Hey man I know this video is 5 years old now but I've watched it through many times and I'm happy to say that I got into Berklee this year! Thank you for making this, I think it really helped!
Dude, it helped! Seriously. Good instruction. I'm not up for a Berkeley Audition (wish I could play like that) but just having you "voice" the parts beforehand was definitely helpful. Keep sending us the online tutorials! Always appreciated. Hope you have a great career, man!
you don’t go to berklee to learn how to play, you go there to learn how to be a musician if that makes sense. i know those may sound the same, but being a professional musician is much more than simply playing well. you have to be able to work with others, you have to be able to articulate a creative vision, and most importantly you have to know people that are in the music game. berklee offers all of those things, plus top notch instructors and guest speakers. you’re basically guaranteed a place in the music industry when you leave there.
"just start with the time and then add things in as they feel right" that is almost the exact quote my band director gave me the first time i played jazz. As simple as it sounds i really think that is the best approach to playing jazz drums. great vid JP keep it up!
Not even a drummer but I watched this entire little series. Great mastery of music and its language, you communicated everything perfectly with great demonstration. Loved that up tempo jazz stuff. Great double time swing.
Thank you so much man! Great video!! My audition is this Saturday! I'm wicked nervous, because i suck at reading... Wish me luck. Maybe i'll see you sometimes!
I got accepted to Berklee and this video helped a lot. I practiced each style you talked about and prepared them well then the guy told me to play a 12/8 Afro Cuban and I thought "Damn, that wasn't in JP's video." Lol. But thanks for the video. Can't wait to get there and learn even more.
I've been playing drums for about 32 years and I found your video EXTREMELY helpful, JP!! I never took lessons and so would consider myself more of a hack than anything else and I do stuff that I couldn't explain or classify because of my lack of formal training. Be that as it may, as I watched your video, I discovered some of what I do and how it could be classified. For that, I am thankful!! Best wishes to you and thanks for taking the time to put this together!!
Man, out of the 1,894,093 drumming videos I've seen on YT this would probably get the most points in terms of helpfulness and content. Thank you so much!
the samba pattern on your right hand is really a "Faux Samba". what my percussion teacher calls the "fake samba". it's an adaptation, which is now accepted as Samba. i like how you incorperated it on the kit. Love the lessons! keep up the good stuff!
This is EXACTLY what I've been needing. I had a list of pretty much everything you covered, but seeing it all in action really helped too. Thanks for making this!
Kudos for doing this. Excellent educational points. Keep doing what you're doing. Gonna save this as a reference for my students prepping for college auditions.
thanks for posting....I am not even a drummer and found your teachings very interesting. My friend you are a very good educator. I have learnt a lot from you about drumming and music in general. You are good at what you do....thanks again
Thanks, man! I live in Brazil and I'm thinking about applying for Berklee! You helped a lot! You nailed the bossa and the samba rhythms! Cheers and thanx!
I love this video, it really helped me with my audition to Tech Music School in London. I finally got in after 3 attempts, and I have no doubt that seeing this video earlier would have helped me get in sooner, so thank you buddy, keep making awesome videos like this!
i didn't really know you as a player but with this video you show immediately insane good skills. And that without actually showing off! You are going to make it very far my friend! Go for the stars!!
Loved hearing your Latin tips. It’s my weakest genre; I learned the basic boss nova and samba rhythm 20 years ago, and still find it hard to improvise over top of the basic back beat. I just can’t seem to internally feel the time which just frustrates me to no end. I’ve always chalked it up as being something unteachable. Basically, you either get it or you don’t. But after listening to your take on it and demonstration I just might get past what I learned in like 7th grade. You play tastefully and I like that you hold back and resist over killing it. And I loved the 2 beat trips. You must like them because I heard you play them a few times. I think most drummers love a well place two beat trip. Well done.
Man this video is the deal! I havnt played in yrs. just picked back up, and its good to see not much has changed. Same styles. Dynamics is still the key. Awesome! peace man.
