As someone who drafts nearly as much as y’all do, and who absolutely loves digging into a format, this has easily been the most insightful and thought provoking episode of LR that I’ve listened to. I frequently found my comfort zone in finding a mono color and sticking decently close to it in pack 1 with mostly strong uncommons or bombs of other colors getting my attention. The win %s for opting to take the ‘best’ card for the first 8~ packs is pretty mind boggling. I look forward to trying this new approach and seeing where it takes me. Thanks Marshall and Sierkovitz for an absolutely amazing episode!
Sometimes, by cutting out a color HARD early in pack 1, you scare off everyone to your left. This leads to them passing good cards of THAT color in pack 2, freeing you up to take your pick. Pros and cons. I'm not actually sure which has the higher win rate in general, but this strategy can be most effective in sets with clear color hierarchies like BFZ and THB.
@ very true, yeah there are so many ways to look at and evaluate the different drafting styles. And while I'm overall satisfied with the level of success I've had with my method, I'm excited to try opening my mind up a bit and trying alternative methods and seeing the results!
@@reedzimmerman2234 Right. I think that I'm an average drafter, better deck-builder, and average player. So looking for ways to improve in the draft can avoid train wrecks and half-baked ideas.
People have been bringing this up for months. It's starting to get really irritating that he's ignoring everyone when he's just obviously wrong about this.
I have come and gone from magic over the last decade but it is lovely to get caught back up to speed to LR. My first stop whenever I'm coming back to the game.
TIL that 17lands lets you do replays. That will push me to finally play on the computer more, so I can gain access to that. Replays are literally the feature I miss most from MTGO.
For me the proove it archetype is usually red blue spells, but in foundations I thought it was black white life gain. Traditionally it's hard to get both the triggers and the pay offs, but it came together pretty consistently in foundations for me
Leyline Axe shade :). Review basically said, well, it's not Embercleave, so it's unplayable. I had that card in pre-release, played it, and it was awesome.
My problem with involuntary employment is that the most common sac outlet, (IMO) other than sticking a hungry ghoul, is eaten alive. Except for the mana you paid for employment + sac to eaten alive, you could have just cast the 5 mana cost of eaten alive without the sac and gone 1 for 1
It is not even close to the same, employment makes a treasure and doesn't require double black. When you employment into eaten alive you basically get two eaten alives for 4 mana with easier colour requirements, and sometimes even a free attack or a dies trigger as well.
I think you're heavily underestimating the value of damage though in this equation. When you steal something you almost always get a free attack in because they don't want to block (and if they do, fantastic! you just got a two-for-one without even using your eaten alive), so it probably means 3-4+ extra damage (often more because you're removing a blocker as well as adding their creatures 3-4 power) and killing two of their best things for 4 mana.
Always looking forward to the Sierkovitz episodes :)

Please don't skip the foils. They're part of play boosters online and in paper

This literally doesn't matter to me at all. Just to weigh in and provide a different take

Same, I just got back and I'm choosing to stay only draft this time as it is the best format
Liked and commented to boost the impressions for Sierko's job search
Oh shit, legends unite!

Knew I liked this guy for a reason, cooking tips. That salad sounds like nearly all my favourite things all in one place
Finally recognition!

Ben Stark's, Drafting the Hard Way covers most of the points looked at here.
When they are talking about percentages during the crack a pack is that improvement when drawn?
How did we get 6 red cards in pack 1?
The collation of play boosters is ridiculous sometimes

Once upon a galaxy is a pretty fun gane to just change things up.
