Whilst I'm not a fan of covering that beautiful oak with black paint I see why you did, and it does fit in with the other doors around the yard really well. The disuse looks great. We had Latham's emergency fire exit doors fitted at the last place I worked at. They were excellent quality as I recall. Well worth the money and effort.
I think the blackened look really fits into the look of the rest of the courtyard. Latham are on the list for upgrading my garage side door once Christmas spending has finished :)
Yeah it fitted in lovely, I was worried it would be too sharp/crisp but it’s perfect. That have gone above and beyond to help me and really trying to achieve perfection, at the price point they demand you cannot get better I think
Another top job! The creosote look came out great and made the door look like it was there forever. IMHO - I would not add the steel bands to the door. Door looks hand made 50 years ago - I like that look.
I must admit when you painted the door black yes I was horrified but then you rubbed it off and yes you was right it does look dam good as a joiner myself I do like your workshop you have some nice Machines my own workshop is not as grand as yours but it does what I want and I always have are big workshop l work in l do like the big blots that push side piece’s to the brick work great idea good job sir it gets my Seal of approval 😊
Boarding, is in the eye of the beholder, i think it’s perfect for the surrounding, and we are not even thinking about how good the fitting is thats a given. And the relaxing music 😊😊 as i said in my last comment ditto.
Great looking door and you've done a fab job matching it to the surrounding. Thanks for all of your videos over the las year Ollie. Hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year -- with more quality videos!😁
Great looking door. Friend of mine installed his security door just like in this video, however, he didn’t do anything to disguise it. After seeing his work, I smiled and said to him that if he’s going to spend all this money to protect his tools he should have mounted the doors in a way where the hinges are on the inside, not the outside. Otherwise anyone with a screwdriver and a small hammer could remove the pins and waltz right in.
Not much different with his either. Now all you need to add is one more tool, a chisel and your in. I know people design doors so they have inside locking pins on both sides of the door jam that prevent that. However they didn’t so this big fancy steel door doesn’t even need a lock to get in.
Got a lot of comments about this have a look at 14:32 you can see the hinge dogs. Open out doors are the most secure with concealed rebate and these pins.
No hate here, love it. I work in an environment with high security doors and while they have a purpose, they are soulless. You have found the middle ground.
It’s great as it is Oliver, you don’t need any embellishments. You and I are among the few men who read the instructions (rtfm). Compliments of the season to you and yours 🌞
Absolutely stunning you would never guess it’s a brand new steel door. Was definitely expecting a cameo appearance from metal man given the nature of the project 😂. Bloody love those glazing packers keep one box in the workshop for layout and another in the van for installing/scribing. Brilliant work as always and enjoy the Xmas break 👍
Another excellent video, door looks fantastic, the colour blending in well with the surrounding doors. Keep these videos coming, you are one hell of a craftsman. 👍👍👍👍👍
I also completely dig it. The sealant for glue that’s a bit risky too me. I do know some urethane caulking are very aggressive I’ve had to deal NP1 caulk to fix roof leaks . Great looking door very unique
I think it looks great. Steel bands too if you like. One thing maybe considering if you want it to look old is you could random up the widths a bit to give it a more old school look. Thanks for sharing
Nice job Oliver, ....... IMO you should put some sort of pull handle on the outside, cos in frosty weather moisture can freeze doors shut and a key pull isn't enough to get them open (ask me how I know 🙃🙃🙃
Yeah I think I will add a discreet pull handle at some point, thanks!I really love not having a latch handle outside as I can secure my workshop instantly without locking while in the yard
@@BradshawJoineryjust always need to remember and keep the key in your pocket and not to hang it up inside or you’ll be testing how secure that new door is 😂
@@BradshawJoinery Thanks for reply, I've been using bond & seal from Wurth and it's been tested here in the west coast of Ireland , can't buy the adhesive you used in Ireland , I'll say it again great work love watch your videos , I do similar work as yourself in Ireland but a struggle to get the rates we deserves
Cheers mate, with the amount of actual trash /uneducated info on the internet and RUclips it surprises me that someone who has spent 17 years constantly learning and trying absolutely to get better and better gets slated. But I’m up for meeting anyone and filming the better ways of doing things if someone can help me learn and share that knowledge because that’s what this channel is about. Funnily enough no one has taken me up on it yet.
Outward opening doors are most secure against attack, the home side is protected by concealed rebate and hinge pins so the door cannot be opened even if hinges removed
Well disguised typical farmyard look - great to hide workshop inside. Decorative steel bands would add to the look . . . message this door will withstand attack! The hinges also provide an insight - this is not a standard door.
I hope you left the bandsaw cutmarks on for a bit of authenticity. - you did - nice. Edit - OOH nice treatment - I'm a bit of a sucker for old wooden doors and have lots of photos of OLD doors, usually taken in Spain, Italy etc and this reminds me of a barn door in a run down finca (farm) in Mallorca I found that was obviously a door that had been tar painted at some point in it's long history, but a lot of it had worn off over the possibly more than a century it had been hanging and it looked almost exactly like this.
hey yeah, your comment about sums up the work flow, and my thought process haha. A family friend has a photography club in Australia and they did a doors of quairaiding calendar a few years ago. lovely pictures of ageing doors
13:58 can see i scribed a solid timber piece in to make it solide then sealed around it, i dont like foam for gap filing tbh, good for creating a backing prior to sealing though
Looks Great. But I have a security question, does having the hinges in the outside undo the security features. Could I just 'pop' the hinge pins and open the door??
@@NathanNostaw around 14:30 the plastic caps show a male pin ont he door edge that prevents the door from falling out if the hinges are cut off, these are concealed in the double rebate
You definitely want to scumble some brown and black paint on those hinges to age them and make them look old and rusty to match the rest of the door. Right now, they stand out like sore thumbs. Might want a little if the scumble on the lower half of the external keyway too.
Love the work man but you cant be serious resawing that material w/ those huge knots and defects. Looks great for a year or two until it starts to fall apart.
cheers bud, itll be ok for my own gaff, i will keep it stained well, its on the sheltered eastern side of the building and i can glue knots back on if they fall off :). Different story for a customer for sure.
You need to buy locking pins for the hinge side of the door. Your security has a huge flaw that makes the hinge side the new opening side with a hammer, chisel, and screw driver. I also hope it has some locking bar on the bottom because you put a handle on the inside which is easy to get opened from the bottom. Hopefully but not likely your bolt won’t be tied to your inside door handle, automatically disengaging when you pull the handle down. Not supper secure really. Plus you put it on RUclips for any criminal to see. Hope you read this and do something about it. The make pins that you just replace a few screws on your hinge brackets. Also you can get plates for sealing the bottom or replace the door handle to a knob if code allows it.
Hi matey, the door is really secure in all the aspects you are concerned with. Double rebate or concealed rebate hides the existing hinge pins you suggest (there is a clip of me talking about installing the cover caps in the video where you can see them) the concealed rebate runs along the floor too. Handle just pulls the latch the 5 point locking with around 15 bolts is operated on the key
be carefull if you fit these to timber frame buildings, we thought was dogs bollocks until on night pikeys popped the thing open like a tin conbeef. perfect in concrete though. never underestimate the power of a pissed happy go likey with a crowbar and a thirst, was carnage!
I screamed when I saw you pull out the black paint. But the finished result looks amazing! Should never have doubted you 🙂
That door looks amazing and like it's been there from the start. The band would also be a nice touch but not needed. ❤ 💯 👍
The attention on the door casing and jambs is 👌🏼
