- Growing up as fan of ANTM, and now as a professional photographer, I wanted to re-visit some of the photoshoots the internet thinks are the worst from the America's Next Top Model series.

Who the hell edited the images lmfaooooo most of the time the photo was just edited horrendously that got the models eliminated XDDDD
I feel like at least some of the bad photos are intentional, so they can choose who wins to some extent.
She made some good points in the video where there were clearly wayyyyy shittier images than the one that actually got eliminated so idk its all a set up and they do whatever to make sure their picked winner wins
I agree with her Nicole's photo is awful I did not realize at the time but now I do she is crossing her legs like she really wants to pee.

Fabio is a model that is on so many romance novels. he's like THE romance novel model. that's why they chose him for the shoot bc it's his specialty.
Fabio is a relic from the eighties.
@Mia Smith i know, it makes me wonder if he was either uncomfortable for some reason not being shared with us, or if he was just phoning it in for the paycheck (which if that's the case is not at all fair to the girls).
I am not familiar enough with his work to say if this is characteristic of him or not. I only really know that he is famous for his long silky hair and for being on every cover of every romance novel for 30+ years.
@@torfinnzempel6123 it was honestly probably the fact of a 40-sometjing year old man posing with women in their 20s. He probably couldn't connect with them on very many levels.
@@torfinnzempel6123 he was extremely uncomfortable with the photoshoot because of the age difference and the girls' inexperience. he tried to help guide them, but then you have jay and the other staff telling the girls what to do and making it even more uncomfortable.

Fabio has been a model for romance novels for ever. The poses are supposed to wrap around his character not around the girls character. So their supposed to accentuate but standout simultaneously.

The Best That cycle
Brooke got eliminated because it was the same day as her graduation. Simply for the drama
Plus, she didn't look like a model.

I always wondered how many times the "best photo" that the judges would present at panel wouldn't actually be everyone's best photo and whether they would purposely avoid someone's best photo in order to get them eliminated. You know, like to push the show's narrative. Like sometimes they would show someone's best photo and I'd be like "damn, I know I saw them do better poses than that during the actual shoot" lol
They pulled an interesting trick with Tatiana in cycle 14 - her portfolio was actually quite good, but she was eliminated early, because apparently her films were weak and "there's always just these 1-2 good pictures in the photoshoot". This is kind of an argument you can do nothing about.
Listen to mr Jay and miss jay(in the first episodes) of Jay's chats on youtube he talks about how he would give his top 5 or 10 and sometimes they wouldnt choose the one he thought was best
@@traerichard Yessss I remember hearing that in one of them!! I remember not being surprised at all. Those panels always felt so strange, between them clearly not picking a model's best photo and then even sometimes glorifying really boring photos.
They did do that. It was highlighted earlier this year

@@Partycitybaex Yes!! In the one that got eliminated, "Don't Leave Me," she was critiquing that Fabio was walking up the stairs, like it was a prom photo. Well, yeah. He's leaving her. They probably wanted her to look more like she was grabbing for him to keep him there. I didn't see the episode, but that's what I'm imagining.

Jesus Christ. I can't watch this. Not even because of the photos, but because of the editing. As someone who spends a lot of time with Photoshop, this is absolutely horrendous

One thing I've noticed with ANTM is that Tyra's a better photographer than most photographers they ever had on the show lol.

I think her photos stand out because the whole concept is usually very simple, instead of this type of things. For me the issue it’s the concept of the photoshoots rather than the photographer
She also good at at directing the models.
Paula Mugabi models know how hard it is to have a photographer who doesn’t give them any direction
Her photos are good cuz she tells them what she wants. They expect these girls to just do 5000 different poses with no real direction and get a good photo. Every time Tyra takes pictures she moves them where she wants. Tells them where to angle their faces etc. Some photographers are lazy and expect the model to just POOF and give them what they want.

The best part of the fashion victim photo shoot was that they were photographed on a treadmill.
And they didn't know what or whom they were running from because they were in front of a green screen lol. Finding out that they were running from Miss J was funny.

Back when I watched this show, I remember thinking that the eliminations and especially the winners sometimes just didn't make any sense. Like the season finale of cycle 5 when Nicki had a literal meltdown on the set of the commercial but she still somehow beat Nik, who did it perfectly. Sure, Nicki's billboard was better, but not THAT much better.

Photoshoot 1: That was Miss J as a Fashion Police Witch and they were running on a treadmill.
Photoshoot 2: The models were suspended in a harness and wires.
Photoshoot 3: Fabio is a male model famous for romance novel covers which they were modeling.
Fabio has perfected his .. Fabio'ness .. I know who he is and i haven't even touched a "Fabio-book" irl.. but yeah I guess I'm that old ..

But I think the saying “looking for Fabio” resonates with almost everyone. I didn’t know he was a real person but I knew that Fabio meant “the perfect man” or Prince Charming.
I think that my favourite pic from antm is that one in which allison is a bird on a nest. It was years ago but that's literally the only pic I can remember from the show
The only pics I remember are from the photoshoot Tyra did I think it was season 7. It was in black and white and the girls had scary eyes, simple but loved it.
I remember a few but Allison's photos always were so memorable. She got robbed so much
Awww I remember that photoshoot. Allison was my fav from that season for sure. I wish she had won. Found her much more relatable then the winner of that season.

