Ayo yo! It's Taledo. Just dropping some more info!
The one thing this video is due to VTubers who are clearly uncomfortable with being shipped and/or shipping culture going WAY too far. While some are fine with it, others aren't. They are real people with they own boundaries.
    Tl;dr Just be Respectful
Anyway, lemme know your thoughts in the comments! Glad I got editing done despite my school and work load. 💜

@@aradraugfea6755 Toxic Shipping has always been around. The Term "Ship" was popularized from Scully and Mulder ship of the 90's show X-Files. Teen Wolf and Once Upon a Time are two fandoms I remember having SUPER toxic fans who were pissed their gay headcanons weren't real and sent death threats. Once Upon a Time got to the point where they would start harassing some of the male actors, their families and their children. Death Threats, Trending Twitter Topics, you name it. No one was spared unless they specifically said they liked the gay ship. Writers, Staff, Guest Stars. I also remember relatively small fandoms like Warehouse 13 getting super toxic about their ships.
The only fandom I _ever_ remember being chill was the Haven fandom, which had cute names for the ships (I think it was Pancakes and Waffles, depending on which male character liked which one) and the shippers of all sides actually got along really well and sometimes crossed over so one person had multiple ships. I dropped out of the show half way through, so it COULD have gotten toxic (especially because the show took a way different tone by the end), but I remember that shipping culture being some of the best I've ever seen. I dont think we'll see that again.

I think shipping is ok until it gets harmful to either party. Like ok cool the Vox and Shoto thing I thought was fucking adorable, but at the same time they aren't actually together and I respect that. I ship the characters but not the people and that's where things get icky for the community is when people start shipping the ACTUAL PEOPLE.

    • @Cchan-xy3hc
      @Cchan-xy3hc Год назад +84

Yeah and for some reason when other streamers' names are mentioned and deleted in Shoto's chat when they bring them up unprompted, it doesn't seem like people get the message. They continue to spam Vox's name and I feel bad for the mods but it is what it is. We can't stop incredibly delusional people. I do think Vox's mods need to take action faster in deleting and banning people who disobey the rules and I do feel he needs to not be so reactive to those comments and let his mods deal with it otherwise people push the blame onto Shoto and it becomes a whole mess cuz then there are people who think Shoto doesn't deal with the same shit. It's all a mess. I feel people need to realize that they need to see vtubers for who they are. Not reduce it to nothing but a ship. It's delusional and out of hand because some people just don't treat vtubers as people anymore but anime characters that they can freely fuck with.

Shipping/Headcanon/etc. is all fine, but... keep it light. Remember it's in your head. Don't get twisted just because your ship/headcanon didn't work out. That's for fictional characters and real people. Mark and Jack were in on the joke for a while, but, like happens, there will always be the people who either A) decide this is the funniest joke in the entire world and will tell it literally nonstop until the horse requires a forensic spectrograph to identify B) take the joke WAY too seriously, and decide these two people they have never seen outside of a "heightened" context are actually perfect for each other and get ANGRY when the real, flesh and blood individual gets a girlfriend.
BOTH are cringe as hell. Like... okay, neurodivergent people exist, a lot of these fanbases are huge at a level it's literally impossible that there isn't someone in the group that struggles a bit with social queues and boundaries, but inability to intuit boundaries is no excuse for ignoring boundaries once they are set.

The biggest problem with the vtuber community is (and I’m making an assumption) that at LEAST 25% to 50% of the fan base are obviously children. To have this type of behavior and mentality is completely childish. Let’s say you’re new to vtubers and you think two content creators would make a cute couple. It only takes ONE warning (sometimes a dedicated PSA video) by one of the creators to say “please don’t ship” for a mature viewer to get the message and not bring it up again. It’s the children that hears these PSA statements from their favorite creators and they STILL publicly ship them in the chat and comment section. It kinda makes me wonder how their parents are not teaching them anything. It’s sad that it takes a complete stranger on the internet to drill it into their tiny skulls about respecting others and that a mere fan has no place or right to force an ENTERTAINER to live or act in whatever way they desire. Go write a fanfic or draw fanart if you want your fantasies to come alive. But don’t shove your disrespectful fantasies in the faces of your favorite entertainers. Thank you 🙏

