This is so FASCINATING omfg. I've been thinking on this film and short story for awhile now and while theres so much interesting tidbits and details I've noticed or I've heard others talk about, I've literally never heard anyone mention the symbolism behind the hats before?? And its just like 😭 one more reason to cry about the level of detail that went into the filmmaking process for it.
Ennis does see Jack as the disruptor and its so interesting that the black hat symbolizes it too bc jack loses the black hat when ennis and him meet again and all throughout the time between their reunion and then their last meeting, which you can maybe think of Ennis just like. Idk, the open longing for and missing Jack is 100% on par with how much Jack missed and longed for him, too. Like Jack's hat stays light like Ennis' throughout the scenes where you can tell Ennis really wants to be with him, even in the scene where he comes up from Texas after the divorce bc even tho Ennis turns him away you can see how much it eats at him and how bad it makes him feel that he had to do it.
So like...idk my point is that I think its telling that the costume designers went with the black hat in the scene where they have their major fight after what you can assume has been years of the relationship souring, bc it comes back again at the height of their tension and ennis' hurt and frustration with himself and his life.
and if u take it even further, the black hat really does signal disruption bc then ennis tells jack (while hes wearing the black hat) that he should just leave him alone, and then later on he learns from jacks father that jack had been talking about bringing a new man up there to fix the ranch up with, which is a huge moment of revelation to ennis in the book cause to him thats all he needed to hear to confirm in his own mind that jack was murdered.
IDK IDK I hope my half high rambles were clear I just love your analysis on the hats and now I think theres so much tied to the color choices of the hats they wear throughout the film

Your review is interesting, instructive, very enriching and entertaining as well. I also like this movie a lot and used to watch it many times about 16 years ago. Before watching the movie I read the short story and loved it. I also like westerns and horses. I also liked Michelle Williams' acting along with Heath and Jake. You brought up very interesting topics that I hadn't thought about before. It enlightened my eyes. This is the first review I've seen of this movie. I also really liked your review of Matthias and Maxime and I learned and enjoyed it much more than about ten other reviews I saw of this film. You seem to understand and know how to analyze movies. By the way, Brokeback Mountain was my favorite gay movie until I discovered Matthias and Maxime about six months ago and became obsessed with this captivating movie. It is now my favorite and Brokeback Mountain has been relegated to second place. More gay movies I like are: 3. From beginning to End (2009). 4. Undertow (2009). 5. Just a Question of Love (2000). 6. free fall (2013). 7. The Blonde One (2019). 8. David's birthday (2009). 9. The Blue Caftan (2022). 10. shelter (2007). 11. the way he looks (2014).
    Thank you and well done.

I saw this video analysis a week ago and haven't stopped thinking about it since-- it explains the movie better than other commentaries I've listened to, FINALLY explains why the movie stuck with me so, explains some past relationships of mine, and explains relationships in general. So many of us have internalized prejudices of how life "should" be and so many of us never overcome them even when the right-for-us person presents themselves. Love often doesn't overcome all. Most of us are the archetypal Ennises more than we are archetypal Jacks-- being a disruptor and setting a new script past childhood hang-ups, family hang-ups, societal hang-ups, etc. is the rarer path (occasionally punished dramatically too). Most people would like to fancy themselves 'progressive' b/c that fits their white hat illusions of a goodie and it fits them to be included in politically correct convos... yet those same people only follow in the wake of the disruptor black hats who bravely set the standards before others. I've been convinced of the central argument here that this is ultimately not a love story, but a story where Ennis's prejudices dashed true commitment that Jack was capable of making.

You are beautiful, I have seen this movie many times and I love it, what I understand about Enis is that she only fell in love with Jack, and never got married. Sorry I do not speak English

The 2 billion types of pains in hating yourself = Great prestigious drama
The 2 billion ways of surviving in hostile environs (effective or not), w/o suppressing too much = Not an interesting subject (to Ang Lee, or Jane Campion, or Ledger/Cumberbatch's "Manpain for Awards" angle.)