You should recreate their sessions and just amp them up! Like do the super heroes and show them up girl! You got this!
What bothered me (as a newbie in professional photography) about a lot of the sessions they did on ANTM (at least in early seasons) is how little the photographer actually moved. The camera stays static and barely even touches finding good angels and completely relied on them to pose and that can only begin to make a photograph and very often fails at finding a good one. There was probably a lot of potential wasted. 🤷🏻♀️

Depending on the shoots, if they were studio setups, you don't move very much because you're lighting is set up for a few angles, it's not the same as what is done today on the fly. Additionally, in the beginning, it's likely that some of the shoots were on film (though, with the photoshop stuff, I can't be sure of that).
@@jd-no7rw I do get that, but at the time this aired, these people were supposed to be at the top of their field. Having people move lighting equipment inside a studio should be small potatoes, right? They often ended up criticizing models harshly for something that was not their fault or could have been easily prevented by a knowledgeable professional. It came off badly.
@@carissashley I'm not sure how different a high fashion shoot would be, but there is specific lighting in studio portraiture, and if the photographer has a look in mind, they aren't going to keep moving around, studio lighting can be heavy, and expensive. I'm sure it's changed a lot over the years, but when I was learning photography, you set up your lighting before the subject even was in the studio. It's a lot different now.

Am I the only one bothered by Tyra name on everything? I know she’s the host but she doesn’t have to be the center of attention always
One thing that's frustrating about ANTM is that we don't actually get to see objectively what's the best photos from each model.... this is a reality show and past contestants have confirmed how rigged the show is in order to get certain reactions and outcomes from the models. After seeing clips from shoots and then seeing the images actually chosen for each model I have a hard time believing "the best image" from each model is actually what we end up seeing. Also I think it's kind of disingenuous to judge a model's stance in the image versus just the elements the photographer had power over. Some girl's photos had similar poses chosen as their "best images" but again, that's pretty subjective and the models are at the mercy of a reality show to pick what's "best"... not good odds for objective selections.
That being said, ANTM photoshoots have a long history of very cringey art direction and questionable level of quality and taste in terms of photographers. Some of the cycle's art directors and photographers definitely "grew up" with the progression of the show.

I think it's really interesting to go back now and remember how many decisions were based on context? Like the whole Fabio thing was them doing 80-90's Romance Novel Covers, and Tyra had created these whole story plots (hence the titles) that the girls were supposed to be portraying. So, simultaneously hilarious and a complete mess watching in retrospect.
I really love watching these reactions from the perspective of a photographer though-- listening to Tyra and the judges, you never really got an understanding about what was good or bad about the photo, just the model, and as an amateur photographer now, it's a lot more fun to hear why the shoots worked so well. Can't wait to watch some more! Keep up the good work!
13:17, honestly the male model didn't impress me. His eye location was so awkward in most photos .... like why is he staring off in those directions ?

Wild to watch this after seeing some of her later ANTM reviews. It's clear that she became kinder with her critiques because the judges were already roasting the girls so hard.
Brooke got eliminated for two reasons: #1 She was uncomfortable on the photo shoot because she was only 18 at the time and felt really uncomfortable with Fabio who was in his forties. #2 The photo shoot took place around the same time as her high school graduation which she missed because of being on the show. When she cried about missing it at panel, they told her she wasn't serious enough about the show. Really icky situation with a teenager 🤢

Personally I would have been more interested in your opinion on the photographs, lighting and editing rather than so much about posing. 🤔
The posing is an important part of a photograph composition, that's why I think she talked about it a lot idk
React to the "spin-off" versions of ANTM.... aka Australia or UK.... they are WAY LESS cartoony and more realistic!
Fabio was old enough to be some of theses ladies father.
Been rewatching old seasons of ANTM and the romance novel shoot has been one ive been looking forward to seeing again, but looking at the pictures out of context makes it so obvious that I just loved that shoot because of the stories they told to explain the plots of the fake novels and not because of the actual pictures.
You should redo these photos! Find like 5 weird themes and do your own version! It would be so great

I think the worst photoshoots are the multiple times they did straight up did blackface. 🤦🏻♀️ See cycle 4 and 13.
The girl that lost the "super hero" shoot was photoshopped in on a stupid angle. If they had of made he straight it would have been fine. Her face was great.
This makes me feel better about my skills as a photographer like a LITtLe.
I get the impression you don't get the concept of romance novel right - they're not romantic, they're cheap ancestors of fifty shades - innocent virgin meets older dude, will-they,won't-they happened, and at the end, after he popped her cherry, they declare their eternal, undying love to the world and themselves - the end - and for that, these pictures are perfect
There's a lot of heaving bosoms and quivering body parts as well.

Concept and photo shoot 1 was just all around horrible.
Concept and photo shoot 2 was silly, in poor taste, with bad styling, and with amateur, old-fashioned editing.
Concept 3 was not bad, just campy. The look is a illustration and cover of a cheap romance novel you see at CVS. Romance, melodrama, lust. The results of the photo shoot were bad though, I think because the lighting, composition, and model’s performance. How can you not know Fabio?! He is the OG and veteran of these!
Well now we all know we’re probably qualified to be a photographer for ANTM

Its funny because the photo-shopping that were done in all these pictures or for most are prettier bad and Fabio is actually an actor👍. Also I'm inspired by channels like these because it gives me the confident to actually showcase my work on You Tube without worrying about if its not great yet.😅

As a graphic designer I‘ve been judging the photos of Germany‘s next topmodel all the time... But the ANTM ones are even worse ugh. The setting and the editing 🤢

They don’t always get eliminated because of the photos!! Sometimes girls are saved/eliminated over other girls due to other elements of the competition.
All those novel ones are just generic wattpad romance covers
(first 2 "sets") I'm just a amateur/hobby-photographer and i wouldnt post most of these on my insta or my website if they were mine xD
