Yes it’s finally happened - Damian has managed to decide which performance exhaust he is putting on the Porsche 718 Spyder - and today you’re coming along for the ride.
It’s been a long journey, and with lots of help from CarGuys fans, the chosen exhaust is the JCR titanium silenced race exhaust, costing £4.495 + VAT.
What’s involved in fitting a new exhaust? Will it really transform the sound enough to justify that price tag? Does TheCarGuys’ 718 Spyder now make the sort of noise that befits a 50s Porsche RSK? All these questions and more will be answered in this week’s episode.
Thank you for watching

Much improved quality of sound for sure. I'm surprised, it looks like it would be quite antisocial, but actually sounds just right
Agreed. Sounds spot on to me. An expensive, but worthwhile upgrade. Not sure about the seats though 😉
@@SteveBUK73 it is worthwhile just because the stock exhaust sounds rather offensive 😅
I agree with Damian: on a sports car, sound is as important as handling. And the difference before and after is night and day. Pricey, but how could you not do this? Very well shown with the 'old' and 'new' shots: it now sounds like a Porsche; the old one sounded like an 80 year old farting in a bath.
@@joelwakeliu6kjmrl477 Says the person insulting strangers on the internet...
The words: "Welcome to the cars Guys..." Makes my Friday evening & perfectly completes my week, and starts my weekend...especially when a Porsche is involved! And your car sound SO MUCH better! (Still doesn't pop & crackle like a 981 though.) Thanks Damian, for keeping us sane! 👍🏻😄👏🏻
I always watch on Saturday morning being 7 hours ahead in Thailand, morning coffee, fresh fruit lots of sunshine, great start to the day. Have a great weekend
its so hard to record an exhaust sound and to produce it on youtube, partly as the actual volume level is fixed, that said its clear to hear this new exhaust is more sonorous - I've been waiting for this one Damian and it doesn't disappoint, now should I do it too??
Get one !
You should and make a video about it.
Do it Roger and let us know which exhaust system you choose. It's a definite improvement.
😁
Hello Roger, The Car Guys said the sound is "fine" when I asked dies it still meet new EU sound regs (legal) I'd need to cofirm this before fitting one to my Cayman. Like does it affect Warenty/Insurance (no doubt as it cost lots more) Emissions/db output.
I doubt it would be worth the costs & Hastle for a better sound on a Base 718. I Love mine & it Pops in Miami Blue. All the best Steve.
You're the one who has to drive it fella. If it makes you happy, and produces 'that' grin, then it's all worth it. I like it. It's definitely something I would have done.
First of all, it is your car and your personal upgrade. Your honesty is again why I watch and click on this video. In that way, you and I are just the same. We all have not sat in your car, it is a lot more difficult for us to judge. But based on your words and what we can hear I think I understand the purchase. When it makes you smile a lot more in the end it doesn't matter anymore what it cost. It has been paid already so Damian, enjoy it.
Vast improvement is an understatement,
Sounds so much better throughout the rev range - great pic !
I originally thought this video wasn't worth my time from the title, but I'm glad I watched it, you presented it very well. I think if you have the money, it's worth the expense because it totally transforms the character of the car.
Sounds fantastic! Transformed it into the car we all knew it was. And reassuring to know it is possible, despite OPF.
You might wonder why Porsche didn’t do this themselves, they went back to 6 cylinders, so why not make it sound better! Brilliant vid as always!
I think you can blame EU noise and emissions regulations for that. Will be interesting to see if the new 992 GT3 will also sound as suffocated from the factory.
Sound & Looks is Everything to a Sports Car ......Everything.... You Want To Be Seen & Heard Thrilled Every Time You Get Into That Car ... You Have Done Well Damian Cheers .
I like the new sound. Not sure it’s a game changing improvement (well, not £5k’s worth anyway) but it does allow us to hear more of this engine’s character and personality, unstrangled. Personally, I think I like the sound of the previous Boxster Spyder’s exhaust a bit better but the new car is of course much better overall. Hope you enjoy it and please let us see how it beds in and the colour changes 👍
It is an improvement but I think I can hear the valves still interfering at the lower rpms as you increase the revs. It may be worth getting a valve control unit. I think SOUL make one.
