I think Bakugo having known the OFA secret for so long, he knows he cant be the #1 hero, he realizes for him to be great he needs to push Izuku, either by training and keeping up with him, yelling at him, or in this case, protecting him from himself.

Bakugou's apology really got me, but two other things really hit me hard:
    1. Iida saying "I'll ALWAYS race to you."
    2. Kaminari telling him he needed to just rest and take a bath. Because, as someone who has suffered through major depression for years, sometimes the only thing you can do to feel better is just soak in the bath or shower. It absolutely CAN be the first step in healing.

There were two things that hit me in this episode.
    1. The moment when Deku said that Eri doesn't need him is just heartbreaking. He was the first person that ever showed her kindess, he played a huge role in rescuing her from Overhaul, he did so much during school festival (preparations and fight with Gentle Criminal) just to see her smile. I guess I won't exaggerate if I say that he is one of the most important people for Eri. And now he says that she doesn't need him. As if someone could replace him that easily.
    2. Bakugo calling him IZUKU. One thing is that he didn't say Deku (what he usually used as an insult), but another is that first names are used by close friends (he could say "Midoriya" but still chose "Izuku"). So Bakugo shows by both his actions and his words that De... I mean IZUKU is someone important to him.

The fact that Bakugo, for once, stepped back to send Iyda to catch to catch Deku, instead of charging ahead selfishly, hit me the hardest in this episode..
And THEN his speech😢 he didn't even call him "Deku"🥺😭

Someone said one of the best things about MHA is that it really rewards its fans for sticking with the series. The character arcs are so satisfyingly rewarding and the callbacks and flashbacks really punctuate the emotions the show wants to convey. Personally (no spoilers), I’d love to see characters like Gentle and Lady Nagant get redemption moments (and they probably will. How is the question).
This episode and “Threads of Fate” were probably my favorites in a season filled with so many good ones (and it’s not even over yet, be prepared for the next two!). This episode in particular also highlighted what MHA does better than any other anime (or at least shonen): it doesn’t need an actual fight scene to touch you emotionally. Bravo to everyone involved in this all-time episode 👏👏

Love, LOVE, LOVE this episode. Let's discuss the parallels. First, we have Iida thinking back to when he thought he absolutely had to face the villain before him to the point of even throwing away his own safety. Izuku is playing right into AFO's hands by tiring himself out but he feels like he can't just sit and rest when Shigaraki always knows where he is. Izuku helped Iida with his problem. Now Iida steps up to help him with his. Next up, the Bakugo rescue that happened. Back then, Shoto made the ice ramp as Iida flew through the sky. Izuku had so many bottled up feelings for Bakugo. So many things he wanted to say to him. But he knew Bakugo would see it as a sign of weakness if he reached out to grab his hand. So he took a step back and allowed Kirishima to do it. Now, Shoto makes another ice ramp and Bakugo is the one who has the bottled up feelings inside him. He has so many things he wants to say. So many things he NEEDS to say. But he puts his feelings aside and lets Iida grab Izuku's hand because he's designed for speed. We see Tenya get to reaffirm that helping a child in need is what he does. Meddling in affairs where people might reject your help is what being a hero is all about. But more importantly, Deku needs to take a bath. Kaminari was right.
All jokes aside, let's talk about Bakugo's speech. These two have such a complex relationship. From childhood best friends to a strained relationship due to Bakugo feeling inferior, to Bakugo and Izuku reluctantly working together, to Bakugo telling Izuku to stay back when he was captured to his meltdown in their second fight to them being proper rivals and Bakugo helping Deku with his quirks and then jumping in the way to save him without thinking like Izuku did for him in the past. They have such a complex relationship filled with a whirlwind of feelings. But Bakugo was willing to be vulnerable not just in front of Deku, but everything in their class. He swallowed his pride and admitted his weakness. He told Deku that it was okay to rest. That it's okay to have shortcomings because they'll have his back. And he ran up to catch Izuku when he fell. Iida caught Izuku, Bakugo made him feel comfortable enough to finally rest on his shoulder, and now the public has to be convinced that he can stay at the school. Deku thinks he's useless if he can't save people. But now it's time to address an important question. Who saves the heroes when they're in trouble?
Side note, I almost forgot the Mineta line. Fun fact, in the manga, people were freaking out because of Mineta saying he fell for Deku. The fandom nearly having a meltdown at bi Mineta was peak chaos.

