Ummm if I remember correctly I even have pics that I received it rusted SOOOO.... You're welcome for the content
CLASSIC!!!! LMAO
BOOM!!!🤣🤣
Hahahahaahahhahahaha
Love it 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lol
Another great video Jeremy. Kentucky looks good on you. I sense a renewed enthusiasm in your presentations and I really appreciate the tips you pass to all your subscribers. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for this video! I live in WA and dealing with rust is my biggest concern with my OCB Brazos!
Man! That was such a revelation! Thanks so much for the tip! Just got a new Oklahoma Joe Longhorn and I want to keep it as nice as possible. Going to order some smoke gauge and sealant for the leaks, but will keep it covered and oiled to prevent the rust. Have a blessed one.
Love all your videos. Everytime I see you doing something I'm already doing, I feel like I'm doing something right.
First, I noticed your smoker on bricks. I had mine on stepping stone pavers to prevent rust from wet ground.
I didn't spray mine before every cook but that was part of my care with the same thought of treating it like a cast iron pan. One tip... Spray from the bottom up...One reason. When an aerosol can is full the spray angle doesn't matter very much. As it gets empty you'll need to hold it almost perfectly right side up. Starting from the bottom you'll get more out of it than finishing at the bottom with a nearly empty can having to hold it at an upright angle. Please keep up the content. Thanks for sharing these tips.
Works like a charm, sweet information. Made perfect sense when you described as a cast iron pan!
That’s 2 videos in a row that are awesome 👏🏻 fantastic tips thank you so much.
Thanks for taking time to share this content. I'm gradually going through it. 👍🏽
Literally learning with every video thank you so much for dropping knowledge!
Excellent advice! I'll be doing this from now on. Thank you
Just did this after watching your video. Came out nice. Thanks 👍
I always love you’re choice of music!
Great videos, thank you for sharing all this valuable information. My Char-Griller is over twenty years old and have covered it with bacon grease from day one, you can imagine how good it smells everytime it gets fired up. It not show room perfect, but it looks decent and has retained its strength and definitely produces some of the most delicious tasting smoked meat I've tasted. Your videos have greatly improved my success at smoking BBQ.
Interesting that you don't have to sand it down before spraying the oil... learned something new👍🏾
Perfect timing! I planned to deal with rust on my Old Country Wrangler tomorrow. Very helpful...Thanks!
How did it turn out? I’m currently trying the same on my wrangler here in Texas! Have you done any mods to it? I’m looking to replace the rack in the firebox, may have to make one.
I know every welder/ fabrictor is screaming right now for u too Wire brush the surface before spraying. Clean your metal is something you'll here often in a fab shop.
Ya it seems like something you would want to do if it looked like that just because it can't hurt right it's already rusted
I was thinking the same thing
To. Not too.
But then again... you didn't become a metallurgist because of your high IQ.
This makes sense. Thanks for the tip! My smoker is definitely on the rusty side right now. Time to fix it!
Same here. Rust took over
Really appreciate all your advice man. Thank you so much
I bought the cover for my Old Country pit. The fire box is still getting rusted but not that bad. Will do this anyway to prevent it from getting worse. Thanks for the video.
Great tip Jeremy. I built an octagon 48"x24" offset with a 24"x24" firebox. I put it outside one day before I painted it and of course it rained so now the whole thing is rusty. I'm thinkin this will be much easier to do than painting it. Great video brother.
What did you end up doing? Did your oil treatment of the entire pit work better than high heat paint?
Thanks for the video Danny!
Nice restore job man! Offset is looking good 👍
Great video! I was worried the firebox would get to hot for this to be effective. Glad to hear it isn’t to hot. I’m guessing the cook chamber wouldn’t get hot enough to do that to without specifically lighting a fire in the cook chamber and that doesn’t sound like a good idea to me with cleaning it out and all. So I guess if the cook chamber was sprayed like that it would just get tacky because the oil never fully cured on it?
Awesome video. In recent years I've actually moved to Linseed oil. Works really well, water beads up like car wax. On the outside only, not in the cook chamber.
I always thought linseed oil was highly flammable. Interesting.
Preach it brotha! Same deal as seasoning cast iron.
Welcome home cuz. Love this video helped a lot
Dude you are very knowledgeable. It’s really awesome you put 100% research into everything. One day I’ll see you on JRE
Oh, and that red PK is sick af.
Great video, appreciate the info.
That was amazing! Love your BBQ science.
Awesome! I was looking for a video about this a week ago, great content.
