FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: First of all, thank you so much for watching this video! :) I get a few common questions, so I thought I could tackle a few of them here! I hope you have a great day and good luck on your portraits!! ✨ WHAT BRUSH DO YOU USE?: I use the script brush (this can be found in the calligraphy brush group). ✨ WHAT IPAD DO YOU USE?: Apple iPad (6th Gen. 128GB, Wi-Fi, 9.7in, color Space Gray) ✨ WHAT APP DO YOU USE?: apps.apple.com/us/app/procreate/id425073498 ✨ HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE SHARP POINTS AT THE END OF YOUR LINES?: The script brush is very pressure sensitive. So just press harder with a pen to achieve thicker strokes and press lighter to create the sharp points at the end. The fact that you just showed me in 7 minutes how to do something that I've been apprehensive about for so long.....ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU!! Seeing 30 min long videos can sometimes intimidate me & you really helped me create the DOPEST logo for a friend in such a short and simple way. I can't wait to grow. You DEFINITELY got a new sub here!
You did that so fast and broke it down for everyone to understand in a simple fun way. No over explaining, no self advertising, no bs just straight to it! Keep doing what you’re doing. Great video!
I've watched countless videos on this and I couldn't stay focused enough to learn much... You really broke it down in a way that made it fast and simple! Thank you!!!
I just made my first digital art thanks to you. I drew my boyfriend and it looks soo good!! First time doing anything digital art and this was a good tutorial for using procreate as i learned a lot about the importance in layering in digital art and navigating
WOW…. My girl just took vector art and made it so simple. Can you believe, there are courses worth a fortune for this. Thank you so much for this. Big fan ❤️
This is my favorite “toonify” tutorial because EVERYONE builds from the bottom up and you’re constantly having to turn layers off so you never see where you already added colors. I absolutely LOVE this way! I knew there must be a way but my brain wasn’t able to organize it so THANK YOU!!!!!!!
I am so excited to try this! I’m a graphic designer and things are getting out of my hands anymore using illustrator or finding original artwork without using iStock and paying for it. Just ordered an iPad and Apple Pencil and I can’t wait to make my life easier!!!
Nice!! I'm a graphic designer too! 🤗 The only downside of Procreate is it's pixel based art. So that means if you scale your artwork to a larger size it will become pixelated. If you ever find yourself needing to create vector art (meaning you can scale your art up infinitely without it becoming pixelated or losing quality) then I recommend you check out Adobe Fresco! It's still an iPad app, but it creates vector art which is good for logos, etc.
you are truly beyond talented, and enjoyable to watch. no lie after hundreds of videos i’ve watched throughout the years for art, you may be my top!!!!
✨ Here is the order of my layers from top to bottom: • Black Outline Layer stays on top of everything • Eyes (eye color, then eye shadow, then whites of eyes) • Eyebrows • Lips (lip highlight, then lip shadow, then base lip color) • Skin Tones (skin highlights, then skin shadows, then base skin color) • Hair (hair highlights, then hair shadows, then base hair color) • White Outline to make your illustration POP! • Reference Photo • Background Color
Came here to say this is my absolute FAVORITE procreate tutorial! Very helpful and straight to the point! Also, I loveee your highlight/shadow style.. I first watched this when I started my procreate journey, and since then I've watched this at least 2 more times lol. I can't wait to see more! ❤️
You are so kind @Cristal Escobedo 😊 thank you so much for your sweet comment. Also, your portraits will get much better with practice! It would be so cool to compare your portraits from the beginning of your journey to your newest portraits 🤗
that was such a mad tutorial i just smashed out a great caricature in not very long at all! thanks to you and ipad and procreate - great instructional! so clear and easy to follow. super helpful! thank you!
I’m 2 years late, but I hope you’re feeling better. Depression is hard and losing loved ones can leave us feeling lost. Art is a great way to cope with feelings without just brushing them under a rug or submitting to them completely. Love ❤
THIS IS REALLY HARD ON PROCREATE POCKET!!!! but ima attempt it anyway cuz you make this looks so easy. Thank you!!! Def saving this in case I ever get an iPad!
currently learning procreate, and this makes me feel like at least 50% more at ease as someone picking up art/drawing as a whole without much prior knowledge. i've heard people go into detail about palette selection but seeing the (probably very common) way you picked the shadows and highlights was very insightful, along with using a reference image for the eye dropper. i'm sure this is basic stuff but you broke it down in a very digestible and far less daunting way. i'll be practicing this!
Thank you for showing me how to do this I have an old Ipad. Thinking it might be too old. I can't even update on it lol. Soon as I get the required equipment I will be doing just this. Thank you
I jus sat here step by step to get my first ever piece of anything worth being proud of, it wasn't the best, but I knew not to have any expectations. Thank you for this gem, I didn't know how to do anything on this app, I was scribbling in to color yesterday and found some new techniques with this tutorial.
YES! The drag and drop function is a TIME SAVER! 😄 But I'm happy that you jumped into making art! Just know that you will get so much better with practice. TBH even I have to do a few tries until I'm happy with a single line sometimes.. 😅 But that undo button is a life saver for me!
usually, I'd do the base skin color first. But for a project like this, doing the shadows before the base was really smart lol. This video was awesome, you're super skilled. Art is really difficult but also rewarding and fun, I'd say tracing is probably the easiest way to make art, but it still takes a lot of talent to pull of something like that.
I like your method of the order and breakdown of the shadow, highlights and base color. I like to do flat designs, but when I do add details this would be great to try! thank you :) it really looks great how you did it!
I'd love to see you do one of these of a guy. Particularly to see how you would deal with stubble or short facial hair. Excellent work! And very inspiring!
Another great tutorial. I can pretty much guarantee you that if you keep posting Procreate tutorials you'll attract a huge number of subscribers. You have skills, style and a clear narrative style. By the way, your process of putting color swatches right on the canvas is brilliant!
You are amazing! Thank you! I love love learning creative painting and drawing yet I usually quit frustrated because it doesn't look like how I want. I wanted to learn with procreate and my first art I have created was based on this video and it turned out great. Three hours and million times wanting to quit I finished so happy with my art! Thank you!
Definitely subscribed off this video alone! You’re so talented! And you explained everything perfectly! I’ve been really nervous about trying this but now I’m just excited to apply everything and really bring my art to another level! THANK YOU ♥️
Wow so I got my 2020 iPad Pro in March right before the 2021's came out. Well as bad as I wanted it and was looking to learn something new this pandemic I have barely touched it. Now and for one of the main reasons I wanted it was to learn how to draw, take Bass lessons and just keep my mind busy during a crazy year. Ok so less the life story I am 60 years old ....... Uugh! nevermind ! Old people talk to much sometimes. Great video and now to break it down one pause at a time until I get the hang of it. Super Thanks, Your new sub Calvin
Fantastic tutorial. I’ve watched a ton but none explained as well as you how shadows and highlights work. Great work. Looking forward to more from you.

