    Recently got to play a single-pickup ES-330. What a great sound from the P90! Putting the pickup in the middle makes for a surprisingly versatile axe. It can sound sweet & warm or bright & snappy depending on where you set the knobs and how you play.

    Great demo and discussions! I think OK guitars explained that indeed top got thicker, and the thin ones 58&early59 developed some cracks around the jack plug.
    Love the 330, and the 225, the P90 in that position is as magic as the single coil in esquires !

    Had an Epiphone SG headstock snap off at the nut during the night. Was a very jagged break, so I applied a large amount of Superglue and jammed it back together. Then I spray painted the back of the neck with Rustolium semigloss black. Talk about a pro repair job.

      Epi headstock snap? I've never even heard of such a thing. Musta been some cheap construction, damn. Hopefully my Epi '66 SG holds up for decades, knock on wood.

    @premierguitar -- In regards to the top on the 58 335 vs. the 61 and the 1/16" difference in the thickness, in 58 Gibson had a lot of different elements on the guitar, the unbound neck, lower neck angle, shaved tun-o-matic bridge AND a 3 ply top. The problem was a lot of the top were cracking, especially at the input jacks. Gibson listened to the customers and tweaked accordingly, adding another ply to the top. This is why it sounds more resonant and open. A lot of people like that about the early ones. Nice video!

    Gibson went with the thicker top in '59 because the thin tops tend to crack, particularly around the input jack.

    There is no question about the awesomeness of the 335's (345's in my case) but speaking of awesome - everyone knows that song you played in the intro but I love it and I am embarrassed to say I can't name it - give me some help here, I have to give it a shot.
    EDIT: no worries - got my answer a little further down on the comments - TAKE 5 - I'm all over it now, thanks John.

    Great guitars. The burst sounds better. Elvin Bishop was using these in 1967 with Paul Butterfield and the cost then? About 300.00 bucks!

    Take 5... $K and make a down payment on one of those beauties!
    Between Ted and Leo, the 50's were an explosive period for guitar design. Amps following in the 60's but there were obvious examples from the 50's and into the 70's too.

  • @pdxbmw77
    @pdxbmw77 5 лет назад

    Early 58’s had three ply laminate bodies which then changed to four ply. Odds are that is the 1/16” difference.
