- We're trying to dredge the Moat!
Chateau du Bailleul is surrounded by a water filled moat and it hasn't been looked after properly for over 60 years so it is nearing the end of its life without serious maintenance; with the digger we've borrowed we're seeing if we can change that

Do you know that money you get from the patron account if it only goes to restoration and upkeep of the chateaux and grounds can be tax free? Get an accountant if you haven't already. Stephanie found this out and realized she didn't have to lay 49% tax on patron no money.
That's a good point. Cause technically it's for the business n not personal. Great idea.
The moat is such a beautiful feature of your home. I am poor so I am unable to donate money but I hope that by liking and watching your videos and being a subscriber that I can get you some money through RUclips. I love your vlogs.
Thanks so much for watching!
And watching the ads. Also running one episode after another helps... 🌹
I was just sitting here wondering what your own living areas look like - your bedroom, kitchen bathroom and then I watched this and there you are in a really cool bedroom in an amazing bed. Would love to see more.
I do love that bedroom and bed!
We've shown you around different parts in previous videos if you want to go back and look through
When transferring plants, rose bushes in this case, you need to cut back most of the foliage to reduce the strain/shock to the plant and encourage root growth. Weeds will still grow from seed in the mulch put over barrier.
We aren't putting mulch we are putting down large seasoned wood chips so not quite the same for weed seeds
@@ChateauLife seeds will still root themselves over time in the top layer of the wood chips. I personally don’t like the weed barrier as in the long term it is not helpful for soil health under the barrier. Beat of luck!
Not sure if it’s available in France, but in the US we can hire a vacuum-truck service essentially a truck with a huge canister on back that suctions out the silt, filters and returns the water to the source… might be worth some research…
We have those here for emptying septic tanks, I’ll look into the one that you mention with filtering & returning just water. Good advice thank you!
@@ChateauLife be careful of the fishes ;-)
I have used this mat too. I live in Virginia, we have lots of weeds here. I learned it from the horticulturist where i used to work, Golf course maintenance.
Great to see you both having a bit of fun with the intro!
Glad you enjoyed it
Putting the, "weed barrier", down with the wood chips covering the bed will Not.prevent weeds. The seeds of weeds germinate under the chips because of the darkness and moisture. Their micro roots permeates the barrier, thus making it harder to pull them out. I had this exact problem. I put the barrier down on several meters, and the seeds came up with a vengance. Learned the hard way.
That's a good start on moat
Thanks so much!
You may want to wait on your plans with the wood chipper for a while. You still need Phil to complete the inside of the Chateau before you make any drastic measures lol. You are doing a great job and life will get easier as time goes on for sure. Have a wonderful day
All that silt will be great for improving your soil in your veg patch when all the creepy crawlies have vacated of course!
Very true!
Recently found your channel! Just love it! Love your sense of humor, your hard work & beautiful chateau! Love Lightening ❤️ too!!
I love you guys. Angelina, please don't hurt Philly.

Oh goodness! You two are quite the entertainers! Good luck with moat dredging. Keep the faith. Love your vlogs.
Thanks so much!
I love this!!!!! Hilarious intro!!!!! 😊🏰⭐️❤️
Thanks so much!
The problem with using the wood chips on top of the weed barrier is eventually those wood chips are going to turn into dirt and not help
Not very quickly at all if you use seasoned wood to make the large wood chips though
I laughed so much I nearly bought a round......not fixed you large mower yet its going to be In demand as summer gets going.
Absolutely enjoyed the vlog!!! Wood chippers are so handy 😉
Bache is also the word for the plastics and tarps someone puts on the floor or ground before painting to avoid getting drips or spills onto their flooring and ground...
....SHARK.... you've got a SHARK in the moat!!!
Genius and hilarious, wishing you the best. Moats seem to be such a lot of work, but so beautiful. ❤
Nothing worth doing was ever easy as they say!