How much you charge to do this for someone?
Hi! Do you have a website? Do you sell this service, and if so, what do you usually charge?

Omg. Omg. No way would I ever be able to do this. You make it look so easy. I will never question someone’s price for a cartoon ever.
You can! Of course it takes a little practice though! 😄

I recently did a portrait of my brother and it was just black and white with no life. This tutorial makes me want to try one immediately!
I used this tutorial and made myself a new profile pic today, and I'm a total Procreate novice. Thanks for this!
This is the best step by step video there is. It's very thorough. I am so glad I stumbled on your video!
OmG, I just got an iPad and Procreate and I thought the process was much easier. I have a lot to learn
oh my god that was really good tutorial. I don't even draw and you make me want to get procreate just to have fun with it
Thank you so much @Deandra Ford 😄 You should! It's so fun and you can create a lot of cool things in Procreate.
Made that look easy af! Excuse me while I feel motivated yet continue to struggle in procreate
It wasn't that easy when I did it. Lol
ive gone back to this video multiple times for reference. thank you so much!!! and thank you for not making it 20mins long 😭
Thank you for showing me how to do this I have an old Ipad. Thinking it might be too old. I can't even update on it lol. Soon as I get the required equipment I will be doing just this. Thank you
LOL you drew that outline in like a minute! wth!!! amazing
Thank you. I’ve watched other tutorials and they either go way too fast or don’t explain like you do. Thank you.