*I’m happy to see that I’m not the only one who was crying by the end of this...*
*Class 1-A really showed off their teamwork here. Together, they were able to keep up with One for All, and go toe to toe with it. Granted the goal was never really to fight back, just to escape, but still...*
*If I’m being honest, part of me is still kind of scared for 1-A in the long run. Like, yeah, against One for All they put up a great fight, but against All for One, I hope they make it out of this unscathed.*

This episode is so beautiful for so many reasons and it's the one I've been most looking forward to seeing your reaction to. The entire voice cast did an absolute phenomenal job and I bet for them it was an amazing thing to see their characters' growth and feel proud of them in the same way we fans are. Especially since the majority of the voice actors don't read the manga because they want to be surprised and give the most genuine performance they can.
For me, watching it in the dub allowed me to feel completely immersed and emotional in a way I don't think I would've if I watched in the sub.
Justin Briner's ability to bring out the fear, concern, sadness, despair and relief all at once under the guise of anger in Deku's words was absolutely perfect, and he deserves an award for that performance if you ask me. It surpasses his work in the Deku vs Muscular fight in season 3.
Iida's speech about meddling when you don't need to truly came full circle, and to hear Todoroki tell Deku to let him share the burden of defeating AFO with his classmates shows how Shoto has learned to accept influence from others.
And then of course, there's Bakugo's apology, which is my absolute favorite moment in terms of story and voice performance. To see how Bakugo's redemption arc has blossomed is one of the best I've seen in any show. Most viewers don't really remember the fact that he is only 16 yrs old and as far as we are aware the events of episode 1 when he told Deku to commit suicide was about a year and a half ago in MHA time. For Bakugo to realize his shortcomings as an aspiring hero, understand and acknowledge why he bullied Deku all those years, and be brave enough to apologize to Izuku in front of the entire class is awe inspiring. To mature that much in such a short amount of time without feeling like a cop out is phenomenal writing.
What's even more beautiful in terms of voice work is that Clifford Chapin (Bakugo's VA) used a technique in the apology scene that he hasn't used since the beginning of the show. In season 1 he used to use a softer voice for normal dialogue and then ramp up to the yelling when necessary, but it put so much strain on him that he almost lost his voice. After that he used an angrier tone all the time so that when he needed to yell it would be slightly easier on his vocal cords. For this scene he returned to the softer tone, which is also really symbolic for this moment because it reflects how genuine Bakugo is being and it's in essence his true voice.