I just came back and watched this again. Getting the stick burner out tomorrow for the first time since November.
Great video, and thank you for the information. My smoker looks much better than it did. I decided to buy a quart of cheap canola oil and use a 3" disposable brush to apply it after seeing the price of the spray cans(4x more expensive). I ran into no issues doing this, but I could see why the can would be more convenient especially with larger pits.
Thanks for the refresher course.
Thanks Jeremy, got to give this a try 👍👍
Thanks Danny
At first I was thinking you needed a grinder and hi-temp paint, But afterwards I was thoroughly impressed!
No need to paint it.
Dude awesome video! I seriously didn't want to sand and paint. My box was looking horrible and I did this with great results.
What type of spray did you use and how many times did you repeat the process to get the results that you have now?
@@ryans381 basic vegetable oil will work. Just coat the firebox nice and thick once. You won't hurt the metal, no need to be hesitant about this.
Well done brother def learned something
Is there an OCB Brazos owner club? If so, sign me up! I started watching this channel because you were using your Brazos, which I had just purchased. (I actually bought the Deluxe version, which all I can tell means it has the counter-balance bar on the lid.) Anyway, I'm glad to see you got your Brazos back. I want to send my THANKS to Dani for motivating you to show us fellow club members on how to take good care of our little investments! From now on, I will for sure be using this method. Thanks for all the great videos! Forget that "set it and forget it" 500 gallon model...show us noobs more on how to use the "every man's" models.
I've used Krylon or Rustoleum Rust Converter/Reformer spray first if there is rust in case its a little deeper than superficial then oil treatment
Thanks for the video, I will have to say, you've given me something to think about. There was a time I tried keeping up with my grill with the grill paint they sale, waste of money and time, didn't last as long as it took me to paint it. What I found that does work is engine paint rated at 2000 degrees, I'm not sure about the 2000 deg, but it does not burn off my smoker. I had some concern about the chemicals in the paint, but I only do the outside, and can't imagine it getting to the food. However, I am going to give some thought to using oil instead when little rust spots do pop up.
Glad to see the brazos made the trip with you!
Thanks for the video!
Appreciate the information.
Great lesson.
Thanks for the video very informative!!!
The video I needed, thanks
Love your videos! Don’t worry about getting to nerdy explaining rust! I love your channel for the nerdy stuff!! Now that your in Kentucky maybe you do some nerdy bourbon videos!! Thanks!!
The last part was worth so much to me. I haven't even considered doing preventative maintenance on the outside before each cook. I assume that you can use the same technique for the inside to prevent rust build-up?
Thanks for this info Jeremy...much appreciated. Do you do the same on the inside as well or...?
Great video! Any tips on cleaning the cook chamber itself?
Great tips thanks 👍
Hell yeah, Kentucky here as well.
Man, thank you for this. I was just looking at my offset yesterday. Rust on the bottom of the firebox. I was thinking it might be on its way to becoming trash. I can’t wait to do this! Again, thank you, sir. 👍🏼👍🏼
Go Broncos!
@@phillipjarvis2109 yes, sir!!
How did it turn out?
So do we thank Danny for the content this time?
Love all your videos. I have rust in the inside of my firebox. Do you recommend the same treatment?
Very Helpful!
Im going to try this
Your back yard is beautiful bro.
Amazing tips! Your videos are very useful to us and easy to understand :) btw do you think it is okay to use canola oil from the fryer (i mean used oil) to clean the smoker?
Good Idea, I am 75% done building a RV smoker But the other day I came across a different tank that I thought was aluminum, took it home and a magnet sticks to it like steel, so its Stainless steel 30" around and about 5' long, so now the idea is to cut off the current tank that is only 20" around and 4' long and use the SS tank and remake racks and figure out if I can stick weld it to 1/2 AC3 steel firebox. I am having to much fun making one can't wait to finally try cooking on one once the project is done.
If you want to remove rust pretty easily, make a baking soda and water paste and dab it on the rusty areas. Leave for about a half hour and then rub with some steel wool. Comes right off.
This would also be a good time to practice with your fire management and maintaining a steady temperature.
Thanks for the great video! How would you handle an insulated firebox?
It's so beautiful once it turns all glossy black like that 😍
On cooking chamber to keep that similar, I thought somewhere I seen to use 50/50 water vegetable oil is that what you believe. Great vidieo I like your brazos.
