great question. I make sure my wood is well sanded and the bottom layer of paint is dry so that the vinyl adheres well. I've had a few times where it sadly peeled up the paint. I think it wasn't sanded well. Good luck, hope this helps
Can we use the polycrylic in the jar like the the wood stain comes in or it has to be a spray form?
Great question. You can use both, but I prefer using a brush and can because the few times I used a spray can I had large bubbles appear on my signs or the can would drip and those drips would dry that way. It's all your choice and preference 😉 hope this helps
@@icreatecrafts8462 thank you so much for a quick reply. I planned on picking up the items in a few. I just saw I have both of them :) but I will try this today. Thank you so much!!!

@@icreatecrafts8462 thank you!!! I made my bow different and it wouldn’t work with the flowers behind it. But it came out perfect :)
Thank you for the tutorial on how you do your wood rounds. System fonts are those that are downloaded on your computer already and you don't need a license to use they have nothing to do with Cricut fonts. But those you personally added that you do not have permission to use especially from Dafont you do have to have a commercial license like you said.
Good to know I always thought those fonts were the free ones from cricut lol. Now I know thank you
Love the sign! Thanks for sharing! What kind of GREEN TAPE do you use for such crisp lines??
Thank you so much 🥰 I think it was Frog Tape and a lot of rubbing with my scraper to be sure it was down securely. Hope this helps

Probably it since I didn't see it. I'm going to go back and look lol. Glad your going to create one, I'd love to see it when your finished
Can you paint instead of staining? What is the difference
Yes of course, I just chose to stain first. You can create it however you'd like ;) have fun
Please let me know
Help! I sanded, stained and chalk painted, but no stencil, not temp vinyl, stencil vinyl or even permanent vinyl, will stick to the wood.
Oh no. I have had this happen before. It was due to not having it sanded enough. Sounds counterintuitive, but the surface needs to be flat and have no rough spots. Also are you trying to stick vinyl to stain? I know that won't work either. Hope this helps? Best of luck. All mine are trial and error
I got d rounds at Lowes. 15” they are heavy.
There are rounds on Amazon, they are very light weight...amzn.to/3EMPJjy
I'm new to this, if I want to make multiples for Xmas gifts do I need to make multiple welcome stencils or just one? Does that make sense? Can I reuse that welcome piece? Thanks!!
Welcome to crafting ☺ people do use a stencil more than once, but I havent, when I make mine I use orical 631 out if vinyl so when I'm done I peel it up so it rips and is unusable. I think there is a plastic stencil you can cut out to reuse, but I've never tried it. So if you want to make multiples youd probably have to make multiples. Hope this helps? Happy Crafting
Just wondering... do you ever have a problem because of the stickiness of the vinyl, peeling up any of the chalk paint?
That's a great question. To be honest I havent had a problem with the chalk paint, but I have with acrylic paint. That's why I love to work with the chalk vs the acrylic. Too many times my vinyl even 631 peeled up my paint and destroyed my project. Hope this helps 😊
How did the vinyl not stick to the wood when you used as stencil?
I used 631 which is non permanent and you can easily pull it up after :0 Hope this helps?
do you mirror these on the cricut design space?
Im sorry I thought i responded to your question already :( No I do not mirror this image because its going on the front part if it was glass then I would mirror. Hope this helps
Just an FYI polycrylic isn't meant for outdoors. You should be using water based spar urethane.
Huh really? I've always used poly on all of my outdoor items. Never had a problem. Thanks I'll be looking into that ;)
Where did u purchase this wood
I purchase my wood from Menards
