- I co-wrote this episode from Season 3 of Tracey Ullman’s HBO series. It won a GLAAD Award and introduced Jonathan Meade, a character I played in this and a few other episodes. Guest stars Dan Butler, Julie Kavner, Seymour Cassel and Scott Thompson.
Compared to the crap we have on television today, Tracey was that diamond that was polished to a glass finish. And she could perform different roles on every facet of that gem. What talent.... Sad we can't go back in time.
This woman is something else. Beyond talented. I have never seen an actor as talented as she .

When I was a kid, I had a piano teacher who lived in East LA. She dressed exactly like Ruby Romaine and always talked about her glory days. She looked a lot like her. When I first saw the Ruby character I was blown away.
"Oh please! Time stood still in the rectory when THAT show was on!" This episode is solid gold...every second of it.

BEYOND BRILLIANT, A BACKCOMBED WIG, CAT'S EYES GLASSES, THE VINTAGE YOU WOULDNT WEAR, HORRENDOUS MAKEUP, ADD TRACY AND STIR, A COMEDIC GENIUS- she never ceases to amaze me. How does she contort her face, alter her voice, male or female...bravo Tracy!

Her male characters aren't believable but she really really tries to pull it off. It doesn't make one cringe watching her as a guy
This was one of the best shows, EVER.
Tracey has been one of my favorite female comediennes from great Britain she does every impression impersonation of all sorts of characters I really loved her show on the fox network in 1987!

I love so many of her characters, but I think Linda Granger is my favorite. She’s the only one other than Kay who is the person I legit want good things to happen to. Her performing for her “audience” at the end was so uplifting. Those…uh… how do I put this… dedicated fans really were the closest they’ve ever been to heaven.
I think she was my favorite too! Definitely the most fun to write for.

I just want to let you know that as a closeted young teen who probably should not have been watching HBO when this show aired, Tracey Takes On did so much to make me feel "normal" and that you can have a bawdy sense humor with real intelligence and displaying respect and care for the characters. The personalities Tracey portrayed certainly were "types" but never felt like "stereotypes" but full characters that we grew to love. Oh, and I loved your appearance in this episode! I still remember the "You're gay?"..."Oh, yes!" response from the first time I saw it "some" years ago, haha.

Holy crap! I was 15 years old when I discovered Tracey Takes On. My mom was a huge of the Tracey Ullman Show and loved TTO. I remember Sydney was the first character I was introduced to and I was hooked! This show opened the door for me to come out to my mom. Thank you so much for your amazingness George!

Be a Doll and define your understanding of the term "Online" as you would have understood it in the *EARLY EIGHTIES* please? (just a teenie weenie lil reminder: this was supposedly in the days when, if you had a Dinosaurus 54 or a Commadore 64, or even a swanky new Macintosh Elephantum Pro; whatever you had at home in that line, it required it's very own sizeable room in your house - a bit like having another sulky teenager in the house! Also, the CD was only invented in the mid-late 80's - the entire concept of 'Mobile I. T.' hadn't even occurred back then... 's all I'm sayin'....!?!)
So right now, all I'm getting is visions of you standing out in some puddle in the pissin rain, doing your best to reach up to try and fill out some form or other that you've only gone and pegged to the bloody clothes line in the back yard!?!

Considering the ultra conservative. right-wing Zionist-leaning christian sect in America who hold such sway in American society and politics, I'm amazed this particular show was even allowed to air! Tracey Ullman made the rare and even more rare successful jump over the Atlantic to portray her new characters. Brilliant comedy and social commentary of society of that period......although nothing seems to have changed in the last few decades there......
Yes, very sound observations. I was just thinking the same thing. Someone commented about gay rights... That things can't go backwards... Ha! Have they not seen the decimation of women's rights etc. Progress is never assured, never complete. Complacency will allow these forces to drag us all back, one by one.

This was TV at its very best. Still there's some fine stuff out there today (not so much in this type of comedy) like Love, Victor (but breaking new ground, much like this did.)

That DVD release of seasons 3 & 4 by Eagle Video is such bullshit. They claimed they were the full episodes, when in fact they were merely highlights. It's a shame these proper, full episodes can't be obtained anywhere.

I got sucked into the plot and I'm unhappy.
The way I was raised, is that Jesus Loves the Children of the World: Red, and Yellow, Black, and White, since He created them all, of course God's Chosen People the Jewish people their brother descended from Esau ,the Arabs, and everyone else.
