Thank you very much for uploading for us to enjoy. Had no idea Edgar still had a weekly radio program with Charlie McCarthy & company as late as the mid-50s ! And fascinating that his male vocalist was Gary Crosby, son of Bing & who was known mostly for his acting career.

Thanks Jubal for listening. Gem of a show especially with Gary Crosby.

Thanks for poting this recording. The 'Night Before Christmas" segment was included on a (78 RPM?) record my family had as a child, part of a Christmas Seals campaign. My Dad had worked at the Burlington NC AM station in the 1950's and got to keep some of the old broadcast records. Another Christmas Seals record we had was Louis Armstrong, seeking donations to fight Tuberculosis. Dad's friend, Bill Diffey, remained at the station as a DJ into the 1960's and when we would visit, Bill would load us down with 45s and LPs that the station had extra: I still have Dino, Desi, and Billy's debut LP and the 45 of the Who's "Picture of Lily" and some 45s by Lothar and the Hand People, and some by the Knickerbockers.

This is such a great story. What memories you have from your dad being part of NC AM. Glad that you have all those 45's with some great treasures on them. Hope you can share more stories with us.

This was the last season Edgar Bergen appeared on radio. The fact that he couldn't find any sponsors during the season- and the fact that, by 1955-'56, more people were watching TV instead of listening to radio at that hour- were the reasons he reluctantly signed off after 19 years on the air (which began with his weekly appearances on "THE CHASE AND SANBORN HOUR", which he eventually took over).

I didn't realize Candice Bergen was Edgar Bergen's daughter.

She claims he neglected her in favor of Charlie. I’m not convinced. She didn’t miss many meals in their Bel Air home in her childhood.

Edgar left Charlie $10,000 in his will, Candy got nothing.

Anyone know what religion Edgar Bergen was? I am assuming Candice was the same.

Being of Scandanavian heritage, he was probably raised Lutheran. As to his own religious faith or practices (or his daughter's), I have no idea.

At 5:56, why does Edgar say, "Think of me, Charlie", thus giving Charlie a hint? The line goes "While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads". What does one have to do with the other? I love the "Bald Head" part.

Charlie occasionally needled Bergen about his baldness. When they did a "Northwest Mounties" sketch in June 1954, Nelson Eddy asked Charlie, "Have you seen Mountie Bergen?". "Oh, you mean MOUNTIE BALDY?", Charlie smirked.

I thought he said "Red DVD's" at 6:13.

Probably "Red BVD's" You know, long handled underwear, or long johns or red flannel Union suits. BVD was a brand name of underwear.
