- I expect this is going to sound far-fetched but stick with me. This is the second visit of this superb specimen, at least in this weight category. I'm now convinced it's a female. She's wearing ear tags. She knows where the water is, she looks up to see if the feeder is hanging, she doesn't exhibit any sign of nervousness/apprehension, all of which denote familiarity. She's young but certainly of reproductive age.
Could this be Luca, Simone's first daughter!?!
The weight gain since July would be impressive but, under the right circumstances, not impossible. There might be someone out there feeding her. 😠
Whoever it is, she's definitely checking out suitable lodgings for the winter season, even going so far as to start on some light remodeling.
Fun fact - if it turns out to be Luca and if she does have cubs this coming winter they will be the 4th generation to bless this porch with their presence. Kinda cool, I think.

He/she (?) BIG ONE! Noticed a few of you bear visitors seem to like that spot of your deck. Hibernation for the future? Even though that big one, was just nice to hear it sniffing. The ones that huff and at times snap their jaws are rather scary. Sure did enjoy the drink of water. 👍👍 What a spot!

She certainly seemed to be checking out potential lodgings for the winter.... really hope its Luca...it would make sense as she would remember feeling safe and welcome as a cub on your porch....but maybe thats me humanising bear emotions to much. Whatever happens, the bears are so lucky to have a safe haven ❤❤❤❤❤
I don't think it's anthropomorphicizing to suggest she recalls a 'safe zone' and that she feels secure. Large mammals have complex brains and it seems proximity to humans creates interesting connections: I just wish they were all healthy ones.

Oh my goodness that's a huge bear with beautiful trusting eyes. You never know what's gonna come up to Patrick's porch and we get to experience them through these videos. Not the same as being there but I really appreciate you sharing them with us, and definitely wouldn't have the guts to stand and film. 😅❤🐻
Wir haben hier in Deutschland einen Bäenwald wo man gerettete Bären hinbringt die irgendwo ein schlechtes Leben hatten. Und dort in einem Riesengrossen Wald jetzt Ihre Freiheit geniessen können und erstmal in ihrem Leben beginnen Höhlen zu bauen. Diese Tiere haben einfach mein Herz erobert. Ich gehe da sehr gerne hin und ab und an hören Sie zu wenn man mit ihnen spricht und interargieren. Ich bin absolut ein grosser Fan dieser Tiere und liebe Patricks Videos sehr. Dear Patrick, you are so lucky these beautiful animals are visiting you in your home. I just went on an Alaskan cruise, paid good amount of money, Near $300 of which to watch black bears in rainforest habitat with their cubs catching salmons and eat berries, climb up the trees.
What is the ear tag for? I forgot.
I also saw a tribal performance. They had hung skin of a 30 years old brown bear on the wall. Apparently it had killed a few dogs. Noted if bears kill dogs or people, it is punishable by death. Not same for people.Pissed me off.

I love your bears, and I love your birds! We only have nasty birds here-scrub jays, magpies, crows, blackbirds, mockingbirds, and an occasional pair of nesting Cooper’s hawks. I do enjoy listening to the mockingbirds though; just wish they had nicer behavior! Oh, and we have quite a few hummingbirds.

I thought that another bear was Luca! This one looks huge by comparison, more like a army tank and I'm sure it's a boy but what do I know. If this is Luca who is the other bear who is so at home at your place Patrick?
Even if Patrick did not mind the bear giving birth and hibernating under his porch it does not seem like a safe place to do so seeing that there's a number of other bears and animals that frequent Patrick's front porch.

I don't know if it's Luca. Simone taught all her cubs to not bother your porch or other surroundings and the times Luca has visited, she was always careful to not bother anything. But you've been observing the bears and have more experience about how they are.
Also it would make sense because since she states visiting Simone stopped. And then it was mainly ruby and Luca for awhile. I’ve been wondering why only ruby was visiting as of late. I wonder about Simone and her cubs. Would love it if Luca brought her cubs to you so early or had them there! She’s known you since a young gal- so maybe it’s possible!
You know these bears better than anyone, so maybe it is Luca. I hope no one is feeding her, because that could lead to trouble. Though it's hard to imagine she could get that chunky that fast on just regular foraging.
And speaking of trouble... "Light remodeling"! - I gasped when she tore the lattice slat loose. Not sure how you'd deal with a bear determined to den under your porch.

So worried about Simone but I remember bythis time last year she was huge too. She had 4 cubs. If this is Luca hope her 1st batch isn't that many.