I really appreciate these videos! I'm 16 going into my junior year and I want to pursue a career in music and now I know what I need to work on thanks to you, I have a lot of things to work on but I think with the knowledge this video gave me I'll be ready to apply to any music school in 2 years, thanks once again!
a little drummer to drummer advice: get well rounded. do all the other percussion stuff if your school teaches it. mallets, timpani, snare, anything you can get your hands on. my hand technique, phrasing, interpretation, and overall feel improved drastically after learning those 3 listed above. especially rudimental snare and 4 mallets. good luck my friend, and dont fixate on one school. i enrolled at what was my 3rd choice school, and it has worked out better than my first 2 choices would have
JP: wow, i'm really impressed. So straightforward, such straightalk, I love it. I've been playing 8.5 yrs and this really inspired me to practice a lot of what you are playing. I've never taken lessons ( I should have) so this is inspiring. If you ever come out to San Francisco bay area I'll pay you for a lesson. !!
very nice i really enjoyed watching the vid your a real pro it shows that you weren't just there to show off your chops but to really prepare yourself .once again very nice !
I know this is old but....I'm just in love with drumming, I am older and taught myself how to play by ear and never ventured into learning how to read music sadly (really bummed that I didn't) but I have been watching your drumming skills as of late and stumbled across this video and I think it's awesome that you did this this to prepare people and share your knowledge, you are an amazing drummer and this was a fun video to watch but also a sad one because I realize how badly I suck, but ya know what I don't care and I'm gonna go jam out to some Tool right now, peace out!
Really cool advice at the end with "Only so many accents can be placed in a 4 bar measure." I was just thinking that exact thing yesterday and how I am going to start practicing each hit starting with quarter notes and then to 8th, 16th, and 32nd. Watched the whole thing. Great video. Thanks.
I keep trying to tell people(specifically drummers) less is more and most just don't seem to get it. You sir on the other hand are fucking amazing but know what its all about. I applaude you!
Hey man I'm auditioning for Berklee tomorrow! Just wanted to let you know this video rocks! I'm going over everything for the audtition one last time so I came back to this video to review. This video has been so helpful man!
I'm a Junior in high school and my teacher went to Berklee and I play both drum kit and bass guitar and this video was very helpful and gave me alot of confidence going into my next year I need alot of work but it makes me want to work hard at it and its inspiring so thank you very much :)
I think the key is portraying the emotion and energy whilst retaining control. If you're playing in a small venue, an overly loud drummer is really distracting and obtrusive, a good drummer can play a really strong and driving groove at any dynamic range. I still see where you're coming from, but the truth is it takes a lot more skill to play that way.
my is alfredo tafoya and i like to tellyou that you are a verygood drum player cause you explain and teach how to make it hapend this is first time that i see you and i think youre greate, keep doing what you love and god going to bless you with more years of life, Im from Hayward california and I play drums at church my church is Victory Outreach and I hope one day I can play like you, thankyou for shering youre talent.
very helpful.........i am a worship drummer.......and we never really think @ how many styles that we cover in a typical church service........its nice to put a "label" on them..."very informitive".....thank-you
You're good with some ego, but it's cool because your speaking style is very inclusive and you are very encouraging, and all this comes out in your playing as well... Go far young man..... good luck......
Dude, Wow! thanks this was HUGE HELP TO ME! i'm 17, trying to get into Berkeley. mostly a metal drumming, and wanted to expand my drumming vocab! Thanks Again!
i dont plan on going to college there, or even auditioning, but I watched this bc I liked hearing your take on all the different styles. I definitely learned some good stuff, so thanks!
For a basic bossa nova groove, the ride pattern is commonly in 16th notes, played very lightly. You could also play it on the hi-hat! :) Cheers, good video
Very informative and helpful video! Wish I had this video 2 years ago when I auditioned! Did get accepted, but unfortunately Berklee is quite expensive. Your playing style is amazing, I'm definitely a fan now!
I guess the thing I'm more comfortable is the samba, and the bossa nova, because I just been jamming for several years, with a friend, that is also a drummer from Brasil. We generally play those genres, and although they're not as crazy to play as really fast metal beats, they're amazing to relax, and let yourself feel the music and express that feeling through the drums
Thanks alot man for the advice and taking out the time to share this video on what the auditions might be like. Great video, nice pocket and groove! Hopefully u will see me soon. Im auditioning maybe sometime next year and kind of nervous and didnt know what to expect and this gave me a heads up! So, again thanks for the advice!!
I feel that it should be noted that the jazz ride pattern focuses on emphasizing each quarter note of the bar, and doesn't accent 2 and 4. The hi hat takes care of that. The ride lays down the quarter with teh bass drum, and swings.
