- In 2014, Mutaz Essa Barshim and Bogdan Bondarenko engaged in one of the most enthralling high jump battles in history, swapping blows throughout the season in their bid to claim the Diamond Trophy.
By the time the final in Brussels came around, the two remained neck and neck, and the stage was set for a groundbreaking competition.
While Bondarenko sailed to 2.40m without problem, Barshim nearly stumbled at 2.37m, before rallying and jumping 2.40m himself at the first attempt. What followed was a moment of athletics history, as the Qatari cleared 2.43m to take victory, the IAAF Diamond League title and move his PB to within two centimetres of Javier Sotomayor's world record. He broke this today, by his ideal sportsmanship , sharing gold with his Olympic rival :) ! 🏆🥇🏅👑⭐️
They are not rival. They are friends !
So true man
@@callmelio Rival is not a bad word in the world of sport it simply means both competitors are formidable and it is not one sided clash. You can be friends and still be rivals.
they are obviously lovers. all of you are just way too bigoted. smh.
They chickened out... I mean, what if all jumpers failed all 3 attempts on first height? All gold medals?
They had an even better competition that year. I was in the stadium in New York when they both cleared 2.42m and both had attempts at a WR height of 2.46m. Barshim had one attempt that was agonizingly close. It's the only time ever that two athletes have cleared higher than 2.40 in the same competition. It was an amazing season for both of them. Barshim remains at the top 7 years later which is remarkable.
I'm not sure what you wrote here, but they jumped 2.28, 2.31, 2.34, 2.37, 2.40 and 2.43

He is the most elegant high jumper I've ever seen!
He's the best of the best, I hope he will one day break the world record
The world record is not his, so he is not the best of the best, even worse when that record is from 1993
@@luisportella1760 best of the best currently
@@luisportella1760 Sotomayor is just a legend, but there was that PED scandal at the end of his career as well. Barshim is literally the closest anyone has gotten to a record set by a possible doper.
@@andrewhsu7202 lol if you had studied Sotomayor history you'd had known that he's been beating World records ever since he was 15 years of age...
He just was a phenom!!! He already was makin' noise at the youth level!!
It's not like a Lance Armstrong scenario!
Actually Sotomayor has been crushing records and winning since his younger days...!!!
HE WONT
barshim cleared 2.43 by miles, he definitely would’ve equalled the world record or broken it with that jump
well... similarly like Artur Partyka or Sotomayor have jumps during career estimated by experts to be around 2m 50 cm.... but bar was much lower. so dosnt count ...
The bar is stupid. Should just directly measure height
Idk ... his bum didn't have too much space underneath.
@@janhuruk2854 yeah, true especially with Partyka
@@appa609 Quite difficult to do.
The smoothest jumper of all time. Bondarenko was a huge performer in a different style.
Barshim has it inside him to tie with Sotomayor, or even beat the world record
I don’t know how Bondarenko jumps so high, he seems so big and heavy.
He doesn’t seem that heavy, but he is heavier as compared to barshim, most probably he has stronger legs that allows him to jump higher. Also he has a height advantage over barshim, barshim is 6’3, bondarenko is 6’6
Bondarenko runs a different strategy from Barshim. In 2014 he rarely had more than 6 or 7 jumps in any competition, including the one he won at 2.42 against Barshim in New York. He came in at 2.25 or something. A high jumper needs to conserve energy and the best jumps are generally 5, 6, 7 & 8. This is an anaerobic issue. You need to get rid of the lactic acid and that takes time. Barshim probably had 12 jumps.

