  • If you’re a fan of eighties action movies, you know The Cannon Group. Run by Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, in the eighties, they cranked out a slew of low-budget action movies, most of which were hated by critics. Yet, every once in a while, they made a legitimately great movie that would even make the critics sit up and take notice, such as 1986’s Runaway Train. Directed by Andrei Konchalovsky (Tango & Cash) and based on a script by Akira Kurosawa, the movie stars Jon Voight and Eric Roberts as two cons who escape prison in Alaska by hopping a train that just so happens to be out of control, spiralling through Alaska after its engineer dies. The film offers Jon Voight one of the greatest roles of his career as the hardcore convict Manny, with Eric Roberts as his younger accomplice, Buck. Both actors would earn Academy Award nominations and were joined by Rebecca De Mornay as the lone other passenger on this out-of-control train.
The movie wasn’t a big financial hit, but it earned Cannon some respectability, with Hollywood forced to reconsider the stereotypical view of them as schlock merchants. Indeed, after this movie, many Hollywood stars would sign rich deals with them, only for the studio to crumble under the weight of its new ambitions within 18 months. In the end, they were probably better off with low-budget action, but whatever the case, Runaway Train stands up as a classic, as Reel Action host Travis Hopson explains in his review!

John Voight, Eric Roberts and Rebbeca DeMoray are polarizing. And Rankin (John P. Ryan), what an awesome character. 455h0le to the very end. No heros. Just mesmerizing acting. This film is foot stomping to the end.

Runaway Train" is one of THE GREATEST movies of 1985 and beyond. The acting, the action, the story were all phenomenal. Some of John Voight's best work. Eric Roberts was nominated for an academy award and Rebecca DeMorne was fantastic in her 1st action role amongst some heavyweights. Unforgettable movie. I watched it yet again last night.

That whole Oscar night was weird. I saw the telecast when I was 16. Cher was overlooked for Mask, the Color Purple walked away empty handed despite having 11 nominations and a break dancing senior citizen won Best Supporting Actor.

There are some interesting conspiracy theories as to why Jon Voight didn’t win a Best Actor Oscar. Among them: the academy didn’t want to award an actor in a Cannon Group movie. The academy felt The Cannon Group was a low rent, sleazy studio. They didn’t want to give them any kind of legitimate prestige.
Other conspiracy theories include not wanting to give another Best Actor Oscar to Voight after winning previously for Coming Home; the fact that Voight played a villain (although, that is debatable if he is a true villain); the academy wasn’t crazy about the movie itself, thinking it was basically mindless action movie.
While I like William Hurt’s performance in “Kiss of the Spider Woman”, Hurt’s performance and the movie itself are largely forgotten today. On the other hand, Runaway Train is now considered a classic among action movie fans and fans of “tough guy” movies.

Awesome. Great to see Reel Action giving this film some love ( 8 Stallones out of 10 - couldn't agree more). I first saw this with my parents on a movie night when it first came out on vhs. It blew my mind when I was a kid. I saw it again when I was in my twenties and I couldn't believe that Kurosawa had written the original treatment, and how much depth this film had for being a Golan Globus actioner. One film directed by Andrei Konchalovsky that I did enjoy later in the 90's that I managed to see was The Inner Circle (91') starring Tom Hulce and Lolita Davidovich. An excellent drama about soviet era life in the Kremlin.

By the time the characters realize they're on a runaway train, it's too late. The train is going at 80 mph, you can't make that jump and expect to survive. There's actually a lot of dialogue discussing that.

I love this movie. I just happen upon it one day on one of the movie channels and later in the video stores. You forget that this is an action movie as the acting and story just transcends its genre. It was the combination of story, screenplay, director, actors, and crew that puts this movie beyond its brethren. This is just a phenomenal film.
    Spoilers ahead.....
Manny and Buck know they are not good people though Manny can see that Buck is at a tipping point, Buck could be a good person if he just gets away from Manny. Rebecca De Mornay was really the only "good" person in the film but she knew she may have to do bad things if needed. There is a tinge of self sacrifice from Manny (he knew that Ranken would pursue Buck and thus sealing Buck into a life of crime and prison) when he took the lead engine into the crash taking Rankin with him. There as a bit of revenge in that act as well.

It is a tough guy action film but what makes it so different is that it's doesn't become a cliche like other movies. So many movies have tried to make a cool movie about a train but have failed to make it interesting. Also what's cool is this was not a shootum up movie with lots of guns. It's all about two guys and a girl on a high speeding train.

I have seen the movie several times over the years, and its great! A real classic fer sure. It seems like Joblo does a few injustices in regards to his assessments of the characters motivations and their thinking, but that can be forgiven as hes looking at things from not only a very modern point of view, but the point of view where, like many youtube reviewers, Joblo tries to play it safe and say " well hes a bad guy, and does this or that cause hes a bad guy" (paraphrasing). ITs forgivable, no worries. I get it, you try to keep things simple sometimes, but the dudes in this film are still not so black & white. And if you were in prison for years, and saw a cute lady, you would be fantasizing of making love to her as well lol. They are not supposed to be suave or tactful, they are escaped prisoners, whom know they might not make it, and though they could be polite, but might die soon, they thus dont worry about politeness if it fast tracks them a ticket toward finally getting laid for the first time in forever. Or if by being brusk to say the least, manage to fulyl escape AND survive successfully. :P Anyways, still like ya and your channel and Love that you talked about Runaway Train. Its one of the top three best train films along with The Great Train Robbery starring Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland, as well as The Train(1964) starring Burt Lancaster. PE@CE ^~^
