Are All Alcohol Inks Created Equal - Let's Find Out!

  • I have always said that all alcohol inks in resin fade really quickly and that you should avoid using them because of that. I love the look of alcohol inks in resin, they are fun and make some wonderful patterns, but the ones I have used in the past have always disappointed me as they have lost all their colour within a few weeks and sometimes even quicker if they are in a lot of light. Was I wrong about this? I test some alcohol inks that Daniel Cooper recommended to me, saying that they do not fade, I tested them over several months, and here are the results. Please check out Daniel Cooper's channel as he is a great artist.

Absolute legend Steve and great video! I'm so glad you tested these and had great results! Even more so, you are pushing the information out there to help a wider audience, it's such a shame that many artists are scared of alcohol inks, your information will help the community immensely and I for one, am truly grateful 🙏. Thanks for the mentions. Look forward to a collab soon 😊😊😊

Steve, I'm so glad you revisited this experiment! ❤ I've been mostly avoiding alcohol inks since your first experiment with Piñata inks was so disappointing to us all. Thrilled to see it really *was* the brand of ink - yay!
Thank you for the thumbs up for Daniel's channel. Between the 2 of you fellas & a other wonderful resin artists, I have learned SO much, and will continue to do so. 😊❤
BTW: I only have Let's Resin alcohol inks (because Piñata and Ranger inks were too expensive), and a few of the American made T-rex alcohol inks, which don't seem to have as much saturation as do the LR inks. I think I will do my own experiment with the T-rex inks and see how they fare!

I suppose as with all products a bit of research goes a long way and helps avoiding picking fading products. XD
It similar with acrylic paints if you want to use them to repaint figurines and such; choosing higher pigmented paints will save you a TON of work and you can only use those safely for airbrushing as well (since cheaper, low pigmented ones clog the airbrush pistol easily).
Good to know that these colours work tho, saves me the trouble of having to find ones myself. So thank you very much!

No, that isn't why the LR inks didn't fade. Steve uses saturated colors because he is colorblind to an extreme degree and needs the high saturation levels from a few layers just to see colors. Daniel did the same experiment last year using the LR products, but he rarely puts more than a single layer of color in any of his pieces. The colors are gorgeous! Daniel's never faded, either. 😊

Yup. Pinks are always the first to go. I had one lose it's color in all of about 5 minutes being exposed to the California summer sun.
I think it also has a lot to do with the concentration of pigments. The way the alcohol spreads them out gives the illusion that there's a lot there, but it's more alcohol than anything else.

Back when I worked in a craft store, we got to go to the craft expo. I thought Tim Holtz said that Ranger inks had a uv guard. That way they wouldn't fade. At least that's what I remember. It was like YEESH! 😱 30 years ago. 😳 Please tell me I'm wrong. I don't want to be so old.😓

I’m wondering if it’s only in UV resin that they fade in the sun. I had an initial “R” that I put in my car on the rear view mirror. It was pink and purple. Within just a couple of months it was clear. So it did completely disappear. Or maybe it’s because of the brand of alcohol inks….. 🤔
    As always, great video Steve.

? > Is India ink the same as alcohol ink? If not... do India inks respond the same in resin?
I have a nice large set of India inks, never used! 😊

After reading some of the comments, I wonder if the JDiction resin played a part in keeping the alcohol ink colors more true, as well.???

I've used both brands of resin and still do. They both seem to preserve the colors equally well, both having 3X UV *protection* in them. The same seems true for both brands' UV resins - the colors have not faded on me at all. BUT...I use ONLY Let's Resin alcohol inks!

I’ve seen you use acrylic paints to add colour to resin projects. Do you think something like Tamiya acrylic paint clear colours would fade?

Have you ever had alcohol inks stain a mold, and if yes, is there any way to remove the stain so it doesn't impact future projects? I have a mold that is stained a dark colour and I did a resin pour with a white resin and the white resin picked up the red stain that was in the mold, somewhat ruining the piece.

Think maybe you could give them a try for us?
Thanks for getting us a discount code as well. So between the code & the sale they're currently only $13. I'm seriously thinking about getting them.

Every time I use alcohol inks my resin doesn’t set up. So frustrating! I will use clear and add inks like you just did and put some just plain to see if I had mixed it well enough. Everything sets up except for the alcohol ink ones. And I’ve only used 4 drops, hoping it would set up with less in them. Nope! Just doesn’t work for me. 😢
