  • In 2014, Mutaz Essa Barshim and Bogdan Bondarenko engaged in one of the most enthralling high jump battles in history, swapping blows throughout the season in their bid to claim the Diamond Trophy.
    By the time the final in Brussels came around, the two remained neck and neck, and the stage was set for a groundbreaking competition.
    While Bondarenko sailed to 2.40m without problem, Barshim nearly stumbled at 2.37m, before rallying and jumping 2.40m himself at the first attempt. What followed was a moment of athletics history, as the Qatari cleared 2.43m to take victory, the IAAF Diamond League title and move his PB to within two centimetres of Javier Sotomayor's world record.

    They had an even better competition that year. I was in the stadium in New York when they both cleared 2.42m and both had attempts at a WR height of 2.46m. Barshim had one attempt that was agonizingly close. It's the only time ever that two athletes have cleared higher than 2.40 in the same competition. It was an amazing season for both of them. Barshim remains at the top 7 years later which is remarkable.

      @subie1019 4 года назад +16

      He doesn’t seem that heavy, but he is heavier as compared to barshim, most probably he has stronger legs that allows him to jump higher. Also he has a height advantage over barshim, barshim is 6’3, bondarenko is 6’6

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 3 года назад +9

      Bondarenko runs a different strategy from Barshim. In 2014 he rarely had more than 6 or 7 jumps in any competition, including the one he won at 2.42 against Barshim in New York. He came in at 2.25 or something. A high jumper needs to conserve energy and the best jumps are generally 5, 6, 7 & 8. This is an anaerobic issue. You need to get rid of the lactic acid and that takes time. Barshim probably had 12 jumps.

    I didn't see exactly the detail of the Barshim's jump, but if he had a clearance at least 2 cm on the 243 cm jump, he definitely JUMPED HIGHER than Sotomayor in his world record, which pushed the rod down significantly at his 245 cm jump, although it didn't fall (which means he didn't jump 245 cm in reality, but somewhat lower).

    • @tradewins
      @tradewins 2 года назад +2

      I agree. In terms of height that was actually jumped, Barshim exceeded Sotomayor. It's just unfortunate that the bar wasn't set at or above the world record height when Barshim's jump occurred, so it's not an official records. But unofficially? Barshim is the king.