I honestly never even imagined anything could ever take the crown from All-Might’s last stand in season 3. It has everything with its multi season buildup and only gets better on rewatch with Nighteye context and Shigaraki backstory and implied Nana foreshadowing still unseen. But this episode so EASILY took the crown as it just has something for EVERYONE. With an INCREDIBLY adult conversation with a ton of nuance that really adds to it.
What if everyone is correct, but it doesn’t matter because the paranoid exhausted delirious one in the worst emotional health of his life is proving his points SUBSTANTIALLY more than the others? They say don’t run, and you say run! (Sorry I had to.) You can rest, and more, but 2 apocalyptic forces are tracking his every move and sending assassins after him. If the big ones come out and decide to attack him, NO ONE IN PROXIMITY is safe. Deku has seen some of the most skilled fighters and heroes he has ever seen LITERALLY be treated like fodder. And worse? Because the class is following Bakugo’s lead in many ways, they COMPLETELY miss the margin on what this is about.
They don’t make this about Izuku Midoriya. They make this about his burden, his mission, his fears, and more. But with where he’s at, there’s no conclusion he ALREADY hasn’t considered. They JUST learned what he has and are thinking he’s struggling interpreting that meaning. If anything that’s the one thing he never had a doubt on! He doesn’t need a lecture in the ideals, he is in a personal crisis under the worst pressure of his life. But so many of them keep failing to check on the person underneath ALL of this. Izuku Midoriya. That’s why none of them are capable of stopping him.
I really like this superhero analogy. Imagine if you found Superman. He’s in a room where everything is charred to a crisp and bodies scattered around him with blood everywhere even on himself. He’s in the fetal position crying. And your response is, hey Darkseid may have wanted this. Are you living up to your legacy and ideals you always preach? You really should be careful when you use heat vision. People can get scared off when it’s used like this. Oh that reminds me, I wanted to tell you what being a hero is like for me and how I intend to make it work in the future. Oh right. Sorry about bullying you in school.
Don’t get me wrong, all of them mean well. I’m not denying ANY of that and of course Deku knows too, but their approach emotionally is AWFUL. And think about EVERY single major arc. There’s not a single time they successfully check on Deku. No checkup. They wave him off over and over and over again. But people are worried about his next move. And for THIS approach to be taken? This isn’t a moment you try to analyze what he means to you, you have to listen for how he as an individual feels. Not pick apart his burdens.
No one has had any faith in him throughout this story and even though he always beats the odds, it never changes. He lives up to his ideals and acts with the biggest desire to help always. But when no one believes you can help even though you always do, you aren’t going to be listening to these hero ideals. Nothing here is going to change his course. Deku is so wrapped up in his burden that’s all he sees in himself now. I am OFA. What else is there to say? Nothing else matters. I help. Period. While the appreciation and all this is long overdue, it’s chosen as the worst time to do so.
But when it comes to this burden, Deku is the only one that can truly get across. Deku is exhausted, broken, starving, sleep deprived, lost a lot of weight and can’t so much as make a smile. But he’s WINNING A 19v1! This is Deku at his ABSOLUTE LOWEST and these kids have to put all their strength together to even keep REMOTE pace. If AFO showed up, even if just ONE, Deku would stand zero chance. What does that say about these kids? They CAN’T keep up. They CAN’T get involved with OFA vs AFO. If the top heroes are fodder, so too are the kids. And if he goes to UA, that’s a LOT of fodder. (And I’m 99% sure Deku knows what’s waiting there if he does return.) Deku hasn’t quite realized he is ALSO fodder in its own way but no one is putting the spotlight on Izuku Midoriya. A few got CLOSE, but they missed the marker. But at the end of the day, a fact remains. OFA has charged for 200 years and is the only true weapon to stop AFO which has charged for 200 years. This won’t be a group effort, this is I will fight the devil, you guys fight the little side demons. There won’t be another holder of OFA, and if there was, that means Deku failed.
The kids ALL mean a lot to him. He thinks nonstop about others and them making this effort is precious. But good intentions aren’t the solution. Looking at you Sato. May want to try something OTHER than blackmail.
