  • In this episode we explore a town called Newberry Springs, where part of the neighborhood has been completely taken over and covered in sand (Sunken City). Located in the western Mojave Desert in California, this town was named after a spring that supplied water to the local Santa Fe Railroad. While Newberry Springs is still an active town this area has been buried under sand dunes due to very high winds. In the early 1990's the residents had to abandon their homes because of the endless build up of sand and dust. Mostly all of the structures are filled with sand, even as high as the ceiling. These ruins give us a glimpse into this neighborhood's past and the possible future of other areas plagued by drought.

These houses were built on the flat areas of the valleys, in a region where the mountains around channel the westerly (Santa Ana) winds to great velocities. The original Newberry Springs was built at the foot of the mountains to the south, and development spread to the north. Blowing sand is a normal thing in these areas, and it tends to fill depressions or build up on the downwind side of obstructions. It behaves very similar to blowing snow in other areas of the country. In this region, the wind blows constantly most days and is typically gusty and can be quite strong (30-40 mph). It seems that county road crews plowed the sand off of a road to the west of these homes, piling it on the downwind side. The sand was then picked up by the wind and carried toward this neighborhood. When it came to the houses, it built up. The build up can happen very quickly, and objects that project above the ground surface can be buried very quickly.
The cinder block (brick) construction is typical for the region. It's cheaper than lumber and withstands the wind better. Much if the construction in the area is non-standard buildings, because of the relatively lack of building or appearance requirements. This place is out in the sticks, generally working class folks, so nothing fancy. You can live here and a lot of people do, but it's a tough place to live.

A lot of the trash and debris was probably dumped there after the home was abandoned. Some may have been left by squatters. The shell casings are from people shooting in the area (not especially safely, but whatever). The military has several large training areas nearby, which explains the helicopter. That area is also known as the meth capitol of Southern California for the large number of meth labs found there.

Hello I wanted to just say I really do love your channel been watching you for a while and looking at a lot of your older videos as well as your new stuff you guys do a great job but I wanted to point out me being from California that you don’t exactly have it right you have to understand you living in New York you’re from a smaller area that has a a lot of diversity in one small space where as we are just a very large state we do also have a lot of diversity but it’s spread out over a larger area we actually have a lot of very cool different types of people in this state you just have to be able to explore the whole state to get the whole feel you can’t just go off of being in one town and generalizing it that way you might’ve just ran into some odd people or people that just don’t like outsiders but there’s a lot of friendly people in California me being one of them and I’m very welcoming to all walks of life.

The houses were built on the edge of the majave River. Some work was done to the west of the houses and the top soil was removed. After that the sand path changed. The owners tried to maintain the sand for awhile but eventually gave up. The first house in the video is a 2 story.
