What Hygiene Was Like For Medieval Peasants
HTML-код

- Although cleanliness in the Middle Ages was primitive compared to what modern people enjoy, it doesn't mean medieval hygiene didn't exist. Despite living in an era long before indoor plumbing, shampoo, and nail salons, people used the best hygiene practices they could. Unfortunately, they didn't have a lot to work with. Peasants had it especially bad and weren't often able to afford luxuries like more than one set of clothing. For the lower classes, personal hygiene in the Middle Ages meant keeping clean however you could, even if it wasn't easy.

As a medievalist, I’d like to say that all this information is correct at one point or another. However, we need to remember that these things were not actually the truth at all times and in all places, even somewhere as compact as medieval UK. Early medieval period was VERY different than later medieval period, for example. There were also easterners who migrated to the uk with very different styles of cleanliness. Not to mention there were more than just “brits” in medieval UK (Picts, Scandinavians, Celts) whom all had separate ideas about cleanliness. Also I’m curious where you got your information for menstration but the twig thing is not really supported by historians since it’s fair to say that most women would at least have the brains to determine that a stick covered in cloth was painful. Women would more than likely wear a diaper-like wrapping to catch blood and there are fashion historians who have tested it out recently as well. Anyways, there’s a lot more I’d like to say but all in all, pretty much all spot with the actions but the picture is skewed to make it seem like people didn’t evolve and change for nearly 1000 years. The end.
Thank you! Saves me mentioning the length of time that age lasted. I'm not a mediaeval expert like you, but I do know that!

Seems like the roman lower class lived way better then the peasents in medieval times
It was. Medieval ages were just a continuation of the Dark Ages. Rome was a corrupt dictatorship in many ways due to countless horrible leaders. There were a small amount of actual good leaders with Historians noting that Antonius The Pious was the best emperor by his actions, lack of wars, he served Rome for over 20 years, then retired in a villa.
However even at its worst, Rome still had benefits that were lost when the empire collapsed. Trading, safety from marauders, nice and safe towns, a general leader, etc. With Rome gone, you could be taxed by several different landowners and be bullied into extortion by local tribes. There was no law and order after the Fall Of Rome. So yes, even the peasants during that period of time had more job opportunities than many medieval people.
No the video is just misleading. No that's not an equivalent comparison because you're imaging people living in the city of Rome and comparing it to deliberately selected 'horror stories' for people living in extreme rural environments that have been compiled over about 1,000 years of history.
This was informative. A great lesson of compare and contrast would be to compare the hygiene of medieval times with that of Egyptians.

@@JasmyneTheodora i meant in the sense that nowadays we are way more genetically diverse due to immigration/migration asshole. It was harder to travel back then so people from the same area were a hell lot more genetically similar compared to today
@@outsidechambaz If you were a peasant it was prob real hard man. Ofc people have always found a way to have fun, but how enjoyable can it be compared to today?
Raphy TheMighty Genetic diversity doesn’t change the way you’d think about things. You’re acting as if back then they were Cavemen or something. There are still people today who are as white as they were and as black as medieval Africa.
"Bacteria was *everywhere* for medieval peasants"
ya don't say
Umm doctor doggo there a bacterias on me and now I got pills you gave me and there where dog treats but they were good
some places still live like that to this day and I am among them
My history teacher made me watch this
Imagine having OCD
-- sounds like pure hell
I think OCD is a modern thing ....I could be wrong
ocd isn’t always a hygeine thing, theres different subtypes and that’s the contamination subtype
I dont think they have the luxury to develop ocd
I imagine it would still be around but relative to the hygiene standards of the time, since they wouldn't know any better.
"To remove ear worms"
WHAT THE FU-
"Which didn't exist"
Oh thank god
you can still get worms elsewhere in your body, including your brain :)
ThatSuaveRaptor If you translate word to word there is the German word ear worm which is just a song stuck in your head
I’m gonna go shower in warm water for 30 min and brush my teeth now.
After watching this, I now feel like I need a shower.
Fancy some company lol
There's still situations like this going on in the modern world, to our shame.
our shame? who are you refering to? It's a shame for the people that can't get themselves out of it like everyone else, yeah I agree. Is it a shame for modern countries that made their way forward? No.
@@Danuxsy
That's like saying if you're homeless, to just buy a house.
@@Danuxsy Your modern countries put many countries in poverty which have no solution but to flee from their country and live in the modern one.

Eh... i dryed all of my body

I think it's more so predicated on what part of the world you were born in not necessarily the era because certain parts of the world were very Advanced and their hygiene practices while other parts of the world we're not
