That's so cool that they are honest about the "shortcomings" of their particular weapon/method, deconstruct their own reactions/offense/defense, adapt, and run the scenario again. Just too cool.
I respect the scientific approach to this problem. This is the first reasonable response to a knife attack that I have seen on YT. Just a note. When you roll onto your back don't forget that your feet can be used as a weapon. A push kick with one or both feet is incredibly effective.
What a deadly combo, Doug and Zero. It would be cool to have them do a cameo on The Walking Dead as a pair of bad ass wanderers taking out the zombies and bad humans.
Incredible. Both are learning from each other while still getting the upper hand to the other guy. This is the justice that needs to be spoken. Both applications can be made to respect one another. Love this. Zero and Marcaida are Kickass. MORE!
Extremely thought provoking. This is an excellent example for continuing education and training for ccw and personal defense. Lots of mediocre videos out there from so called experts, this is simply heads and shoulders above the rest.
Definitely something that can be applied to real life! These moves and tactics aren't too far off from being used by practically anybody with disciplined practice. Thank you! Great video. Keep em coming.
I think the most important point about these videos is that at that distance (21 feet and under), you're going to be cut. This is a matter of minimizing the damage you take while engaging the threat. Like many have stated, if Doug really wanted to stab Zero, he would at that distance without a problem. No one is saying that Doug wouldn't die but Zero would've taken a lethal blow. Great stuff gents....
I completely agree. People also seem to overlook the fact that getting shot doesn't mean you're instantly dead or even down. In a lot of these scenarios, both may have ended up injured instead of there being a clear winner.
da1krayziethug Good point. Although, this is a life or death situation and the clear winner is the one that survives. I believe in this situation with 2 skilled fighters, the chances of either surviving is quite low. Lets be serious, someone with a knife isn't going to be advancing towards you like a zombie with a limp wrist then jog right past you.
You know bro that is true because that same thing happen in my hometown in DR where a fight broke down between two guys and one stab the other and the other had a gun and kill the one that stab him and later after he was rushed to the hospital, he died before getting there.
This is a great idea because rather than compete against each other, they`re sharing insights and helping each other test theories against tactics that you don`t normally see. There`s a saying "You don`t know what you don`t know" meaning you don`t know your own blindspots, because a blindspot ISN``T just a place you can`t see. It`s also a place that you aren`t aware that you can`t see. And that`s what gets people hurt.
also the fact that the assailant with a knife wouldn't Loudly approach, the man with a knife or in my personal case a sword could still be just as deadly as the man wielding a gun for the simple fact of silence, a man with a gun could be Dropped before they even get the inkling of the thought that their life is in danger
Dave Hardan it's in my case meaning my personal preference of a weapon is a sword, Not that I killed someone, in my opinion a sword is much more elegant and requires much more in order to use it
Drop, roll fire. It works! In my case, very small hide out gun, against hatchet. The tactic works folks! I'm a retired maker of Fighting Knives, and I can telly you. Ill take the hide out hand gun every time! KnifeMaker
this was something i had never thought of. the point of view from a person wielding a gun concealed and facing an attacker (or multiple attackers) with a knife. 96% of the time one with the gun is sure to have shot the attacker (not based on any statistic data), however, there still remains a chance of being stabbed by the knife. this was an eye-opening video.
guru kalidoug is absolutely 150% amazing power and beauty in deadly motion. IMHO he is the most exciting martial artist to come around in the last 50 years or longer.deepest respect.
Wow, they are good! Sorry, not good but GREAT ! I learn how to protect myself when someone who charge you with a knife. My back is going to have black and blue for a while I am trying to perfection this move. What a great honor to see both of them share knowledges so we can better for ourselves. Thank you for sharing!
Great series. On a single knife? Bought one for over $2000. I'm pretty sure Marcaida would like that one. Lol, big knife user/lover, have thousands in my tools... Lucky I'm the maker too so make and sell some pretty pricey blades myself
In knife vs knife the are only three possible outcomes. 1.. You kill the oppisition but wind up in the hospital. 2.. The oppisition kills you and ends up in the hospital. 3.. You both die. These are based on the principal that both people know how to effectively use an edged weapon. You basically have a 33% chance of success. That's also why I EDC a G19. Keep the videos coming.
when someone can put their ego in the trunk of the car and then go and train with an open mind and with a clear head and with honesty. that person is generally called "A PROFESSIONAL" like these two gentlemen.
there is another video of these guys (a few of them actually) discussing what they do as instructors. You can tell they truly know their craft but they seem to be very humble and down to earth.
The think both of these men are quality. Zero: In hind sight do you feel you needed to apply angles to defensive draw? Clearing your right leg/foot after roll...lay it flat...for clearer line of fire?
Going down on your back like that to avoid the knife attack is a very good tactic. The knife attacker doesn't expect it. In battle, any battle, one on one or army against army, tactics are all about doing the unexpected to throw your enemy off and hopefully go on the defensive.