"Ironmouse will never date anyone. Do you understand me? IRONMOUSE will never date anyone. If /I/ find someone, you will NEVER know."
That's Ironmouse, the most parasocial Vtuber out there. One who is pretty damn open about just about everything in their life letting you know that, yeah, you're "famoly" yeah, she spent 7 days hanging out and chatting with you. Your edits with images in the bg are immaculate. Whatever anime that's from when you're describing the origin of the word shipping is so accurate it hurts, and I say this as someone who enjoys ship content (feels weird/wrong to call myself a "shipper" when I'm generally flexible about pairings)
Edit: I will say that for Ironmouse and Cdawg, though, that I hope to God whatever partner they end up having is super secure bc from what we see of their relationship the two really do have a deep emotional connection that can often lead to/be part of/be mistaken for a romantic connection. Regardless of whether they actually are that way, the important thing is that the people involved don't want others to take it that way. Makes me feel like an old auntie when I see people with a connection like that because 50% of me is like "yes, I see where people are coming from, damn I wish I had that" and 50% of me is like "no, gotta respect their boundaries."

I think the way people push the vtuber shipping is interesting as there is a layer of self-awareness feeding the community a bit such as Hakos Baelz and IRyS. Takamori was the most toxic shipping war out there and as someone who does have shipping pairs in a purely fantanical way, it was quite sad how people tried to force Takamori. Fanservice is always a part of these idol idustries and sometimes they play into it, but this doesn't excuse this as fact even if they heavily imply it.
IMO It's okay to ship as long as you understand the distinction between the person and the character and not let it shade your views on the actual person

I remember this one instance Uki Violeta was collabing with someone new and, since he is the flirty type of streamer, they were flirting and it was funny. Then chat had to bring up other livers (and saying Uki had a Harem 😭) IN THE OTHER PERSON'S CHAT TO MAKE SURE HE SAW IT! LIKE THATS WEIRD!

i think its extremly weird to ship real people thats why i always found shipping within the vtuber community kinda weird. as a joke im cool with it like the way uki and fulgur handle it or how it started with mysta and mika before people started getting weird but otherwise its just weird for me.
but im not even saying people should stop doing it just tone it down a bit and STOP BEING WEIRD.

Pretty solid video overall about some of the most popular ships. Most ships are somewhat played into by the vtubers but there will always be fans that take things far and start to make it the problem of the vtubers themselves or others. I think there is a healthy way of just making cute fanart or clips and such but actually bothering the vtubers themselves or other people they collab with is definitely out of line. I am pretty sure all the ships mentioned in the video have addressed it at some point at some level so that fans can tone down. Even if it sometimes gets ignored I'm glad that hololive girls have it as a standard rule in their chats that chat shouldn't mention other streamers/vtubers if they aren't brought up by the streamer themselves. I think most vtubers have that chat rule and it helps. I'm glad that none of them are like fake friends or anything though like it does seem like they are all still very close even if they have had to talk to fans about some boundaries/rules (some people just need to be told clearly)

Shipping can get weird, and sometimes ugly. As a long time Fanfic reader and RPer... it has its dark side.
On the surface level, it isn't bad. It is usually fans enjoying an established pairing in a media (comics, books, cartoons/animes, tvshows, etc;). A lot of media has and will keep playing at the "will they/won't they?" Trope. The love triangle, who will win the love of the main character. And just a light enjoyment in the "What if?" Pairing of characters that aren't together, but some daydreamer would like to see.
The difference between that and what is discussed in this video is what Taledo nails on the head. These are real people. They might play at being characters a bit. But they still are sharing a lot of themselves from behind these Avatars. Not counting that they are active with their fan bases' art, clips, topic videos, and in some cases fanfics. It can get... distributive. These shippers can get vocal and even angry if their ship isn't recognized.
One of the many reasons I stopped Role-playing established characters. Why, beyond a close friendship, I wouldn't write a romance that isn't cannon in fanfics.
Hell, I want to write fanfics based on Hololive, but will never go beyond a close friendship/family vibes they share. No romance between the characters... because the characters I am writing are real people. The characters I write are based not only on their lore, but things they share with their fans. And that can get weird as has already been established by this video.
    Great video Taledo

im curious how you feel about vtuber fanfiction. generally (but ofc there are still weirdos) people are writing about the characters themselves and not the actual people.. unless someone has explicitly said they dont want fanfiction of them either, how do yall feel about this?

