As a young girl during the tragic catastrophe known as WW1 her ancestral home was opened to nurse wounded soldiers and she helped attend to these badly injured Tommies while her own family was fighting and dying in the war. Only countries with an unbroken historical tradition stretching over many centuries are able to achieve this kind of public dignity and splendour. As a German, I am ashamed that we have nothing like it, having deliberately denounced our whole history as only a prelude to the "Third Reich" and thus cut off all links to everything else. Let me give you an example of how ridiculous our attempts to avoid any sort of grandeur get: When Queen Elizabeth II visited Berlin a few years ago, she, Prince Philip and the German President went on a boat trip on the river Spree - they used some kind of cockleshell whose seats did not even have back rests...
@Kate Carney The Germans were not unified until 1870/1871, and even after that the union was incomplete because the Austrians could not be expected to give up their empire (one can even argue that it was as late as Hitler's reign that all the people considered back then to be Germans were finally united in one state). Anyway, saying that the establishment of the German nation state in 1870/1871 "ultimately" led to World War I and the Nazi regime is oversimplifying things, to say the least. World War I had many causes, and its outbreak depended on much more insignificant parameters than the sheer existence of the German Empire. Similarly, the Nazis' rise to power was not made possible by World War I as such, but by the fact that Germany had lost this war, the outcome of which also had nothing to do with what Germany as a state was back then. Victory of this oh-so-doomed and sinister Germany was on the cards at multiple junctions from 1914 to 1918, and victory (or at least a stalemate) it would have been if just a few major strategic decisions had been otherwise (unlike in World War II, Germany had suffered no catastrophic, crucial defeats until the very end when the war was decided on the western front). So before "wiping clean" history, one should remember that it could have been very different very easily and that where we now claim to see a clear succession of causal events, there were mostly just ambiguities and accidents which do not allow for definite moral verdicts. As for Merkel: say what you will about her, her legacy, however, will certainly not be a prouder Germany, but one more divided than ever.
Alexander Lauer, as a Brit who lived in Germany throughout the 1980s I have to say that, whilst I appreciate your compliment on the British way of doing ceremony, you should not be so harsh on your own country. Many (non-Nazi) aspects of German culture are truly wonderful and are greatly appreciated around the world, as is the superb quality of German engineering re tools and machines. I am now living in Hanoi, Vietnam, and the annual German Oktoberfest here, sponsored by the German Business Association, is an amazing experience and a highlight of the year.
You should be proud of the astonishing contribution the German peoples have made to the world. Never mind the art, culture and music, The tribes who left Germany to settle in the British Archipelago brought with them the principles of tribal law which became Common Law, the greatest legacy the English gave to the world because from that springs the roots of the individual freedom that underpins Western civilisation. And before anyone starts, I am a Scot and even I recognise that. Germany was, like many nations before and since, captured by gangsters and demagogues and the tragedy of Germany is that those innocents who perished during the excision of those gangsters can never be mourned without the association to the Third Reich. But even the appalling crimes of the 3rd Reich do not change the immense contribution to world history and culture the German peoples have made.

She was much beloved by the soldiers. One wrote " may she be drawn, quartered and hung: drawn in the finest coach, quartered in a magnificent home and may the finest diamonds be hung upon her".
I salute such distinguished leaders who commit their entire lives to improve lives of their people.

Absolutely breathtaking! Rest in peace Queen Mother! And all those who came before and after! Queen Elizabeth ll will have and unimaginable send off unlike any other before I believe! May she rest in peace with her loved ones!
Me, my 2009 Woody, my sister, Mummy and Woody.EXE did the best send off for Queen Elizabeth II with about almost 8 million mourners watching all 5 of us on as St Julian’s got extremely crowded that we had to get security in St Julian’s for the very first time. @@bigbluehighlander2338 The bagpipes are claimed by many country's long before they got to Scotland Only this modern version stemming from the clans and British Army Highland Regiments throws Scotland as the nation of the bagpipes as this was born out of the British Empire and to somewhat romantical Hollywood films.

@@alexanderlauer4565
Brilliantly said!
That was my last performance as a piper in the ScotsDG pipes and drums.
Could you tell what the piece of music is called please? Is that the same as was played at HM Queen Elizabeth’s funeral today? I think it’s just incredible and would love to know what it is called. Thank you.

Off in the stilly night or the battles o'er are the most common , but the flowers o the forest are a traditional tune , enjoy all as your ancestors died to preserve them .
I’ll say one thing, these folks know how to do a funeral, very respectful!
Woody.EXE knows how to do royal tributes and he even paid tribute to the war dead 4 months ago because I stepped down in November from it. I still attended Remembrance Sunday as Wales’s future Queen and Queen of Woody.EXE. Can’t wait for this year’s remembrance
Beautiful & powerful.
The pipes are wonderful and very fitting for her.

So glorious to heard those Pipes
I remember Woody.EXE playing them for the Queen and mourners from the crowd said on the first anniversary of th funeral that the whole of my hometown St Julian’s Wales could hear it coming from my house. I think Woody.EXE wanted it loud enough for his people to hear him as me, my 2009 Woody, my sister and Mummy were marching downstairs behind him to watch Elizabeth II’s funeral live that tragic Monday. I’ve never seen the whole of Wales in a standstill just to watch all 5 of us pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth. I’ll never see anything like it during mine and Woody.EXE’s reign again until the funeral of King Charles

I was going through my Mobilisation routine in HMS Nelson, the Naval Base in Portsmouth just a day or so after the QM died. The Royal Marines Band were out practicing for the Funeral every day. Great morale booster to hear the Death March and similar tunes every day before departing to Oman.
I am not sure if this is a joke or not. Death March before being sent off into combat?
The day after Queen Elizabeth died; me, my 2009 Woody, my sister, Mummy and Woody.EXE we’re practicing our funeral procession and then slept out on the landing all night all 5 of us did, we did our final rehearsal at 3:25am and the whole of St Julian’s could hear Woody.EXE’s bagpipes which I wasn’t expecting. So the crowds of st Julian’s started gathering at 4am whilst all 5 of us did our final rehearsal and it was on live
I’ve never seen anything like it when an entire crowd of mourners go out just for the 5 of us and then they reunited with us again at Remembrance Sunday on November 13th. I wish Mummy attended this day but she watched us live instead from home. Apparently she told me that Woody.EXE made her cry again when playing the bagpipes to Remembrance Sunday.