He who initiates the attack has the tactical advantage. Because he controls the space between two bodies. Knife advantage grows when distance is minimized. Gun advantage grows as space is maximized. Projectile vs edged weapon. A blade is my primary for self D, most violent situations occur within 5 feet and a fixed blade cannot be mechanically disabled.
I carry a firearm on me everyday, and I love firearms training. But that being said, in true close quarter combat? I'm Team Knife, all the way. On that note, I'm curious to know what Mr.Marcaida's opinion is on the price of blades. The average person doesn't carry a utility knife AND a defense/tactical knife. Is it worth having both, and are any of them truly worth $250+?
Oh yeah, after taking 3 anatomy courses in college you learn just where to put a blade to sever arteries, veins, tendons..... could come in handy one day
First aid class,3 anatomy courses.Yeah so does a couple google searches. I'm not giving you guys shit just saying. You guys were just doing stuff for your careers/future and pick this stuff up on the way witch is pretty legit. On that note no one ever says anything about attacking the nervous system with a blade just thought I'd point that out. What do you guys think?
Had a friend in the Rangers tell me when they went through hand to hand combat training with knives they said one of the most silent ways to kill someone if you get behind them is to stab them right under the ear in a slight upward strike. Because that is where the jaw hinges to the skull and its very easy to get to the brain from that spot with practically no resistance due to the bone structures behind the jaw being very thin.
That is one of the suggestions I had; thus the gunman gives himself more time to identify the threat. Also the gunman isn't in a relatively static position.
The mistake that many people will make is to imagine that this has anything to do with non-elite fighters [ that is you and me ]. One or two shots is no guarantee of stopping an attack. Killing with a knife for a very determined robust guy does not need elite skill whereas quick drawing and fast very accurate CNS killshots under stress do require elite training. I guarantee that for real using these scenarios a gangbanger knifer would kill the prepper gunman 80%+ if the time unless the gunman has the good sense to run away. If you can't escape then falling to the ground and shooting or kicking if you are unarmed is a viable defence. Most martial art "knife defence" is not.
Really good points, the only negative I could see is that as your rolling or falling back your have to land your shots on a target that is trying to cut your head off. After saying that it does open up new possibilities for the shooter over the knife fighter
Interesting. Personally, I think knives should be used with the element of surprise, and you should be used when one least expects it when it comes to CQB. The greatest advantage of a gun is killing/maiming at a distance. The greatest disadvantage for a knife is distance, and its greatest advantage is having it close to whoever you are attacking. I think the only time it is wise to use a knife "openly" is if the other person has a knife or some kind of dangerous cutting/blunt force weapon (baseball bat, crowbar, hammer, box cutter, etc and so forth), or against several unarmed opponents trying to hurt you. If you try using a knife against a gun, and if you mess up just a little bit, and the guy with the gun can create distance to fire off some rounds, you're dead. I won't go into particulars, but I do believe there are ways you can use a knife to beat a gun, but you have to be in very close proximity, and with the guy with the gun not knowing what you are going to do.
I've gotta say, as a self-defense instructor, while these moves are impressive & would work, not everyone can do a combat roll & come up shooting. Some people carrying a gun for a living have injuries preventing such maneuvers. Don't get me wrong though, I'm a big fan of this collaboration.
i understand what you are saying and im sure someone with back issues isnt going to be practicing this very much if at all but wouldnt doing a roll or even better just falling backwards be better then getting a knife stuck in your chest??
Good point. You should also point out the importance of falling safely (keeping your head from hitting the ground; knowing how to disperse the force of the fall). It's always better to practice different variations for different variables such as being in a crowd of people and attacked. Also, as discussed in this video, anyone with a little bit of knowledge in knife fighting would rather pull a sneak attack on a man with a gun than go charging at him.
The roll and the drop work to get out of the hit distance of a knife, no question. 1) it's kind of counterintuitive 2) landing on a mat is one thing, landing on uneven pavement, logs or rocks is another. If nothing else, this video proves the importance of practice and maybe a spartan kick bring the first course of action. NB, kudos for having it being an attack from behind.
I agree that the drop and roll is not something that can be done instinctively, trying kick a guy wielding a knife is a bad idea. If they're quick enough, they can lacerate your femoral artery, you'd be lucky to get any medical assistance in time before you pass out.
HwaRang777 19 second bleed out from the femoral artery. And I would say that rolling and getting a couple of scrapes and bruises on a hard or uneven surface would always trump a severe knife wound. In a life or death situation I'd hit the ground like a bag of potatoes if it meant life.
Yeah, trying to kick a karambit wielding Doug Marcaida is inadvisable and he'd fillet your femoral. For a meth head with a broken beer bottle, the opponent is unlikely to have the presence of mind to deliberately inflict a mortal injury.
I think these would be so much better and more professional if the cameraman didnt comment or ask questions. I mean, if you are going to put someone asking questions, make it someone inside the fight context. inside the film. But still, I think these videos are awesome, and I love this channel Keep it up guys!
Makes sense. Falling back onto the ground does buy time, increases distance, then allows the legs to defend from the knife. Might be practically applied, after practiced hundreds of times.

