    Hi, your videos are very helpful as guidance, however truenas and jellyfin and plex have updated again and now much of what you show has changed. The biggest issues is retrieving the films and tv shows from my nas media file which is there but appears as an outlined folder and nothing is accessed..... at the point where the nas is just gonna be a nas as things change too quickly to learn and keep up as most vides are out of date every 2-3 months. Please help if you can :)

    I had Plex working on my truenas scale server. worked great. Had a MB failure - now I am on Dragonfish-24.04.1.1 and loaded plex Version:
    1.40.3.8555 . I tried to set up from 1st video then go to second video - tried Many times. - tried to follow latest video to install - Many times. not sure if it will set up using either - Any pointers - Thanks

    Aha, so it was SMB issue :)
    Would you mind making a fresh update of this as SMB seems to be the norm and most people start by installing truenas and then a storage pool (which i have) and then we head to jellyfin. Issue is in all videos most of which are already out of date, they show setting up applications and even you set SMB in dataset but it does not make sense :/
    So please be the first youtuber to make a fresh Jellyfin fresh install with no other apps stalled so we are all on the same page. Thank you for the millienth time :)

    Update...so JellyFin DOES indeed work, but I cant get any Folder art. At all. it brings in the metadata and the actors images, but no folder or Season art. It's so very frustrating.

    Have you updated to 24.04.1 yet? That is what I am on and I guess people are having issues with apps in the new version. I followed your tutorial but cant get it to share the SMB dataset in plex. I just set up my server yesterday so its fresh, am I missing some setting to get the app to work properly?

    I create a pool and a share, I go through the user permission steps, I install Plex and then add a new SMB share in the Plex config. When I open the Plex Web portal and go to Movies there's no option for me to add my own movies to Plex. I've been followed this video multiple times but there's something I'm not understanding. Does anyone have any suggestion or things I can check? I'm able to browse the SMB share from a windows machine and when I open a shell to Plex I'm able to see the SMB share mounted. I'm assuming it's a user perms issues but I'm stuck.

      When you're adding the SMB it needs to be the name you made it for shares.
      So for example, the dataset in the video is called media, and it's at /mnt/Galaxy/media, but it's assigned as Plex under the Shares. So in the Plex SMB setup, you need to mount the SMB, not the dataset, so you mount your server as truenas.local (or whatever your server is called), and for the SMB share you mount Plex (or whatever your SMB share is called that shows up on Windows), then you allocate the Share as a directory within Plex Pod as /SMB or whatever you want to call it, I use caps as the entire Plex Pod is done in lower case so it's just easier to find when you're adding the media.
      Then in Plex you gotta select the /SMB directory, if that's not showing up, then something is wrong in the Plex Pod config and there's something not typed correctly (but usually if it's not working then it will just get stuck on deploying so the fact that you're in probably means that you did it right), and from there you should access the SMB like it's just a normal share.
      Basically there are three things you need to do, have the server name correct, the share name correct, the mount name easy to find, and that's it.
      Server: truenas.local
      Share: Plex
      Mount: /SMB
      Hopefully you're able to get this working, it's kind of picky, like if you put \SMB or SMB instead of /SMB, it won't work, it needs to start with a forward slash, same with the server. If you set it as TrueNAS.local, it's not going to work, needs to be exactly as the server shows for truenas.local, no caps (unless yours has caps in the name). The Share also can't have a forward slash, it needs the only be the name of the share and nothing else, like /Plex or plex won't work, needs to only be Plex exactly as it's written for your share.
      The username and password could also be incorrect, you could just try typing those again so it's the same username and password you use to access the SMB on windows, cause if the username or password is typed wrong, it won't mount the SMB in the Plex Pod.

    so, if I understand correct we have to install old scale, install plex there then upgrade to 24.04 scale and do all this manupulations to make it work on the new sclae version. Why you didn't install plex from scratch on the new 24.04?