Your bedroom is gorgeous. Love your imagination. Poor Phil 😊😊
Thank you! 😊
Although have to admit that isn't our bedroom its one of the spare rooms; we won't film in ours as we like to have a few things which are just for us!
OMG, love the sub-plot, you guys are fantastic! Go Angelina! :)
Glad you liked it!!
Goodness Philli DON’T use the chipper 😂😱🤣
It would be much easy Angelina to find 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover. You’d better hop on the bus Gus or make a new plan Stan 🤣🤣🤣 Y’all are so fun to watch. OXOXOX’s
Thanks so much!
Your channel gets better and better!!!
I see ivy on most wall that ivy will weaken your wall by growing through stones and if it had morter you will have to repoint. Ivy very damaging
Ivy is very destructive and we remove it anywhere it is when we sort an area out
@@ChateauLife you shouldn’t pull fresh ivy off a mortared wall. Cut it and let it die first and the roots will weaken and be safer for your mortar. Owned a 1940’s brick house covered with ivy on one side. It worked well.
And I thought you were such a loving couple. Lol very funny. The old song 50 ways to kill your lover springs to mind. Good luck with the moat. X
Both elements need doing but I do think the dredging is key to improving the water quality / visibility.
I have a large koi pond and aeration is crucial in the warmer months but not really required during the cooler more wetter months. Clearing leaves etc out is the only way to keep a more balanced PH level and better levels of visibility at this time of year.
If you wait a few months to get the funds for the aeration system the summer will be coming to an end so I would look to do the dredging after all the leaves have fallen this autumn and then install the aeration system in late Feb / early March ready for when the blanketweed etc starts to grow as the water temperature begins to rise.
The issue is the cost of the dredging may well mean it isn't done anytime soon so the aeration system is necessary in the meantime to save the wildlife
Your Foxgloves are beautiful. Love your vlogs. Kudos from the USA!
In the US lots of people use barley straw in bundles, floating in their ponds, to clean the water. It lets off enzymes that suppress the algae. Look it up - it's effective and cheap.
We've used that before and it did help a little with algae but not enough and it won't stop the silt build up and create more water movement which is also desperately needed here!
And i guess you've looked into davidpagenponds, from uk, he helps in maintaining natural ecological areas without using chemicals
We use it in our local nature reserve in the Uk
That was fun to watch ! Thanks
Hi Phil and Angelina.
Great to see a start on the dredging of the moat. I would consider that attempt a win as it gave you the opportunity to gauge the size of the task ahead.
One thing I am not aware that you have considered is what to do with the huge amount of soil which is going to come out of the moat. Do you have a low area that you can fill, with consideration for allowing the water to drain back into the moat. The amount of soil / mud will be great in volume.
One solution to this could be to ask a neighbouring farmer if he / they want it for their fields as this stuff will be very rich in organic matter and will fertilize their fields at little cost. Just transport.
Phil as an out of the Box suggestion have a look and see if you can purchase a second hand Sullage pump, these things are used by councils to suck up muddy areas which machines can not access. If you could find one you could suck up the mud, leaving most of the water in the moat and this system would allow you to dredge smaller areas at a time as you please. You obviously will need to be in the moat and moving the intake nozzle around by hand but it may be possible to drop it into an area and leave it there for a few hours at a time and let it do its` thing. This system would be far more affordable then hiring a 30 tonne excavator with an extended reach arm. The only down side to this system is the length of outlet pipe if you want to shift the mud a long way from the moat, but you may be able to hire the pipe from someone.
Anyway, Great effort with the 3 tonner, good luck with completing the task later.
Kind Regards.
David. Down Under.
The area of land where we we're digging from needs raising and it gets water logged and there is an access to it from the fields which needs building up so a large part of the soil that is removed will go to that; also a reasonable size pile to dry out for compost and to backfill behind the retaining walls of the banks which will be rebuilt at the same time.