Cargraphic
Sounds like an actual Porsche now, beautiful
TDesign do a little memory module you can easily install in the middle console that saves the auto stop setting when you turn the car off. You can then ignore that drone “feature” forever. Lovely.
New exhaust sounds great!
Wow! sounds amazing... I love the tone (and the change in tone through the rev range). Exhaust note is a fine art to sound good but not be obnoxious and you nailed it.
sounds miles better than before
Even via the compressed sound files of a RUclips video, played out through the Lilliputian speakers of a smartphone, that sounds like a marked improvement. When you are ‘a car guy’ Investing in the pleasure one derives from a machine is never money wasted. A great car appeals to all the senses and the sonic element is vital when you are chasing that next hit of automotive pleasure. Plus it was a sculptural thing of beauty, making the OEM box look pretty agricultural. Worth the wait. Thanks for sharing Damian’.
This video made a good end to a poor week for me. The new exhaust does sound much better, and the chap who fitted it seemed like a good bloke too. Here’s to many enjoyable miles Damian!
👍👍
What a wonderful noise. Completely transforms the car.
With the new exhaust, you can actually hear that the gases flow with pressure. On the old one, you couldn`t hear that a bit. It`s not too loud, the pipes look great and when you lay under the car in your free time you can see the color change. Beautiful!
Great improvement. Balance on noise level and quality just right. Price a bit high yes, BUT, a titanium exhaust that will probably last the life of the car. Great long term proposition.
It was a very good improvement! The sound is now more GT3’ ish that is every Porsche owner sound bench mark. Price really is a bit steep like you said. For 3 k would be a no brainer. Love the 718 Spyder too. Looks like a baby Carrera GT that we all love.
Genuine bloody goosebumps, what have you done! That exhaust has made that car, well done 100% approval rating.
Beat a path to Stratford upon Avon Porsche people.
BEN IS A NATURAL AT THIS VIDEO GIG ! GREAT WORK ON UNLEASHING THE NOISE DAMIAN.
I totally agree - Ben should do his own channel
Love the noise out of those pipes ! Giving me ideas but on a smaller budget !
@@martinboulden3540 Drill holes in the exhaust pipe? That small enough a budget for you ? 😂😂😂
I think cash flow is ok as I have my one percent share in my F50 for sale ! 😂
What a difference, the old sounded like it had a leak in the manifold. The new one sounds more as you would expect from a F6. Very nice.
Have you considered the Cargraphic Valve Controller? Given that the valves are closed from 2000-5000rpm with the sports exhaust on then having the valves open throughout the rev range makes a huge difference.
Holy poop! This is the first exhaust switching I actually like and wouldn't be ashamed of! What and improvement, yet still civilized.
It transformed it more that I thought it would, thumbs up
Great choice! Worth every penny! We only live once. Money is to be earned, grown, saved and SPENT.
That new exhaust has just unlocked a corker of an engine note. Way better than before by a long, long way. Well worth every single penny of your hard earned.
there is a reason why porsche , is a wining', race car', that exhaust is part of it! got that fast growler! tone' love it!
holy and this is the silenced one. sounds amazing and opf still installed. this is amazing
Thanks for sharing, I think the JCR exhaust will be the one going on my Spyder!
Ready when you are 😁
@@JCRDevelopments my Spyder is scheduled for delivery March 2021, do I go for silenced or un-silenced?
@@harryatkinson9757 tricky one, really depends if you want to maximise the sound available whilst retaining the OPF then non-silenced is the way to go
Friday has landed. Fantastic, means another episode of the car guys.
Brilliant videos, thanks for always posting such worthy content.
Racing home now to grab a beer and some popcorn. This expat in the US says ‘awesomeballs, it’s Friday 🍻’.
👍👍👍👍
Now it sounds awesome! JCR make great exhausts for Porsches! well done Damien!
Thanks dude - not been on your channel for some time - new GT4 on the way - need the spice of this exhaust connected to it :)
Sounds like a Porsche GT car at last ! 🤙🏼
I’ve been waiting for this video, love this care and what you’ve done with it so far
The new exhaust sounds fabulous! The cost is peanuts when you amortize over all those miles you will cover with a grin on your face. Two thumbs up 👍. Yours truly, a 981 GTS owner.
bought the exact same exhaust after watching this video. one of if not the best vid out there to get a good idea of what it sounds like, thank you
Totally agreed with you Damien on your decisions and if I don't "tuff" , the beautiful Pavarotti symphony sound. Fantastic 🎼🎷🎺📯
Damian/Jason....