    • @elizabeths.2130

personally I think it's okay even if the writing is somewhat personal (like the author mentions mannerisms of how the person behind the vtuber talks, things they've brought up that make them more relatable, etc.) because that's how you characterize and make it convincing. An example is temporary alpha (I think it's one of the most popular vtuber ship fics???) cuz it's a voxto fic that's got a ton of detail. Pretty sure shoto even recognized the author and thanked them for writing something the fans love so much...still, the fic's omega-verse and real explicit. The writer tweeted for people not to spam about it when Shoto was reading fanfictions one day, and he/she generally seems to not be on social media a lot or "push" the ship outside of ao3 (and if the author tweets they censor names so they don't appear under vox's or shoto's tags). idk as long as you keep the shipping to yourself or limit it to a site like ao3 I think it's not harmful.

i can’t say much since i only read a few vtuber fanfics but i like it more when it leans into the vtubers’ persona and lore because i’m curious to see how people make use of established concepts and incorporate that into their world building. an example i can think on top of my head was when i read the very first oceanlaw fic (appropriately titled, ocean law). i was enamored by the vivid language of the author and how they made use of finana being a mermaid and selen being a lunar dragon. of course, there were hints of inside jokes here and there but it wasn’t anything too personal. it stays into the realm of vtubers than the people behind them. you can tell that it’s fiction - a well-written one but not enough to somehow sell me the idea that they’re dating irl. so personally, as long as they focus more on the persona than the person behind it, the vtuber isn’t against/uncomfortable with fanfictions and the shippers don’t force it upon others or the vtubers themselves…. i have no problems with it. fanfiction itself isn’t inherently bad, it just depends on the author and the people reading it.

This reminds me of a coworker I briefly had at my first job. Big, open shipper of Septiplier (Jacksepticeye/Markiplier), had an instagram almost entirely dedicated to drawing horny art of the two (other art too, but enough to contend for the majority), and spent a good amount of time during our shifts trying to convince me they could actually be a thing- I believe this was around the time Mark started dating Amy. I wasn't aware of the bigger issue surrounding fans like that at the time until much later tbh.
Their biggest piece of 'evidence' being that Jack once alluded to possibly being bi in a video once(? it's been a minute)- which I did not and have no interest in confirming. I'd never met someone like that in person before. It's been some years, hope they found a healthier outlet since then

Shipping real people together is completely weird, but I also find it weird that these vtubers throw suggestive comments back and forth at eachother or just straight up FLIRT. That is what encourages these people to go absolutely crazy about these ‘ships’. I’m definitely not blaming these vtubers for the weird shippers that exist in their audience, but just saying y’know

Honestly, shipping in general is just getting terribly out of hand. People violent to others just for shipping something different than what they like. And those are just fictional characters.
I can't even fathom how horrible and scary it must feel when these gross shipping wars happen with characters who are actual living people.

Gonna always hope Conner and mouse stay friends forever or eventually get together. Been watching Cdawg for a long time and will watch twitch when I can. But I never get man when he's with other women but I do genuinely ship him and mouse as I think they would be good for each other. I don't go onto their channels and most forums, unless the thing is talking about the ship, to pro ship them or tell people "it's the only ship"
I think a big issue with most shippers is that they are so invested in their ship or headcannon that they ignore reality and the feelings of others(such as the person or writer) You can see this most present in the MHA fandom, with Baku and deku. Where they legitimately want to murder the mangaka because of the cannon.

The way I see, it's like if customers at your job starts shipping you with your coworker. It's hella awkward and you're put in a position to laugh it off (or play into it if your coworker is chill like that). "How could this be weird?" nobody asked. I replied, "Well I'll tell you!"
Imagine if you're working one day and your coworker isn't there. It would be really fucking weird if a customer ran up to you at the job to let you know that they saw your coworker talking with someone else at the park (or wherever). Just because they ship you two together. 😑 This is why I don't participate in shipping culture.