Try playing a few different ostinatos with your feet (like the bossa or samba that are in the video) and practice different rudiments with your hands and see how they fit together. I find it best to hear how things fit together and almost make it like you're not playing things independently but as a whole, which is good listening training. The best advice though is to not give up! Persistence is king!
You helped me so much in my preparation for my MYJB audition! Thank you! I remember seeing you in the paper last year. The town paper; I'm from Apple Valley.. Minnesota rep!
This is kind of you man, I'm not auditioning but subscribed because this is a very great thing of you to do! (Not to mention you're a killer on a kit!)
Yes start feeling GOOD .....tis helpful ....btw i use to play at famous stars en straps with Travis next door giving free drum lessons to kids,,so your on the right track but im sure you knew that. Blessings
I'm 15 years old, started playing drums sum time ago, but really just started to dedicate myself to it in the end of 2011... Since then, I've improved A LOT, and then I saw that drumming's exactly what I want to do with my life. Going to Berklee is my dream and these 2 videos are helping me a lot to practice what I really need to get in... Anyway, hope I make it! :)
It's probably better than slowing down. Honestly, I would just chop it out until you can keep up for a minute or so. Then again, I started as a metal drummer, so speed and endurance were the least of my worries by the time I got into up-tempo jazz.
All the drummers I know who are actually professional and who are excellent musicians are humble. There is no other way to get to be a pro, because you aren't going to get there without a lot of other musicians helping you and if you think you are awesome, you won't be prepared to accept that help in the way you need to in order to progress as a musician.
This video was SOOOOOOOOOOO helpful. You're such an awesome dude. Really funny too! XD Got a lot of useful tips and ideas. :) Finally got out of that feeling where I don't where to go next. I'm really a guitarist, but I decided to drums also cuz' it was just SOOO much fun when I first tried and I just fell in love with playing. Been drumming for almost two years now and still excited for the years to come! Thanks a lot JP! :D
Hey man I know this video is 5 years old now but I've watched it through many times and I'm happy to say that I got into Berklee this year! Thank you for making this, I think it really helped!
I just got accepted to Berklee today and I’m so stoked! Thank you so much! This video was so great in preparing me for my audition!
how's it going?
did you graduate?
I just met JP today and told him that I had learned a lot from this video when I had watched it years back. He’s still an incredible teacher!
Dude, it helped! Seriously. Good instruction. I'm not up for a Berkeley Audition (wish I could play like that) but just having you "voice" the parts beforehand was definitely helpful. Keep sending us the online tutorials! Always appreciated. Hope you have a great career, man!
I didn't relize how good you had to be to go to berklee. If your that good already you should already have a job
Few artists have
Danny Carey had a job..
Questions?
you don’t go to berklee to learn how to play, you go there to learn how to be a musician if that makes sense. i know those may sound the same, but being a professional musician is much more than simply playing well. you have to be able to work with others, you have to be able to articulate a creative vision, and most importantly you have to know people that are in the music game. berklee offers all of those things, plus top notch instructors and guest speakers. you’re basically guaranteed a place in the music industry when you leave there.

I dont even drum and I watched this whole damn thing
This guy is truly a sound dude, really down to earth. Great video
Thank you so much man! Great video!! My audition is this Saturday! I'm wicked nervous, because i suck at reading... Wish me luck. Maybe i'll see you sometimes!
You are one kewl and humble drummer i've seen.
And your willingness to share is something i adore... \m/
I got accepted to Berklee and this video helped a lot. I practiced each style you talked about and prepared them well then the guy told me to play a 12/8 Afro Cuban and I thought "Damn, that wasn't in JP's video." Lol. But thanks for the video. Can't wait to get there and learn even more.
how do you feel today?
how do you feel today? ( 2 )
I'm really curious as to what your experience has been like 4 years in
How do you feel today?
Today do you feel how?
"Don't play a lot of crap with your left hand" Ha ha!
Part 3: How to pay for Berklee without selling your soul.
I've been playing drums for about 32 years and I found your video EXTREMELY helpful, JP!! I never took lessons and so would consider myself more of a hack than anything else and I do stuff that I couldn't explain or classify because of my lack of formal training. Best wishes to you and thanks for taking the time to put this together!!
that was a killer samba.
Thanks for the heads up. I think I'm good enough to get in the first go around. I love a challenge. JP, is the best on knowledge!!
man you play'n fantastic !
love the feel and style
and thank you for the time you took to put this vid's together
not only is he fucking amazing at drums but hes one of the nicest and most inspiring person ive ever got the chance to talk to

Most excellent! JP You're the man!