1. Spray rust with oil
2. Start a fire
3. Cover smoker
Jeremy, I have to buck you on this one, you should use Cooking Spray on the inside and Mineral Oil on the Outside of the FireBox Works very Well
Hey buddy what’s a mineral oil, and if u had surface rust inside and sprayed then lit fire to heat the whole thing would it be ok.
perfect! just bought a smoker off craigslist and excited to give this a try! heading to costco later this week and i'll put some spray oil on the list.
now. how about rust on the interior!?!
You have no idea how this will help me. I just bought an Oklahoma Joe's offset smoker. My last charebroil smoker I had for 10 years and the fire box rusted all the time. So........ Sir. I thank you very much.
Jeremy, could you ever use a sacrificial anode? Do you think that would be very helpful if it was easy to attach?
More videos on the brazos plz!
Thank man.
“Just like cast iron” I coat mine in Crisco.before, and after.
Thanks!
Thanks for your Utube videos, everything I've learned has been from your excellent videos!
coupla questions, who does your background music and have you ever done a review on the "Good-one" smoker which I consider an offset in a different direction.
Wow you leave in KY ? in leave in KOX, TN , I need to come one day to see when you make BBQ LOL
Hey man, can you coat it with oil while it’s hot or does that change the chemistry?
Coming at you from Nashville!
My Pecos is almost in need. Great video, thanks!
What's the difference between the Pecos and the Brazos? I don't have any academy sports close by to look at them close up.
@@ComparisonCooking Brazos is 1/4" steel the Pecos is a little thicker than sheet metal with 3/16th door trim.
@@ericakred4714 and about $600
Thanks for the video. How thick of gauge metal do you recommend for smokers?
This just happened to me. Thank you!
You loaned your smoker to Danny too? That guy need to learn to take care of other people's things.
Thank you for the information. Did not know if you leave ashes in box that speeds up rusting process. I normally clean out before each cook.
The reason is that ashes attract and trap moisture. Then you have a problem.
Good to know
Hey Jeremy, fellow Kentuckian here. If you ever get a chance, would you check out Blue Door Smokehouse? A hole in the wall. I'd like to know your opinion about the brisket (Texas style) there. It was the best Ive ever had in a KY restaurant so far. The pit master said it takes them 14-15 hours a night to prepare.
I just bought a used Blackstone that was just purchased in October. They left it outside uncovered and some rust formed on the back of it. I’ll have to give this a try and see if it will remove the rust. Thank you.
Food for thought
What about the cooking chamber? Light it in there or? I don’t have an offset yet but will be starting with a cheapy one to start. Thanks for the info!
Great background music.
Thanks for video, my pit is 4’ long and 24 in diameter, no smoke box. The back part is rust and the top is still paint black, do I spray or brush oil on entire pit then lit it. Hope to hear from you.
this works, trust me, I've done it for years 👍
Game changer
Nice!
Come on Danny. What the funk!!!
This is cool dude, thanks. Have you ever had it catch fire though?
what if you have a little rust starting to build up on the inside of the fire box? is it ok to put a little oil inside the fire box?
Ok, I got a fairly cheap grill & smoker. I coated everything with Pam canola spray. I built a hot fire to do like you said but because the metal was thinner on the offset smoker the paint blistered and now I have rust. Would wire brushing it, then adding a heat resistant paint (on the outside) , then using canola oil on it again help ?
I bought an old country peco's at academy sports (Academy has only been there 6-7 ish years? and I never considered looking for a grill at a "sports" store) on outer loop 4-5 years ago for 399 and couldn't believe what I got for the price. I used a weber kettle for years because there was not a quality offset to be found in the area. Didn't want to spend 400-500$ for a 22" WSM. Thought about making a vertical extension (Still Am) for the kettle. That being said, the first few time's I cooked on my offset I realized that I didn't have a clue on how to cook with it. So I hit up ytube and found your video's...the first one you were doing cook at some nice place with a pool in the background. Watching many more of your video's, recorded with california in the background, I thought you were somebody out in cali making grilling video's. A few month's ago I watched your wague? beef rib video at home for x-mas with the family...shortly there after your back. Dude I can't believe your form the ville, small world. Welcome Back!....Bet you don't stay to long though unfortunately. BTW, I will be treating the peco's like a cast iron pan from now on....Thank You!
P.S. maybe a vid on good lousiville bbq that you find?
Good Job Danny! You had one job to do and you blew it.
What are your thoughts on using food grade mineral oil on the outside instead of cooking spray?
Good information, thanks.
I won't be loaning my smoker to Danny, does he store it partially submerged in a swimming pool?!
Maybe he live close to the ocean with that oh so wonderful moist salt air.
@@justplanefred fair point 👍
