Mayhem's history is evil in itself from church burnings to suicide and murder . Those facts would disagree with that . Music wise this is not more evil than say Ordo , Portal just put an evil video to it .

Almost a decade later, I still have not seen a creepier, more disturbing music video than this one. I legitimately think the addition of stage play elements was to brighten it up a bit so it wouldn't send every viewer into a psychotic episode. And all that without any graphic violence.

@@TheGreenpig1 it's more ambient then it is metal per se. There's no riffs, verse, chorus, bridge, or melody lines it's just a cacophony of noise used to create a sonic experience. In ambient music atmosphere is more important then compositional structure, rhythm, or melodies.
@@billybobthekidiswack the structure of portal is greater then almost any band you could possibly name, there are INDEED riffs, riffs that are just incomprehensible to people like you, riffs that require precise and catastrophic amounts of intensity to write and preform. To undermine them as a band with “no riffs” is absolutely ridiculous, Portal are one of the more structured and layered bands there is.
@toriiVII I'd disagree with your first statement and say Portal's song structure isn't up to par to bands like Ad Nauseam, Gorguts, ulcerate, Blut aus nord, or Nero di marte. Go ahead and hum a portal "riff" I'll wait. I understand what they're going for and they do it well but there music just doesn't click with me. If you have an album from them you like to recommend I'll check it out.

i would love to see more videos like this. i remember being a kid in the 90s and seeing Tool videos on MTV and just feeling so scared and unsettled, but left wanting MORE. this takes me back to that. very cool.
Will Hyde I know this is ancient, but that is so fucking spot on, I feel the exact same. Also, I had very similar 90s kid experiences seeing Tool vids on mtv! I’ll bever forget the first time I saw the videos for “Sober” and “Ænima”... that was basically the beginning of my love for “dark” music and art, in general, though I don’t think I actually realized it till now, reading your comment and being transported back to childhood..
Those Tool videos were mind-blowing... & today I am reminded of that experience-- "Curtains" is 1 freaky clip! 🦃😈🦃😈🦃😈

This is the coolest fucking thing I've seen or heard in a long time. It's chilling- these are people and artists at the height of the scene they wanted to inhabit- it's inspiring!
This is genuinely disturbing. I love how so many black metal bands try so hard to be all "evil and satanic" and it ends up sounding like shit recorded in a closet, and when these guys do it it legitimately sounds evil lol

Some shots really trigger an uncomfortable feeling even though they are quite subtle but super surreal.
The overall 70 mm-film panorama aesthetic was a brilliant idea, too.

There’s something about being able to make a band based on lore, theology and physics feel genuine. Maybe I’m jaded but “image” bands lack the foundation and framework these days. This is either so incredibly thought out or pulled directly from the dark ether but either way, I’m into it

I found this by accident while lookin' up H.P. Lovecraft, which the band have previously used as subject matter. Cool video, fits Poe's poem nicely. The music's apparently chaotic but it demands to be listened. Glad I checked them out. Cheers!

It's interesting that apparently from what the band has said publicly, they meticulously produce these songs like actually paying attention to every little detail and song structure.
If you get into it , only in the beginning it seems more chaotic than it actually is. There is a system in this darkness

@@MRSludgedude their lyrics are a mix of cosmic horror, their own "Portal" lore, and Edgar Allen Poe's writings. It's meant to be somewhat cryptic, but using context clues, one can get the main idea of their songs. Also most of the vocabulary isn't difficult to understand, just very uncommon in normal conversation.

While Portal have their points, anyone who thinks they're the most intimidating musical act of all time never saw Neurosis in the late 90's.
Can you provide link to example. I've heard Neurosis and the darkest thing i've heard from them is Lost, but mainly because of the clip with scenes from the movie "Begotten". It's grim and nihilistic but i wouldn't describe the music itself as horrific.

Neurosis is intimidating but not nearly as horrific and cerebral as portal are. Portal genuinely feels like a supernatural entity at times despite most passive listeners chocking them up as “that creepy band” which is undermining their work too much, it’s silly to assume that portal’s just creepy and nothing more. Portal ranks among the greats like deathspell omega, ulcerate and vitriol simply for how extreme their concepts become in their minds, how their thoughts are the contents for their music to conduct into fruition, eliciting nearly paranormal energies with their art. I mean that so seriously, not necessarily in a “magical” sort of way but through a more inhuman connotation. It just doesn’t feel real what they guys have managed to create with their song craft. It’s not only impressive but just downright imposing and menacing.

Stream of Consciousness I am going to Joshua tree in two weeks so I will let you know. I made a playlist that only has one portal song and then all Pink Floyd. I figured it might counter counteract anything.
That sounds like a good back-up plan. I highly recommend "Echoes" or "Dogs" on mushrooms. It's good for meditation purposes and when you're in those trancelike, altered states.

I watched this video while peaking on shrooms. It was by far the best experience. Everything in this video is psychedelic-worthy. From the decrepit darkness from the video, to the actual music itself.

I've been a big fan of death/black metal for a very long time, listening to some of the most brutal and darkest music, nothing I've listened to before can be compared to these guys, this is the first band to actually terrify me, they're a darkness I can only describe as abyss-ful, something you can't escape
Portal is by far the scariest, heaviest, and most darkest band on the planet all at the same time
Very rarely are bands able to successfully convey a certain atmosphere that matches both song-writing and looks / stage presence. Usually they'll have one without the other (Ghost B.C. comes to mind). Portal is one of those rare examples of attaining both successfully. Shit is downright scary.