Another great video! After covid i think you should have a meet & greet & maybe a comp to meet you both 1 on 1 & a chance for a ride in a car or two!
What a prize!
Nice to actually have a genuine RUclips channel, not paid off by brands and not afraid to tell it how it is. The Car Guys bridge the gap nicely between proper motoring journalists like Chris Harris, Henry Catchpole, Harry Metcalfe - and the influencer brigade.
Thank you for saying so. We’re just owners who also create. And don’t have time for bs
Great choice of exhaust...much better sound right across the Rev range and in all driving conditions 👍
Agreed that sound is such an important facet to enjoying a car. Pity OPFs have been introduced and that Porsche play it so safe with their stock exhausts. Guess it’s to comply with various geo regs.
I would say it’s an improvement but how much so, you would need to hear it in person
Terrific result! Big improvement and it seems perfectly balanced: great noise but not obnoxious!
Sound like £5k. The exhaust plus the decals and seats makes the car look truly special!
Looks like the TDF has a new custodian! During my nightly daydreaming noticed it wasn’t on Octane anymore!
Add headers with sports cats and gpf delete good for 20-30hp.
Well done! If it makes you smile it’s worth every penny. I’m dead jealous.
I think you’ve done a cracking job in turning the car into something that you want, rather than following everyone else. Sounds great. Yes £5k is a lot, but if you’re keeping that car long term, you’ll get plenty of enjoyment from that rumble. 👍
Thanks 👍
Hi Damian, would you consider doing a similar modification to your Pista? This is from a fellow Pista owner (based not far away in Andover) and considering a similar modification. Keep up the great work on the channel! Thanks
Love what you’re doing with this car! Something about period retro looks on modern Porsches.
Makes the car sound as it should from factory & the trumpet tail pipes suit the' Little Bast@@d' look of the tweaks ..........
Such a transformation!! Not cheap but totally different driving experience for sure!!
Can’t wait until I get my Spyder in April. Will definitely change out the exhaust. Thanks for the video.
It proves that even with the dreaded OPF’s you can get a decent sound :-)
I do not see any OPF´s on this new JCR exhaust. That makes it illegal in the EU. Ahhh, the UK is leaving the EU... maybe you need not to bother.
@@HGUlmke The system connects to the OPF's - You can see that in the video.
In my peasant universe I could not face paying so much for an exhaust but in your universe that is an excellent purchase which will add residual value to the degree it would have hardly cost you anything when it comes to resale time.
Your emotions will always lead to getting around particulate filters...with the passion you have its a win win.. Great content 👍
What a difference. Expensive for sure but as a proper petrolhead the sound and drama is a very big factor in the enjoyment of driving.
What happens to the original exhaust? Do most people keep it and ship it back home just in case they want to resell the car as stock?
Totally worth the money, the sound difference has vastly improved!
Yes exactly that
Thought the new exhaust had taken your breath away in the 11th minute. Great new sound and good investment for the miles I'm sure you'll do. Ever considered trying to change out/paint/colour those black plastic air intakes?
Hard to capture on video you did a nice job. Its hard to get it to sound “race” if the particulate filters and 800 cell cats in the manifolds are left untouched. Definitely still streetable
@07:26 very Paul Whitehouse “does she bark at you when you rev her sir? Oooh suits you sir! Suits you!”
This is the video I voted for and I admit I did think with the old exhaust “what’s he on about?” But the new one sounds so sweet!
7 dislikes? Really people????
It sounds like an old race car befitting the whole theme of the car, well worth the expense if you can afford it. Turn the driving sections black & white and you could be Paul Newman or Steve McQueen racing with that sound.
Hi CarGuys, Ben must have been very pleased with you leaving your camera with him for the day! 😂 Great work Ben👍 Sounds great! So much better Damian 👍
Worth the money Damien 💷
The new exhaust completes the car & it sound's awesome! 👍😍
Sounds absolutely awesome on start up-that for me was the most immediate difference.Overall improvement in sound 80%.Overall value for money 60%-in my humble opinion it’s not £5000 worth of improvement.