My brother is in Berklee, I'm EXTREMELY proud of him....GO ELDER PEREZ!
Thanks Man! still worth watching 2 years later!
You are good at what you do....thanks again
im actually glad i watched this i wasnt too fond of his playing before, but this def opened my eyes up to him. much respect Mr. Bouvet.
Thanks, man! I live in Brazil and I'm thinking about applying for Berklee! You helped a lot! You nailed the bossa and the samba rhythms! Cheers and thanx!
I love what you say about jazz. Auditioning next year for Berklee, mostly a jazz/funk drummer. You're the man!
Unbelievable how much talent this person possesses and how great those beautiful Byzance Cymbals and his kit sound!
Thanks jp, my audition is in 3 days and this has built my confidence tenfold
Loved hearing your Latin tips. It’s my weakest genre; I learned the basic boss nova and samba rhythm 20 years ago, and still find it hard to improvise over top of the basic back beat. This was awesome! Not geting in to Berklee any time soon but you gave me loads of ideas how to play!
That snare worked very well for the samba. Tuned appropriately and brought out the accents and flams beautifully.
Man this video is the deal! I havnt played in yrs. just picked back up, and its good to see not much has changed. Same styles. Dynamics is still the key. Awesome! peace man.
JP you're an amazing drummer with awesome feel and diversity
Perfect !!! Not just helpful but also amusing !!! Keep it up JP.
This is amazing maaan, really helpful🙏🏻 I hope to meet you someday when I get to Berklee. Take care JP and thanks again
the fill starting around 8:54 is DOPE

Very informative and helpful video! Wish I had this video 2 years ago when I auditioned! Did get accepted, but unfortunately Berklee is quite expensive. Your playing style is amazing, I'm definitely a fan now!
I'm not sure when application times are. Check Berklee's website. I know it's on there. I think you can apply anytime.
What a dynamic samba playing man. Really really good job!

Amazing. What a pro! I would kill for some lessons with JP.
He actually has a website up that is amazing. Very insightful stuff!! www.jpbouvetmusic.com
This is so motivating jp congradulations on all your success

Awesome JP! I just saw this for the first time brother! Love that shirt! You are the man! NICE! Thank you very much senor!
im not a meinl guy but those meinls sound awesome
Any expensive top shelf of a brand sounds great.
Try playing a few different ostinatos with your feet (like the bossa or samba that are in the video) and practice different rudiments with your hands and see how they fit together. ALL MY RESPECT FOR @JPBOUVET. I´M A FOLLOWER FROM SPAIN. THX FOR YOUR VIDEO
Have fun and be confident. Great advise.
Killer playing, love your snare drum sound and I need to get one of those t shirts.
Dude this helped!!! I'm not going to Berklee, but I do have to audtion for another school.
This is a great video. I don't really plan on going to school for music but I want to learn to play more dynamically and this video helps alot.
Thank you so much for this! This is really gonna help me!
After playing drums for 20 yrs, growing up in a jazz family, i finally know the difference btwn bossa and samba lmao. Makes so much sense now 😁
Well made me realize how much I suck! Your great good job
Great scott, the Byzance ride sounds glorious!
Love the shirt! and the drumming. Young shred master.
It's a pity than you've stopped putting videos on your great channel. Anyways, thank for everything i've already posted!
Yes JP years later and it a good video just scribed.
Nice ending to the video JP. I can see Tito with his mouth open. This is truly a great video. Like the room.
This is gold. I learnt a lot, thanks for posting this!
That samba was literally incredible man.
Yeah! It was super helpful, thanks!
i have no ambition to ever apply for a music school. I have watched this litteraly dozens of times just because I dig the playing
Yes start feeling GOOD .....tis helpful ....btw i use to play at famous stars en straps with Travis next door giving free drum lessons to kids,,so your on the right track but im sure you knew that. Blessings

did you make it?
@@duncanmacgregor9565 we may never know :(
He is definately one of my favorite drummers
It's probably better than slowing down. Honestly, I would just chop it out until you can keep up for a minute or so. Then again, I started as a metal drummer, so speed and endurance were the least of my worries by the time I got into up-tempo jazz.
All the drummers I know who are actually professional and who are excellent musicians are humble.