Will definitely look at the pump you mention; thanks so much!
@@ChateauLife No one person has all the answers, so your subscribers will have knowledge and experiences which will help smooth your path forward.
Good Luck with all of the renovations.
David.
Watch White Cottage Company’s RUclips video on her pond renovation from The Pond Guy. I think it might help!
You guys are so funny. I’m so happy you are on the way to getting the moat in shape!
You will have to remove the wood chips every year and replace or else as it rots down weeds take over and just grow on top. I do mine once a year and put the old wood chips in the in the compost after as it's great for improving the soil.
We use seasoned wood to make the large wood chips so it isn't easy for weeds to grow due to the air gaps and being seasoned it doesn't rot down very quickly
You never remove wood mulch, it just eventually deteriorates, like other organic matter.
Love your videos! Keep up the hard work👍😎❤️
Thanks so much!!
I seriously hope nothing happens to your husband...... you will be the number one suspect! (careful what you wish for!) . You have a beautiful home, and amazing landscapes, truly blessed!
This was hilarious 😆 🤣 you guys are so funny!! 😀 love your videos 💕 wow you are getting so much done 😀😀 will the work on the moat also help reduce flooding too? 🤞that was a lot of slit from just the sides, hope someone with a large digger sees the video and loans you theirs! 🤞You could set up a go fund me page like Michael- that way people can donate any amount they want and you might save it up quicker? 🙂
Thank you so much; sleeping with one eye open!
With Patreon and buy me a coffee there are membership levels and we get to give something back for it which is why we prefer it; just our personal preference
be great if someone with a big digger does; fingers crossed!
I’m afraid that if you put in something like an aerator or whatever it’s only gonna get clogged and then you’re gonna regret not cleaning it out first. It’s not good to throw money into something that you haven’t properly cleaned out first, at least that’s what I think. Better to just save up for the right thing even if it takes longer. Hoping you can find the money, all the best.
The aeration system won't get clogged; I've seen it in use on lakes with a similar if not more silt than here without issues which is why we don't mind doing that first so the aquatic wildlife is happier while we wait to dredge properly
Can you provide an update on progress with the room you were renovating with new plasterboard. Have you finished it or is it still work in progress? Thanks
It will be interesting to check the mud with a metal detector.
I hope you get the funds. I just bought you a coffee.
Thanks so much and for your kind words!
Put some clams in there. They filter 50 gallons a water daily each
Already lots in there but it's the settled silt that need removing as well as filtering the water
Wonderful opening footage.Love the ducks!! You look like a princess lying there!! You guys crack me up!! Very creative ways to bump of Phil!! Phil with the digger reminds me of my brother with his Tonka trucks as a little boy. Angelina, have you thought making Phil shovel out the moat instead of bumping him off? That way he gets to live and you get the silt out of the moat!!! Love from Vermont
Phil, if you’re feeling unsafe, blink twice.😂
What does it mean if I just keep blinking; send help?
So fun! Love your channel!
The guidelines I always went with was landscape fabric when you’re putting rocks on top, no fabric when you’re using much. The mulch will eventually decompose and enrich the soil. You add new mulch on top as needed.
Landscape fabric (bash) is really not needed if you put new cover of hardwood mulch on each year or at least every 2 years
But when you fit the landscaping fabric it means you can easily remove the old wood chips when required and put fresh on rather than just adding more and building up the banks higher and higher every few years
@@ChateauLife actually the soil build up is very minimal and takes many years to be a quarter inch and it does create the best soil for the plant roots. The fabric is a personal preference but it doesn’t stop the weed/grass seed that land on top. Once you lay the initial mulch you only need to lightly top dress it with new. Anyway, looks great and enjoy the progress
@@crossroadschronicles4647 Lots of opinions on this issue, but from my many years of experience, I agree with Mark.
It's going to happen!!!!!!! Soooo excited!!!!