But of course the big moment is Bakugo. This is the absolute strongest moment of his development. He acknowledges every weakness in himself. And Deku has proven to be stronger emotionally than him this ENTIRE show. He dissects his treatment of him and even tops it off by saying IZUKU. YOU are the symbol and are acting in the best of faith of your ideals which you live up to. You are unsteady and we will loosen what you carry. I’m sorry for everything. THE FACT THIS BOY KNOWS THOSE WORDS IS HUGE. This is ALL huge to his development. So what changes?…next to nothing. Something very subtle happened when Izuku collapses. (I’ll be calling him Izuku from here on out.) It’s not what he said, it’s what he didn’t. Izuku is one of kindest most loving souls and has not hesitated to offer this to even people who punch him in the face, an assassin who attacked him, and many MANY other moments. And knowing Izuku it’s 2nd nature to give it. But he doesn’t forgive him. THAT sticks out SO much.
Why? Don’t get me wrong Izuku sees how much he means this but it resolves NOTHING. This apology translates to not we have your back, but to I see you as an existing factor that is a person. When Izuku took on the name “Deku” he took Uraraka’s definition. But all people hear when he says the hero name is “worthless.” That’s why everyone is always thrown off when he says his hero name. Or they just mean it as hero when they use it. (There’s a reason so many don’t even USE his hero name. Even if it’s his nickname. It’s because the negative definition is all they see.) But for Bakugo, there was NEVER a doubt. When Izuku chose his hero name that doesn’t mean Bakugo was calling him hero. He wasn’t saying “You can do it!” Like Uraraka meant. It has been worthless this WHOLE SHOW. And honestly what he has done PRIOR to his apology is among the worst things he’s ever said. Trying to yell at him while comatose, making fun of his efforts as a symbol, and calling him crazy for being selfless to the whole class while coaching where Izuku is going to be in this mission. (There’s a nonzero chance he once caused this state.) And THIS moment all the way at the END of season 6, RIGHT on the edge of the 2nd war he calls him Izuku to give him worth. NOW. (This is why I’ve said Bakugo is rivals with OFA.) And while that’s huge, the fact that it IS huge is the saddest thing. My acknowledgement of you being an existing factor is what is needed to save you. If that sounds like that won’t save someone after everything they’ve done, you would be correct. He doesn’t collapse from relief, he doesn’t feel any safer, he’s just too exhausted to even stand. It’s true he’s not yelling so he and Izuku can have a real conversation, (Izuku said Bakugo shouting is why they can’t have real conversations in the All-Might final exam in season 2.) but this isn’t the big turnaround for making Izuku feel better, it’s just another brick. Is it plausible for Bakugo and Izuku to BECOME friends now? Yes. But BAKUGO has to accommodate. Izuku has done ALL the legwork in their relationship and they’ve gone from bully and victim to teammates with a past that work well together but don’t get along. This here isn’t even the point of friendship achievement. We’ve gone from negative numbers to zero. ZERO. A LONG road from EXTREMELY low negative numbers but this is the 1st non-toxic interaction they’ve had…and it STILL comes from OFA. This never would have happened if Izuku was like this without OFA. And Izuku knows that.
And there’s nothing that spells how little he’s been saved than when he wakes up on Shoji, he STILL says I can’t go back. And when they bring him in, he’s met with a crowd. Based on his face, he knew. He knew this had gotten to this point. He knew these people don’t want him anywhere near him. And he starts walking away himself knowing he’s not accepted as a hero, and not as anything but a target. And a target can be anywhere. And he wants it alone where people won’t scream at his existence. Izuku has no good options.
And that’s where Uraraka steps in. She has been relatively quiet this entire confrontation. She’s been accounting for what they want as a class sure, but she’s trying to look through Izuku’s eyes and see what he sees. And remember when I said only someone of a certain trust threshold can break through the absolute NIGHTMARE that is Izuku’s emotional state and identify him through his mess of carried emotions? Well. Here’s your identifier. But we can save what that means for next time.
This is the best episode in the show. I just LOVE the character development and the nuance of saying what you THINK is needed to help but the reality is it can’t. Even if you’re correct. That being said I will always ugly cry this episode because the intentions are SO good and pure regardless of ending effect.