Hi car guys. I find the soundtrack great. Thank you for this video. My new 718 Spyder does not sound as good as my previous 981 s. Have you deleted the GPF? Do you have pops when downshifting? Congratulations for your choice.
Quality build as well as sound, interesting to see if you gained any more power?
Check out our dyno test video, back to back. Demonstrates the gains found with this system
The new sound is a huge improvement. 5k is a lot, but a small % of the cost if that car. Nicely done. You could probably recover some of that by selling the old but still new one.
All upgrades done proper :) Nice work Damian.
I like the improvement in sound without crossing over into crazy loud. I also like that there is a shut off option but I'm not so sure about the cone shape of the exhaust tips. overall it's a winner.
Just added a Litchfield exhaust to my 718 GTS 4.0. Really pleased with the upgrade at just under 4K. Not quite as aggressive as yours but still transforms the car.
Now it's time to give it some beans
Wow, sounds so good, reminds me of a 997 GT3 sound, proper Porsche noise finally. The spec and those seats are just outstanding.
The new exhaust has a slightly higher pitch at WOT. You’ve captured the differences between old vs new very well and the new does sound better. Can you legally remove the particulate filter?
Another great video... I've watched this a few times so I hope you have your ads monetised..! I have a 718 GT4 and ai assume the exhaust on that is the same as yours was..? (But I'm not positive) I'd be keen to know the model number of the exhaust if you do find sharing.
Thanks in advance..Andrew
sounds great. closer to a 981, but with a bit more pitch and volume
So cool, love the all round package and hope you get a chance to go on a road trip with the car soon!
Great choice Damian. It seems to have gone from a relatively tuneless ‘blare’ to a proper Porsche ‘howl.’ 5 grand to transform the car seems like an absolute bargain.
Now that sounds a lot better!
Yes........yes that works. 👌🏻
Finishes the car off nicely
Every time I see this car it increases my hankering for an 05-06 987 Boxster. But a bigger house beckons the £££. 😞
Nice review too, I like the honesty about the price and value.
Good investment! Car sounds MUCH better and was a pleasure to hear the improvement! PPF still in place, no?
Sounds as racy as it looks🙂🙂👍🏾
Sounds so much better than it did! Great video 👍
That is awesome Damian, congrats on finding something that you are happy with!
From what I hear about other high end aftermarket exhaust systems costing, you got lucky by at least 50%!
Can't wait to here the new air intake too.
You never really get a true experience of the sound via a video, but I bet it sounds fantastic live and in the flesh...
5k wow 😳😳
Wow that exhaust has transformed the Spyder!
1) That’ll do nicely, well worth doing. 🔊🔊🔊.
2) Cap - 90s Lucas Arts gaming logo. Nostalgia points awarded 🌟.
2. I thank you
Love the new exhaust but have to roll my eyes a bit on the price ... even in Titanium seems about double fair market. But still she does sing sweetly at high revs so the improvement is real and you actually got what you paid for . Cheers!
£5k ? Not VFM for me but (and this is important) an honest opinion from a guy who has a bit of dosh in the mattress. This is why we like The Car Guys: no BS and no snobbery. I think it sounds lovely, matches the look of the car. Another great choice.
👍👍
Much more better, deeper and a little more crispy. Pleasing my ears!
The Stock HP and Torque has been shown to be more than this back box setup. The suspected reason being that with this, after cat and part filter restriction, flow is further restricted by convoluted albeit straight through piping. In the stock arrangement the huge mixing muffler offers the negative pressure to de-restrict the choked flow upstream. So if you also want more performance AND sound, go with the headers as well.
I didn’t want more performance and I wanted to keep the warranty intact
@@TheCarGuysTV Thanks for your reply. Love you guys.
Excellent vid!! This test reminds me of the Nick Murray test between a 991.2 C4S with and without the sports exhaust option.. in this case (for me personally) the standard set up sounds better at lower speeds than the modified set up (more base).. probably down to the Mic. I could be completely wrong of course..
Its a lot of money for en exhaust but its a lot better sound and adds proper character to your car, money well spent, enjoy it and I am looking forward to more quality videos, happy xmas guys
What a great car, the new exhaust sounds terrific, enjoy 👍❤️🚘
wow such a quality improvement, that's stunning!