My favorite game and best league
He can break the world record ❤ Soon the world champion 2019
2021 lol
Sotomayor's incredible feat stands the test of time.
The fact that he has leaped past the 2.40 mark a whopping twenty-four times while no one has done it more than a handful of times is astounding.
Jai Guruji
You mean 2.40m, 8 feet is 2.44m. He's the only one to have jumped 8 feet.
Sotomayor alone has jumped 2.40 on twenty-one different occasions while Barshim and Bondarenko (second and third in number of 2.40s respectively) added up to twenty, that's enough.
His chance at the WR may be over. But he has always been fun to watch. One day, someone is going to break Sotomayor's record.
What about today's performance from Bashim and Tamberi at TOKYA 2021... a moment to remember.. welldone both.
What's astonishing is Barshim's 2.40m was cleared by a good 10cm at least which would give him a 2.50m well above the world record and he's only 6 foot 2" in height which is relatively modest for a high jumper
Imagine Bondarenko with Barshim's technique.
He can easily get the world record height if he decide to go for 2.46 with that jump.
Yeah think so.. still got a little bit clearance at 2.43, did he attempt to jump higher after he defeated that guy?
bobo chan yea and he didn't clear but came home with gold and hit the road
I agree. He can do it.
He cannot
Easily? Really? Easily?
👌👍very good
Why cant he try another attempt to breaking the WR? I bet he can as his performance that day was magical
It looked like he was going at least 2.55 m there. Somehow in the next round he had 3 failed attempts at 2.46 m. Fortunately he's still on form.
I think his coach wanted to prevent another injury so close to the Olympics.
He just did
@@ShiroKage009 it was 2014..the olympics were 2 years later
he has tried and failed
I remember the last attempt for him he failed due to his legs not his hips that's crazy to imagine that in 2.46 👏👏
Can he break the World Record in Tokyo 2021 Olympic?
How astonishing that the 1993 record still holds today
Probably cuz of doping?
@@smsyts or maybe not...
Well the long jump world record still stands from 1991
@@akgotgame1987 And Triple Jump from 1995, both of which no one really gets close too
I was in the stadium and he was probably at 2.60 with that jump, that was amazing.
I didn't see exactly the detail of the Barshim's jump, but if he had a clearance at least 2 cm on the 243 cm jump, he definitely JUMPED HIGHER than Sotomayor in his world record, which pushed the rod down significantly at his 245 cm jump, although it didn't fall (which means he didn't jump 245 cm in reality, but somewhat lower).
I agree. In terms of height that was actually jumped, Barshim exceeded Sotomayor. It's just unfortunate that the bar wasn't set at or above the world record height when Barshim's jump occurred, so it's not an official records. But unofficially? Barshim is the king.
nope, if the bar stayed up then he cleared it.
drunkard
The way he cleared 2.40 looked liked he could have cleared 2.45 in that same jump and plenty of room spare maybe even 2.47m
@@rgvrgra Stupid comment of course he is! he has been no.1 for quite a while.

r u high on crack cocaine
I hope Barshim will break the world record one day!
He was at 2.45 or more in those last two jumps
Wow 😯 he is the best jumper that I ever seen
He later failed to break WR, still amazing af, it will be a few years until sotemayor record is broken. I predict it will go in the next olympics in 2024 or next championship maybe 2022 next year
Wow very high 😲😲😲😲😲
It’s hard for me to see them clear well above and wonder what they could’ve maxed -
he sadly will not break the WR, that was his peak.
He need to take it slow, Sotomayor jumped 43 and 44 years before gettig to 45, get to go one at a time, a move from 43 to 46 can get you psyched out or injured.
This jump looks higher than sotomayors 2.45 jump which was technical perfection
once sotomayor jumps 2.50, but the bar wa in 2.40..... amaizing
not sure id call brushing the bar multiple times "perfection"
Does anyone know what spikes he is wearing?
Getting close to Stomayor. 27 year old record at stake
Well-done barshem
If someone could beating Sotomayor's World Record is Barshim and no other one!
i thought this was long jump for a second
방금 우상혁 선수 보고 왔습니다~
barshim was so close to breaking the world record i think 3 years ago at 2.46 he was clear over it but the bar just slowly fell off
damn thats the height of men's volleyball net
Unimaginable when you put it that way
Barshim will tie or break Sotomayors record
Brashim is the new sotomayor .
not yet.
also, hes not new
When we gonna evolved to laser measurements to see how high the jump above the bar to get max readings !!?
But the point of high jump is not to reach a certain height above the ground but rather to get the bar not to fall. To focus on the maximum height and not on the bar would mean to change the sport.
that happens in world champs this yr.
but the bar is needed
the height he produce that jump could pass 2.45 or getting to 2.45
7' 11 3/4" he's scared to death of 8 🦶
r u drunk
amazing by Barshim but damn look at the jumping abilities of Bondarenko, it looks like he takes a small leap and just flies over the bar at 2:37
Allahu Akbar... ❣️
Arab people have good heart
Sotomayor Cuba 🇨🇺🇨🇺
Barshim is so cute!!! I love dark skinned guys
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal at 2.56m😂😂😂😂
2.56 max head height and going over 2.56 with the whole body are two very very different things m8