I think you're really under-selling Bakugou here. I doubt that him sacrificing himself for Izuku, worrying about his well-being, and any of the things he thinks and does for Izuku later in the manga translates as just a begrudging "I acknowledge your existence and even then only because I'm shallow and you have OFA" and it's sad that you interpret it that way. Almost impressive that you could write such a giant analysis and miss the point of his character so deeply. But with claims like Bakugou wanting to rush to Izuku's hospital bed even if it meant risking his own death apparently being toxic in your eyes bc you think he wants to yell at his comatose body for some reason, I can't help but think you missed the mark. Bakugou does genuinely care for Izuku now and that's the thesis of his development.

    • @Kaempfdog
      @Kaempfdog 4 месяца назад +1

@@rirururu4697 @kalelcanfly what you fail to see is that there’s a zero trust factor. Yes we saw Bakugo come to the conclusion of why he bullied Deku but he confided with All-Might and All-Might ONLY. When he makes his sacrifice play, Deku didn’t see it coming AT ALL and he disregarded Bakugo’s “last words” when he was attacked by AFO because “Stop trying to win by yourself” is the same freaking tone as always. Which from Bakugo is a 100% streak of “What you are doing is wrong.” Deku doesn’t know the reasoning changed, and the play is OUT OF NOWHERE. This is the same guy who will stab him with his costume for complimenting his own quirk, scream at him for asking what his hero name is, get angry at EVERY personal trait that EXISTS in Deku. He comes back and says I DO care. We want to help. And he calls him Izuku to give him respect from his name calling like he does to Uraraka, Kirishima, and Kaminari. Which takes ONE episode of feats he sees and then he respects for THEM. Deku it took 6 seasons after ONLY acknowledging he has OFA of EVERYTHING Deku has as a person. And he MOCKED HIM over what he apologized for and acknowledged no less than 3 minutes ago.
His classmates don’t trust Bakugo to go NEAR Deku in the hospital because of what happens EVERY TIME he screams at Deku and that’s MORE BULLYING. And if he’s comatose with his family or other hospital guests even if it’s out of concern NO ONE WOULD SEE IT THAT WAY. And it would cause everyone nothing but turmoil. And his screaming I shouldn’t have gotten up before you and other such things in Bakugo tone IS toxic.
The most important thing to take from Bakugo’s arc is while he becomes a much better person, and he IS starting to care for Izuku personally and he can address that, it doesn’t matter here SPECIFICALLY. Deku is FAR from the bullying issues here because he’s worrying about AFO coming who NONE OF THEM TOGETHER can handle and WILL destroy them to get to Deku in a HEARTBEAT. He’s not safer in ANYWAY. Deku is currently being nothing BUT OFA with nothing else to himself AT ALL in his current state and Bakugo is apologizing the way he is BECAUSE Deku has OFA and has to interact with the mission. Even if it’s genuine, Bakugo had every intention of leaving Deku behind and never think about how he made his life hell again without Deku ascending.
Bakugo has to work to fix their relationship if he wants to be friends. Their air isn’t cleared because Izuku doesn’t just forgive him. And when Bakugo calls him Izuku AGAIN he slips up and has to stop himself from calling him Deku BECAUSE acknowledging the respect he gave him was so difficult. THAT’S how bad their relationship has been. And BECAUSE Izuku says call me Deku if that’s hard, he’s telling Bakugo don’t give me respect if it’s THAT hard to give me it.
I’m not underselling Bakugo’s care for Izuku. He cares and truly does. And his apology shows the POSSIBILITY for them to recover. But it’s HIS work now because Izuku has BROKEN himself trying to accommodate and understand Bakugo and Bakugo in turn did NOTHING but work for All-Might’s sake as his ONLY accommodation. And it’s going to take a LOT more than an apology to get over a DECADE OF BULLYING. Developing Bakugo is WILDLY different than Bakugo and Deku’s growing relationship. It isn’t bully/victim to rivals to besties. Their dynamic doesn’t have a SEMBLANCE in common with their friends. Bakugo and Kirishima watch each others back and jump in to help each other and talk all the time. Deku and Iida and Uraraka are always checking on each other. This is Bakugo’s 1st genuine checkup on Izuku and THIS is what it took to get here. So yeah, I do standby my Bakugo criticism.
