its tea because its made out of tea leaves. Butter is added with tea leaves, milk, and salt and then smashed together. In the past people used to trade sichuan tea with tibetan salt.

Its real name is Su Chiya or Salt Tea , also known as Tibetan Butter Tea, butter made from yak milk

You didnt mention anything about the alttiude poblem. Is there any breathing difficulties?
No problem with the altitude but We did have difficulty breathing in Kathmandu due to the dust and pollution.
Looks like have to waer a mask there.
