I've recently attended a child's one year birthday. The parents gave away bowls of goldfish as gifts to the party goers. I was concerned that many of the fish would die due to the ignorance many people have when it comes to raising pets, especially unexpected pets.
I now own 13 goldfish that I never expected to have.
I have a 20 gallon tank on order but it looks like I'll have to get five more 20 gallon tanks. Is there a safe way to house more fish together? Is the size limit due to how quickly the tank gets dirty or is it a stress issue?
I love animals and I want these fish to have the best lives ever.

depending the type of goldfish you’ll need different sizes. common goldfish can get the size of a small koi and need a minimum of 75 gallons per fish. if they’re fancy i’d recommend 30-45 gallons and add 20 per fish. the need of a big tank is because of how big they get and how active they are. they’re much smarter then we think and can learn many things like i taught mine to play with marbles in a matter of days. big tank size also does help with keeping water clean. with that many goldfish in only a 20 gal is really bad you’d need to change the water at least like once a day. so i recommend surrendering some to a pet store so you can successfully take care of at least a couple. i recommend getting a pond if they’re common goldfish or a big water trough that’s at least 120 gallons. if they’re fancy a 50 gal will do for 2-3. if you need a good filter i recommend sponge filters they work good for them. if u have any questions just ask

@@KoTsuki-jo1pw I agree, common Goldfish can get bigger than fancy goldfish. Additionally, common goldfish is the smart one and has a longer life span compare to the fancy goldfish.
Fancy goldfish are prone to disease, low mortality rate and requires extra effort to be healthy.

My mother 'loved' goldfish but was clueless to how to keep them. She kept them in a glass tank without a filtration system, without any gravel or ANY decoration. She didn't feed them, cos she said that they died when overfed so sge didbt bother. and they all died eventually. I remember the last goldfish was just by itself, in cloudy green water with nothing else. Looking back I cried about it often and regretted not doing more, but back then I was like 7 and didn't know any better.

It all depends on your water parameters. Order some tests online or at a pet store. You want 0PPM of Ammonia, 0PPM of Nitrite, 10 to 35PPM of NitrAte. If you consistently have the Ammonia and Nitrite at 0, then you only need to do a partial change once Nitrate gets to about 40 PPM or if there is a lot of visible waste. Make sure to add dechlorinator and beneficial bacteria in after the change 😊 hope this helps

    • @goldfishenthusiast3265
      @goldfishenthusiast3265 3 года назад

@@Caitlin917 There are a lot of tips but here are a few, If you need to ask any questions feel free to! If I read 'em I'll be sure to answer. Here are the tips:
      1. Don't rely much of testing strips or kits, Do regular water changes, If you think you have ammonia in your tank, There will be signs. Your goldfish will have bloody streaks in its fins, There will be burns on the gills as well as the body, The fins will rot the water will get cloudy.
      2. Whatever you do, Don't overstock the tank and DO NOT forget your weekly water changes.
      3. Don't feed adult fish food with really high amounts of protein, Can cause kidney failure which is incurable. The older the fish, The less food they require. If you have a young baby fry (or a fish which is less than a year) feed it about 4-5 times a day (small amounts) with high protein food for optimum growth if your fish is at the teen side (more than a year but less than two) feed it 1-3, times a day with a balanced diet an adult fish should be fed a balanced diet including fruits veggies etc.
      4. Do NOT feed floating pellets or flakes, You can however check out the videos on "How to make floating fish pellets sink using a syringe" I personally feed my fish like that cause sinking pellets are rarely available here and is expensive too, I don't recommend floating pellets since it can cause the fish to gulp a lot of air and develop swim bladder issues.
      5. Cycle your tank. Don't rely on bottled beneficial bacteria (do a lot more research if you don't know about the tank cycling process.
      6. Dont leave the lights on for too long nor keep them in the dark. It can cause colours to fade in both cases.
      7. Don't get tanks that are too tall, Try getting a horizontal tank so that the fish has room to swim. Get a rectangular fish tank since goldfish tend to do better in those.
Special tip: When you add your new fish in the tank first aclimate them to the temperature (you can find how to do this on yt) and, To avoid ANY stress leave them in the dark for a day or two (don't feed them during this time) that will avoid a lot of stress since the fish will just fall asleep. Try keeping a goldfish tank bare bottom and also, Try keeping a good filter with a lot of biological filter media since a bare bottom tank doesn't have much surface area for the beneficial bacteria to grow on. You shouldn't order fish online (atleast avoid to) since usually they get shipped from over seas which causes A LOT ofstress TRY and buy fish from the nearest pet store (if available). That's not all, There's a lot more to it, Don't worry, it's not that hard to keep goldfish, Just do your research and don't rely on the pet store owners since they usually misguide people cause they want people to spend their money. A lot more tips I won't be able to fit in this comment, Just keep researching! Good luck!

It is not often, it is only when your goldfish has some internal parasites. You will notice it when they don't want to eat if you feed them or showing a lethargic swimming movements. You also don't need to feed them with garlic if it is only an external parasites, you can salt bath or salt wash instead.

    • @goldfishenthusiast3265

A group of goldfish or a pair of goldfish is enough to keep them entertained. A goldfish requires a minimum of 10 gallons of water (depends on size, You can follow the "inch per 10 gallon" rule. Never keep a goldfish in a tank that is:
      1. Too tall
      2. Too Small (0.5 - 8 gallons)
      3. Not in the correct shape e.g. (Half moon, Round, Cylindrical etc.)
Tip: Keep goldfish in a regular tank, They require space to swim so keep in mind that the perfect goldfish tank you're looking to buy shouldn't be too tall or too short in terms of height and width should be 1 ft or more. The length can vary depending on what species you're planning to keep.