Its a good thing these bears are used to you. Being that close to the edge of your porch right next to a bear that size could end badly if the bear isn't used to you cause it could easily get it's paw between the rails. That bear though looks like it has mange. Its missing quite a bit of fur. I wish I lived in an area like that. This bear also has been in trouble before or at least documented cause it has an earring.

C'était juste une hypothèse, à laquelle je n'accorde plus bcp de mérite. Une telle prise de poids est possible, quoique peu probable, mais c'est la dégradation de son état général qui m'amène à douter que ce soit elle. Un mystère de plus à percer !

You could be right that it's Luca. I recall that Simone got quite rotund last summer when she was pregnant with her quads. You might have to put some strong wire fencing around the area under your porch to discourage ursine homesteading.

Two questions Patrick. In the years before you started showing the bears on RUclips did you ever have some living under your porch? Second what is the writing on that ear tag that is visible on back side of ear? It is my belief if that indeed is a female that the marks/rubs on the butt come from breeding. She is short and stocky like a young female would be. A male that size would be much longer. It’s hard for us to compare size with no other reference, is she as big as Simone was with her first cubs?
He/She seems to have a bit of a bald spot on his/her bum. Poor thing. I can't imagine what it must be like carrying around that fur coat. Must be awful. Beautiful bear. Thank you for giving them some nice water. They love you. Great video Mr. Conley. Be well😊❤

I thought the exact same thing too. I wanted to pause an image of her face to compare to a younger Luca to see if there were any similarities and I paused right when she winked. All I thought was, only family trusts like this and these bears are family to Patrick. Has to be one of them IMO

How wonderful if this bear is Luca! But, whoever this rounded-out bear is, it does seem like she knows your voice. Being this big in August is a good sign she'll have plenty of fat reserves during the winter. And, if this is Luca and she does have cubs, how amazing would that be to have a fourth generation visiting Patrick's porch.

Nice to see bears again. I have missed them. If I remember right, Luca was a shy girl and her brother Milo was the opposite.

@@PatrickConley Your theory is strong, Patrick. I was almost in 100% buuut... then I looked at the Simone & Cubs Season 2, E1 video. I believe it's Luca that sneaks up to you on the side of the porch & looks at you? +1 for previously sneaking up on the side of the porch. -3 for having ttly different facial features! 🙁 The eyes & nose are SO different, it's hard to believe they could change that much. Esp since Simone & Ruby have much the same features as grown bears. That said, you are def the expert so my money is on you! Just a small observation I made...🤔

*Uncle Patrick* , I was thinking the same thing from the first video with the fluffy goodness. I saw the ear tags, and the familiar spirit of your porch being a safe space. I read people saying that this bear was sickly, and I have been praying thats not the case. *I immediately though of Luca being bothered by the bees/wasps and fighting them off* and hoping that didn't cause her any harm. I am so glad for another visit! And if this is indeed Luca, may she be protected and continue to find her safe space with you and the porch. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and our bear family. Blessings always, Uncle Patrick!

Oh she is magnificent! Entirely possible it's Simone's first baby-girl, Luca - what a tantalising thought! Whoever she/he is, there is certainly no lack of food in their life, thank God. She's a chunkster alright - Oh to get a blissful bear hug from that big, beautiful fur-covered, chocolate marshmallow. I wouldn't even care if she killed me, I would die happy!
I love how chilled and peaceful she is. The way she looks up at you, fully aware of your presence, and so relaxed. She knows you're her friend. Heart-melting!

Yes as mad as you might have sounded, Patrick 😁, you might be on to something. I'd thought this was maybe an older bear but that could just be the slow walking resulting from the, ahem, weight factor (sorry if that's you, dear Luca, but you are a little on the chubby side lol). And of course Luca would love to have her den/babies near a human she knows and in a safe, trusted place. And that would be the dearest, most touching thing... Thanks as always! ❤🐻

With bears, the fertilized egg doesn't implant until they go into hibernation. The babies are born in January, while the mother is actually semi asleep. They only weigh a lb. when they're born. This girl is just plain rotund, lol.

At 3 they are active. It is not beyond the realms of possibility this is a pregnant Luca.

If it is Luca, you might want to reinforce those slats now, maybe something in a sturdy metal, unless you want her birthing those cubs under the porch assuming she couldn't just get from there to under the house proper. LOL.
She is so "at home" - I suspect you are correct. She acts as though she has known you since she was born. It wouldn't surprise me at all to find her snoozing under your porch for the winter. Doesn't it look like she lost her right ear tag? I really hope somebody is not putting out goodies for her. That's not a good idea. Thanks, Patrick for this video and all the others!p.s. I'm not sure it's a bruise. Couldn't it be the color of her fur, because when she sits on her buttocks, it changes the color with the water, the leaves...