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  4 месяца назад +1

      No no, that was how I had it before and why it was still working for me because I originally installed it on 22. For this video I show how to set it up if you did a clean install with 23 or 24 using the new SMB access when installing the apps for Plex or Jellyfin.
      The part where I show how to revert the settings for the dataset only applies to people who followed my original guide for TrueNAS 22. If you’re on 23 or 24 you just skip that part because it doesn’t apply. That was why I reverted it, to show that the previous changes on 22 didn’t need to be done for this to work

    I got it installed without issue and can see its web interface from all devices but the Jellyfin app on neither our Smart TV nor on my Android mobile can connect to it. Noticed the field "Published Server URL" in your video and in my own installation, but if you mentioned what to do with this: I missed it. Will there be a part _three_...on how to connect from TV or android app?

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  4 месяца назад

      I’m still not skilled enough to know how to use Jellyfin as my daily media centre, for me the Android app was working fine on wifi, but for mobile data you would have to have the port that Jellyfin uses forwarded in your router. And because every router is different, you gotta figure out where it is and how to set it up based on each device so there no way to give a guide that would suit for all devices as every single one is different and some of them can’t even do it.
      As for a smart TV not working, if you’re using dual and wifi, so, separate 2.4GHz and 5Ghz channels, it could just be an issue with one of them not being able to connect locally. I run all of my devices over Ethernet and only my phone and laptop use wifi which I have them unified as a single network that auto switches between 2.4 or 5GHz based on how far away I am from the router so I didn’t experience any issues like that.
      When trying to access it from outside the house, I’m completely lost cause Jellyfin doesn’t use online accounts the same way Plex does and I still haven’t figured it out or figured out a way to share my library with friends so I’m still using Plex as my daily

    What is the difference between the versions? Does SMB improve performance?

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  4 месяца назад +1

      The difference between the versions is that it wasn't "possible" on the older version because some apps could be broken if you use SMB to access data on them like NextCloud while it's syncing, so the previous video using TrueNAS 22 was a workaround to force it to work, but now since TrueNAS 23, they removed the ability to do that workaround because if used incorrectly can break stuff, and they added a safer way to add SMB directly within the App setup so only apps that can safely use SMB to their files have access.
      SMB also just gives you access to the share so it's easier to drag and drop new media and you don't have to use an FTP client or anything. The same would apply for NFS but since Windows is the most popular OS out there, everyone just defaults to SMB since it works on every OS. It just kind of became the default that everyone uses since it's just automatically setup when you connect to a network.

    When i get to the part where you install jellyfin it stays stuck at deploying. Any ideas?

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  4 месяца назад

      SMB settings might not be correct, it won't deploy if the SMB can't be setup properly. Check to make sure the server name is typed case sensitive, so TrueNAS.local won't work, needs to be exactly as written like mine being truenas.local, you can also check the mount path, needs to start with a forward slash, so for this video it's /SMB, but if you use SMB or \SMB, it's not going to work, as well as the Share path, needs to have the Share name only with no slash, so if you have /plex /Plex or \Plex, it's not going to work, needs the be only the share name exactly as written, which in this video is Plex, again plex all lowercase would not work.
      You can also check your username and password to make sure those are the same as the one you use to access the SMB on Windows, Linux, or macOS. Generally the username and password will still allow Plex to start up even if it's wrong, you just can't access the SMB, but for it not deploying at all usually means there's something wrong with the SMB settings itself.

    • @frozennorthproductions
      @frozennorthproductions  4 месяца назад +1

      If I had a server specifically for testing and making videos and junk, I would, but basically you just gotta go through both videos to figure it out otherwise I would have to delete the entire thing on my end, which would end up resetting all of my plex watch history and everything after I set the whole thing back up.
      Basically, if you watch the first video, all you need to do is setup the pool, a dataset, and you're done, you don't have to change permissions or anything or disable host path safety check, then go to this video, and follow along from the point where I'm setting up Plex and everything is the same from that point forward using the SMB settings instead of the host path settings from the previous video.

    I mean it's nice and all having the apps integrated into the web GUI and showing CPU / RAM / Network and Updates, but man it's a lot of hoops to jump through. I found it easier to just set up a docker sandbox with jailmaker, and then get acess to all the docker tools i'm familar with like Docker Compose, and a bit of dockge and portainer.
