I bought a long atm 10 years ago with no intention of starting a business. My husband had just passed away and I thought it would be fun and fill my time to quilt for my and my friends. Long story short I do nothing but edge to edge and paid for the $38000 I spent on the ma hind in about 2-1/2 years. It’s a great business
Traditional Trick-or- Treating. I love seeing the kids all dressed up and parents taking time to enjoy spending time with them. This also allows the Senior Citizens that are home bound to see all the costumes.
About a week ago I received my half yard bundle of Laguna Sunrise, and shortly my jelly roll will be arriving. As beautiful as the fabric is in photos, nothing beats holding it in your hands, and getting your first good look at it. All the pretty little details. I must say the purples are gorgeous❣ Great job! Can’t wait to see all the great videos you'll take at Quilt Market. Have fun, travel safe.
Thanks! Another great podcast and such good ideas! Billy I have heard that practicing on donation quilts for a quilt guild is a great place to start before doing customer quilts
I’m going to the Houston quilt festival for the first time with a group of girlfriends - so excited! That would be great for Isabelle & Billy to start doing longarm quilting - it would be “all in the family” so fun.
Hi Billy...the other way to get exposure in the beginning and to get practice as you're starting out is to volunteer to quilt some charity quilts for a guild. That way people will see your work. I experimented with a long arm business many years ago but decided I wanted to keep all my quilting as a hobby. I loved being able to quilt over a dozen charity quilts in the beginning. No pressure as they go to charity and your services will be appreciated. A lot faster too than having to make all those quilts to then practice on. There are also fabrics that are called "cheater quilt tops" that you can practice on and gift to charity too. Good luck to you and Isabella. Remember that it's a tax write off too if you give it a go as a business whether you then change your mind or not. My 14 foot long arm saves me a lot of money on my own quilts and gives me pleasure. Please Chelsi always chime in. You and your mom are so much fun to listen to and an inspiration. xx Karen
I wanted to tell Billy and wife that many LA start by doing some charity quilts just to get the feel for it (the first few) as charities are just simply grateful to get the quilt finished. My twin sis was at Quilt Market and got home last night. Someday I'll fly over and go with her to quilt market. I'm going to have to look up Rasberry Summer. Sounds pretty. I knew our store has purchased Strawberry Lemonade and I want to say that you are giving too much credit for the success of that line to someone else. I believe fully it is because of this podcast - so give yourselves credit for making the exposure on line and singular to your 100K+ viewers.
Getting involved with local quilt guilds is a good way to get the word out about a longarm business. You can also offer to quilt some charity quilts for the guild for them to see your work.
From Indianapolis area...I really started watching the Colts because of Peyton, too, I started watching him when he played for University of Tennessee...I grew up in Tennessee so was so happy when he went to the Colts.
The longarm league is a group of longarmers from all over the USa… and Canada not only do they have list of longarm but they provide training on how to set up a business how to choose a Long Arm etc. etc.
I’d just like to say “thank you “ for reprinting Strawberry Lemonade line. I’ve been able to find everything I wanted online. Unfortunately my local quilt shop doesn’t have it, but it’s available lots of other retailers online. I’m so excited and I now have to decide which pattern I want to use 😍
Long time Colts fan from Indiana here. I was a Baltimore Colts fan before they moved to Indianapolis. They sure make it difficult to be a fan right now but I’m loyal to the end. My daughter and grandchildren live in San Antonio and our youngest grandson asked us to come to Texas and go to the Colts/Texans game for his birthday several years ago. It was such a great trip. It was a Colts win by the way.
I also love the quilting on the Magnola quilt. So beautiful. Great job on both quilts Ann. Lori I love your quilt also. Lori, I also tookSherri's class and Ioved her class also it was wonderful and your quilt is wonderful.
Love watching the 3 of you each week. Very inspiring! Tip for Chelsie traveling with quilts…..Space Saver bags are perfect. I traveled to Germany with 4 lap size quilts and one king size all with pillowcases (because I make a matching pillowcase or two with each quilt gift) and they all fit in one small carry on suitcase comfortably. I thought when I got them out they’d be all wrinkled and they weren’t! Good luck and have fun. This is the year we chose not to go to festival and plan several retreats instead.
My husband & I went to Quilt Festival 6 years ago to try out all the different longarms & bought the one I liked best. I didn’t do it to start a business, but I quilt my quilts & charity quilts! It is tons of fun & there is definitely a learning curve, but it is a wonderful business as well if you want to start a business.
I’ve had to change long armers a couple times. I usually take a family member quilt the first time to see how their work looks. I make quilts for the public so I need the work to be top notch
Just got my Laguna Sunrise- guys, it’s so so pretty! Trying to decide how to use it and NOT hoard 😬😁 I might have to do the Brightly Sampler, cause yeah, I have the book too 😁❤️
I would LOVE to have a chance to longarm quilt for both of you. A dream come true! I’ve been longarm quilting since 2017. I do edge to edge and custom quilting. Quilting is my passion and I’ve put tons and tons of work into learning the skills needed.
Depending on the shape, those are usually a “dog clip” - like a dog leash”, or a lobster clip - with a pincer or claw-like action when opened and closed.
Yaa Billy. Go Colts❤. Not only was Peyton a great football player but also did so much for Indianapolis with his Children’s hospital and other areas. I live just 20 minutes away from Indianapolis and also the speedway track. You should come for the race sometime it is a special day and the whole month of May for this area.
Check out the Bernina Q series. It has a built in stitch regulator which solves the one big issue that newbies have problems with long arming - keeping your stitches consistent. Also, check out Amanda Murphy (Bernina expert) if she is there and her rulers. Game changer for free motion.
No need to justify why you are fans of your teams. But thank you for the explanation. My husband was born and raised in Los Angeles. Growing up when he watched football all that he could see were the Miami Dolphins games. So, there you go! 😉 Viva Los Dodgers!!🤗
This was excellent video/pod cast. Thank you for the topic on long arming. I would really love to start long arming and just do know how to where to go observe talk to and try out the machines. How big of a machine should o get or best one for trying out, edge to edge or free motion. What machine is the best for accomplishing both I will need to see if the is an quilt market/ festival on the Chicago area. .

