  • Every puppy owner who has put effort into puppy crate training looks forward to the day when their puppy can be trusted enough to be left out of their crate. The crate is a great way to keep your puppy safe and comfortable and to make sure they're only getting good information. It's always enjoyable when you don't have to rely on your puppy's crate to make sure they're safe though. In this video, we'll talk about the important checklist you need to go through before choosing to test your puppy's ability to be left out of their crate unsupervised.

I started crate training my pitbull puppy at 10weeks old..He's now 7 months and does great out of his crate. I do however crate him when I'm at work, leave for errands and at bedtime.

Thanks for the video! I’m baby stepping this now for my puppy she is a 7 month old border collie and definitely a chewer and likes to explore and pester our older dog. I fully expect the crate to be in use atleast for one year or longer for safety. My adult dog loved the crate but earned his freedom quick as he wasn’t destructive or ingesting things he should not. Little puppy on the other hand acts like a puppy haha Thanks for the tips. Simplest thing is leaving the door open and I haven’t been doing that. We use place often as well as the crate to put on the brakes. Other than that this pup doesn’t stop, always trying to do something even after good exercise like off leash fetch 20 mins + and a 2 mile walk. She is go go go. great at settling on place and in the crate but with freedom she really seizes the moment.

Hey there Ken / Kayl! Thank you for another great video, as well as the checklist PDF! I had a quick question if you don't mind, I might be picking up a new puppy soon but the breeders are located halfway across the country (about a 3 hour flight). If I decide to fly with my puppy (in the cabin of course) is there anything you would recommend I do to make the experience less stressful for them? Thanks! =)

Hi! You guys are a great resource to us puppy parents!
At around how many months can a puppy "ask you to go out to potty"?
I bring our almost 4 month old puppy out every couple of hours or so but he still doesn't come to me or go to the door by himself.
I have to catch the signals and I'm not always fortunate though 🙍🏻.

We have 2 crates, one in the bedroom for sleep
and one in the family room for short crate stays during the day. Our 15 week lab does not pee in the overnight one but often pees in the daytime one. She also goes out a ton during the day. Goes to the door and rings bell. Not so many accidents when she out but she pees in the daytime crate often when she’s in there. Not sure why....

This is a great video at the right time for me but only one thing isn't covered and I don't think I missed it: age. 6 months? 9 months? 1 year? Is there an age that most dogs should start showing the signs discussed in this video? Thanks

Do you use the tech gadgets to help them get over separation anxiety? We are getting a puppy and I am going to be home full time for 2 wks when she gets home but I wonder if this is going to help with our puppy that she hears our voice when we are at work. Not planning on leaving her for more than 4-5 hrs at a time.

We ended up putting our crate away after a year or two. We had a HUGE one cause Charley is so big so it was taking up a TON of space. He's not had to use the crate since he was about 9 months old, but my "puppy" we had to use it frequently. She went through a phase where she was getting into everything when we were gone. After about 2 months of being super supervised and put in the crate when we left, she's not gotten into anything. Defiantly an amazing tool to use!

My dog chews only her toys but when bored will destroy a soft toy in a hot minute. Soft toys, if ingested can cause blockage. Please, if your dog is like mine, do NOT leave soft toys.

what about sleep? I've been thinking about this more lately because my puppy sleeps in her crate, but she's about to be spayed and living cone life. I'm not sure how I'll manage that with the crate, but generally speaking how to train them to sleep on the floor or somewhere else and transition out of a crate?

I'm thinking of getting a puppy. I will be going to work from ten to twelve hours a day. Before I can come home. Should I not think of getting a dog? I don't want to be unfair to the dog. I'm alone and I need a companion. That is why i'm looking into getting a dog. Is my wife passed away in november. My children are grown and they no longer live at home. Should I get a dog If I only have a few hours a day distant with it?

First time puppy parent here. How old does a puppy normally need to be before they are ready to roam the house? He’s a 3 month old Aussie and generally goes potty outside now.

    • @jamesstewart6623
      @jamesstewart6623 3 года назад +4

My dog was roaming the house after 3-4 months old. He's never had a crate and he's never chewed anything other than his toys. Consistency is key. I use a box for his toys. He knows he can take from that box and he can play and chew on them. I leave my shoes in the same place every time I remove them and he has been trained to leave that area alone. If I go out to work, he will head straight for his bed in my bedroom, where I always leave a dentastix/rawhide treat. He has full access to the house when I'm at work except the bathroom and there is never an issue. If you are going out for long periods I would suggest at least a 20 minute walk/play before you leave, just to burn off some of his energy. Also, when I do leave I always leave music on in the background just so he's not in silence the whole time. The neighbours say he rarely barks too. He's 2 years old now and is well used to his routines.
They would be my tips for you anyway. I hope some of it helps

How much throughout the day should a puppy be crated? My understanding is that they should be in the crate most of the day -- except when they're training, pottying, intentionally playing/exercising with us, or closely supervised. And then they can graduate to more and more freedom as they prove themselves capable. My husband is convinced this is mean and overly restrictive. Do you have resources to convince him otherwise?

  • @paulaaquino

I'm of the opinion that: if you're not ready to find some pee/poop around the house every now and then and you're not ready to find some chewed up stuff when you come home, you shouldn't have a dog...