From classical bliss to horror, in less than a minute 🤣🤣🤣 you should check for old coins and crowns in that moat dirt.. You never know..
ooh my goodness what a cliff hanger poor philly hes going to be a gonna for sure i feel it in my "water" as my gran used to say and my waters never wrong!!!! The aeration will help and yes i also heard of straw being used to clear the water but you can get some chemical stuff that will help as well and it doesnt hurt the fish or wildlife . Re fund raisers . why not invite steffanie jarvis and philippe if you got a piano and outside have a conert with steffanies beautiful operatic singing and philipes piano playing may be you know some other musicians and you could have an outdoor event and get folk to brink a picnic bring there folding chairs or a blanket and have a picnic concert. you may need to hire a portable loo or 2 . You could have a hog roast /barbeque and sell food and sell glasses of wine . just a thought .well i need to wait till next time and see if philly survies the wood chipper!!!!
We do events for the public here through the summer months normally and the funds raised from that go back into the Chateau; still waiting to see if that is possible this year with the ever changing rules!
We miss you Phil and Angelina, we hope that you’re ok.
Wow best video ever ste you going to keep trying to bump of phil
We shall see!
Boy Phil’s really in trouble. Wouldn’t want to be him about now.
He will survive I'm sure!
What would be cool is a floating raft to walk the digger onto to dredge the middle. In theory might work. Enjoyed the moat segment and still wonder are those fish edible or ? Until next time! Later! Barter for he price of dredging another suggest then no money required. Perhaps wood chipping for ? etc.!
Cool idea but I'm not sure an insurance company would cover it!
Probably better to clean it out first otherwise could mess up the filtration gear
Love ❤️ your opening hilarious 😆
If you clear the whole moat one year then you're likely to clear out most of the things you like. The dragonflies live in water for two years as a larva. The bloodworms that fish love, need that mix of water and areas of anaerobic decay. You have got a very complex aquatic environment.
If you want to clear the water you may need to prune the trees back as they produce a lot of leaves that end up in the water. They also reduce a lot of light which will help oxygenating plants. They would help restore the water quality.
You may be advised to seek advice from local concanavalin groups to see if they could offer guidance for a contribution.
But if you dredge it like you plan then you are only removing the bulk of the biomass but not addressing the underlying conditions.
Another way to remove sludgy mass is to find a local farmer which has a water pump and extension tube which runs off the hydraulics of the tractor. It allows you to pump the debris some distance away also.
It wouldn't be the entire moat in one year due to time, cost and of course how that changes the ecosystem we have here.
All the trees need cutting back severely and many need removing; we do that as we can with out time and equipment (Very large cherry picker and commercial wood chipper etc) but ultimately undoing what is at least 60 years of things being left to their own devices isn't easy.
The carp are bottom feeders and will always stir up mud. In Japan they grow the koi carp on in muddy ponds like this and only when selling them on do they move them to clear water so they can be admired. The carp are less stressed in muddy waters.
If you have problems with gnats you could look at fish like golden orfe (if Allowed under French law) or fish like Rudd. They will eat insects in the upper water to surface levels and add movement. The Rudd is silver but there are golden variants too.
With oxygen lines be aware that fish don't like crossing lines of bubbles. In some areas they are used like fishing nets to allow fish to be concentrated and then collected.
Love the Evil Chateau Princess!

Wouldn’t it be harder for them to dredge with aeration system in place just wondering! Love your channel! 🇨🇦
Not at all, the pump itself is houses on the bank and the pipework is easily lifted when needed; we did check as thought the same thing as you and didn't want to make it more difficult!

Have you ever seen the movie "Fargo"? The wood chipper is a great idea.
After you the silt dries out, will it be good for compost, since it's all decayed organic matter?
It certainly will be!
If you put the sunken pipes, would you have to remove it all when you do dredge? Otherwise they may damage it?
Yes but that quite easy to do and a section at a time just like the actual dredging