Yes you should absolutely buy a longarm machine and get in the business for the future!!!

Billy, Chelsie and Sherrii, You always start my day off with a smile. Thank you for all you share with us!❤
I would love for the episode where you come back from quilt market be longer than usual. Maybe an hour or hour and a half ❤
I would love that too. I like to have it on while sewing or working around the house.

I love my Juki Myabi with QCT! Really need to check it out...very reasonable.

Longarm quilting pricing around my area is 2 to 2.5 cents per inch. That is for allover design.
Good morning all!! So happy to see you.❤
Have a great time, especially Billy & wife!

Very informative session today. Thanks.
Thank you for all you do
I am hoping to get to Houston and the quilt festival this year. Would love to run into you all!
Love my Handi quilter with prosticher. They have great training and customer service.

Yea Billy. Go Colts. We had season tickets to the games for years.

Billy, I live west of Indianapolis. Go Colts!
I love the churn dash quilt behind Chelsey. What is the name of the pattern and where can I find it?
Lobster claw if it's what I think it is on the merch. It's a jewelry term.
Go Colts…..from southern Indiana!
Are there events like this for everyday quilters?
I would offer to quilt free quilts for quilt shop and hang it in their shop and hand out your cards. Good idea for local customers.
Oh yeah go Colts!

Indiana here go colts!!!
Will you be at Quilt Con in Phoenix next year?
Yea New Hampshire made it to show. Have you all ever been here before?
Clip = carabiner? Like for climbers, only small. Can’t see it because you don’t zoom on things (wish you did😂).
What is the quilt behind Chelsi on the top?
What happened to Rosie of Rosie’s quilt company?
And when you find a long arm quilter that you like, you don't leave. The only problem I have with mine, she has limited patagrams
I bought 4 pentagrams I liked for my long arm-quilter friend😀
It’s called a lobster claw clasp
Zipper pull...lol
Billy should hook up with Lisa Bongeanand her two sons from Primitive Gatherings. They sell Bernina long arms.
lobster claw?
