It's just black metal with some death metal and ambient sounds mixed in. There are plenty of bands like this or at least there were couple of decades ago. Bands like Summoning, Pazuzu.

Their music is a carefully constructed mental experience; it is not for everyone, but as a fan I can say that their sound is addictive, and very different from everything else. It escapes labeling, it escapes comprehension. So don't try to understand and just live through it, or fuck off.

Alexandre Desrochers Ayotte im not a huge fan of their drummer at all. like. he cant keep time very well through and through. what he dkes takes skill sure. and he is skilled. but more practice i think here and there.

Witnessed them at Housecore Horror Fest I. Literally the mood in the place changed to this dark feeling as soon as they took the stage. Evil as it gets so far.....
I've never seen portal but I know the mood change your describing. When I saw Dimmu Borgir & cradle of filth that same mood swing happened, just a dark evil feeling that I hadn't experienced before.

For the folks saying that this sucks, it's not music, this is terrible, Portal is not for you. For those of you are intrigued, but don't quite get what is going on, I will explain what I believe they are doing. Portal are playing death metal with hints of black metal (musically and theatrically). However, what sets them apart is that the guitars(Bass, lead and rhythm) are purposely playing in a way that on the surface seems wild unhinged and chaotic, while actually being tightly controlled, planned and on time. The drummer, in contrast to most death/black metal players is not using the double bass set up as the time keeping, but using the tom toms in their stead. The lyrics are cosmic/existential horror in the vein of, and on their early albums, directly inspired by H.P Lovecraft. The music is designed to make you feel uneasy as the waves of feedback, distortion and dissonance wash over you. It leaves you no choice but to surrender to the insanity and accept your insignificance in a vast and often actively hostile universe or run away screaming. As for the outfits, it's theatricality and atmosphere, all designed to fit with the weirdness and insanity of the music.
I think this band isn't focusing on sounding good but attempting to make a trippy audio and possible visual experience and well it's not so bad in that sense.
Nothing relaxes me more on a rainy Saturday evening than sitting next to a warm fire in my rocking chair with my lap blanket and my cat while sipping on Chamomile tea and listening to Portal.....While my victim bleeds out in the next room.