Pick a side and rep your team!

i love how they're both so professional and not trying to prove which side is better.
amazing!
interesting

just be sure not to shoot your feet if you kick.
Very cool video!
He notes that his legs created resistance as well as distance. Very briefly though.
noesomhelst Lol😂😂😂
What a deadly combo, Doug and Zero. It would be cool to have them do a cameo on The Walking Dead as a pair of bad ass wanderers taking out the zombies and bad humans.
Incredible. Both are learning from each other while still getting the upper hand to the other guy. This is the justice that needs to be spoken. Both applications can be made to respect one another. Love this. Zero and Marcaida are Kickass. MORE!
I would give anything to spend a week training under these two
Extremely thought provoking.
Excellent stuff, love the series.
I tried to subscribe twice your concept and content are so good.

I truly think this stuff meshed with the hand to hand disciplines is the next major progression in martial arts.....
So far I see the Gun fighter getting stabbed almost every time, but the Knife fighter getting lethally shot every time?
Amazing demonstration
Yep
That part at the end where he falls down as the dude comes with the knife. Damn that's some clever shit.
In a knife fight, the loser dies at the scene... The winner dies an hour later at the hospital. ;-P
You know bro that is true because that same thing happen in my hometown in DR where a fight broke down between two guys and one stab the other and the other had a gun and kill the one that stab him and later after he was rushed to the hospital, he died before getting there.

Love both these guys - True masters !!
Doug Marcaida trained under Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje. The guy knows his stuff!!
Interesting, but Zero knows there's gonna be a knife coming at him, that gives him more reaction time...
+dom uncl True, but it is a training event. we want training to be as real as possible, but the reality is it's typically focused on one scenario.
also the fact that the assailant with a knife wouldn't Loudly approach, the man with a knife or in my personal case a sword could still be just as deadly as the man wielding a gun for the simple fact of silence, a man with a gun could be Dropped before they even get the inkling of the thought that their life is in danger

I understand you're wanting to change the subject but now your saying you carry a sword.
I have been watching a lot of "21 foot" knife attack videos. That falling back and down techniques is great.
cant get enough! We need more!
Great instructors , good understanding of both master .
Great Job... Vaiiii ZERO Sei troppo forte !!
Abigliamento SOD GEAR ???
Great video funker, Doug and zero, can't wait to see the next episode!

WOW! Love it. The info from both sides is great to see. Pls, keep it up.

Awesome video. Im glad i subscribed
Very good vid for self defense. Keep up the good work this may save a life.

aerosaaber heck yeah.
Instructor Zero looks like Jean Reno and automatically makes me think of Leon The Professional.
Excellent vid! Great opportunity in learning some important perspectives from both disciplines...
Awesome series. Like it a lot.
The think both of these men are quality. Zero: In hind sight do you feel you needed to apply angles to defensive draw? Clearing your right leg/foot after roll...lay it flat...for clearer line of fire?

Good stuff guys
maybe they could make a dvd series or web series of this.
Very awesome video
I bought the fox 599 after the series. I dont regret it one bit!
excellent idea
I think these would be so much better and more professional if the cameraman didnt comment or ask questions.

great concepts, unconventional
