    So Riker’s solution was that good that it was classified. That explains why he was offered so many commands and at the same time explains why he refused so many commands. “With great power comes great responsibility”. More reason for him to be my favorite character!!!

    We all knew that Kirk never truly believed in "the no-win senaro." He always cheated and avoided death. Was until the battle with Khan in the mutar nebula to see Spock die that he no longer believed in the no win senior.
    In into Darkness, kirk always acted arrogant and believed that he could he get away. Never believed in fear until he had seen at the end of the barrel of a gun than turned to his crew to face them

    To my knowledge, I believe one of the more creative ones was Nog's and his negotiations got so complex the simulator crashed. Leave it to a Ferengi to win by barter.
    A Star Trek RPG I played a LONG time ago, my solution was putting antimatter bombs in escape pods and playing dead in space only to power up and take off when the Klingons were collecting "prisoners" then detonating the pods to cover the escape. A nat 20 let me successfully pull it off.

    It is of course Star Trek's version of the philosophical virtue question, most commonly referred to as the trolley bus dilemma. My answer to that is always that I wouldn't have allowed the situation to become so critical. In other words, like Kirk, I don't accept that there is a no win situation, but equally, I do like and hold valid the Calhoun solution.

    Something that's always gotten me: The Neutral Zone has to be many light-years wide: a ship struck by a mine, if it survived at all, should drop to sublight speeds.
    How the HELL did the KM get into the Neutral Zone when it was presumably going to somewhere not in the Neutral Zone, and, for that matter, WHY are Klingon warships lurking within the Neutral Zone itself to attack you? Perhaps the 'gravitic mine' throws ships rather than damages them.
    Which brings me to my solution: challenge the Klingon commander: what are YOU doing in the Neutral Zone, something most honorable, I'm sure, for you to be INSIDE the Neutral Zone instead of on the Klingon side of it. Did you see the dishonorable petaQ who laid mines near the neutral zone to cause innocent vessels traveling Fed-side space to be thrown into the zone? This is clearly a ploy by some dishonorable petaQ to cause us to fight one another. Who is this cowardly cur, we should be hunting them down!
    At this point, what is the Klingon commander to do? If he persists in attacking you, then he looses face in the eyes of his own people for being a dishonorable petaQ who uses dishonorable means to draw uninvolved ships into a position where he can "justifiably" attack them; IE, he's been exposed as having manufactured a casus belli.
    But it lets him save face by throwing someone else under the bus; he can blame it on the nearest Klingon pirate/criminal gang or the House his House is most hostile to. He can also blame it on Romulans that his ships have been tracking but unable to pin down. Having established that the KM is in the NZ through no criminal intent of its own, they can then haul it back to the border and chuck it over with a high-impulse tow for you to reclaim it, then tell you that THEY will go and deal with the malefactors, you need not get your soft Federation hands dirty.

    Interesting. I lapsed a bit on Enterprise, but came back when the relaunch novels came out. The beta canon version I'm familiar with (from those novels) is that NX-01 responded, but it was a trap using a Romulan remote capture device, and Enterprise was forced to abandon the rescue. I'd never heard the NX-02 version of events.
    All in all, I think I prefer the version that was always an "IRL" no-win, but entirely personal preference.

      I guess I'm weird.
      My solution:
      Move to just outside the Neutral Zone, as close as possible to the KM. Channel as much power as needed to the communication array and begin broadcasting a Distress Signal on every known channel, in Klingonaase.
      "Attention any Klingon vessel receiving this message. This is the U.S.S. Enterprise, Captain Ahff commanding. An un-armed civilian transport has experienced damage, and been left adrift. It has accidentally encroached on the Neutral Zone. We are requesting that any Klingon vessel in the area of (I think it was Gamma Hydra 6-5-7?) please respond under the Federation Rescue and Succor laws. Any vessel of the Klingon Navy to assist in this rescue will not be considered to have violated the non-encroachment sections of the Federation-Klingon Treaty, and this will not be considered an act of aggression. We offer you the salvage of the KM, minus it's warp and computer cores, including it's cargo, for the safe return of our citizens."
      Maybe it wouldn't work, but I would be doing everything in my power within the letter of the Treaty to rescue the crew of a Federation ship.

    1. Immediately get the Kobayashi Maru to change it's IFF so it looks like a Klingon ship. Then I would tell it to stop brocasting a distress signal so it's not investigated by Klingon border patrol. Then I would simply tow the Kobayashi Maru outside the neutral zone while using a Klingon IFF as well.
    2. Use a temporal beacon and get the Kobayashi Maru sent back in time.

    there are theoretically other solutions to no win senarios like this. for example in the kobiashi maru test, even if there are an 'infinite' number of romulan ships incoming, as long as the waves aren't terribly large in number, the cadets could beam an engineer over to the maru to start on repairs and while using kirk's short warp maneuvers to stay away from the ships, the cadets' ship could use low intensity phasers at modulating frequencies, ruling out every single modulation on each ship until they got though, because apparently every ship has a modulation frequency for their shields. i'm sure there is some technical solution to making the romulan's ship disruptors not do much or any damage, and the fight can be won.
    a fight which might not be able to be won is a super strong enemy significantly ahead of current technology, a type of extremely large and powerful ship, or a fake distress call from a ship where the cadet's crew does not know it's a fake crew until they see the fake crew with their eyes. strangely each one of these 'harder' senarios were in official episodes or movies and the 'good guys' were able to 'win'. it sounds like a no win senario when a host of almost unknown ships intent on destroying a single ship is the situation, but it's far from 'no win'. even wesley's no win senario you could have won. i forget if the crewman who died was pinned or just scared, but if pinned use a phaser or cutting tool, and if scared use a phaser on stun or knock him out and drag both crew. wesley couldn't drag both but a lot of cadets should b e able to competently drag 2 bodies in the time it took wesley to drag one. maybe figure out a quick fix to the explosion problem.
    regardless i liked the research put into the rest of the no win senarios on this video! i would have liked if the video touched upon dianna's no win senario also, but hey that was pretty cut and dry. i still think dianna troy's test had a way to keep everyone alive.

    Hello TriAngulum.
    The Kobayashi Maru Test was so influential in Sci-Fi that when a group of aspiring authors decided to come together and create a 'Trek-like' universe to write in, I came up with the Academy Test. This test was performed while the cadets slept. Each was put under sedation and taken to Sick Bay to be monitored both physically and mentally as they underwent the testing. While sedated, the cadets experienced a speed up of time in a 'dream state' and 'knew' they had been taken to a planet, beamed down, and given beam weapons to 'hunt' the other cadets. Supposedly, only one was to 'survive', even though the beam weapons were supposed to be set for 'stun'.
    However, anything the cadets did would lead to death in some manner. Food poisoning by eating supposedly 'safe' alien plants and animals. A cut or scrape would rapidly become septic and poison the cadet to death. And, the locked 'stun' setting was actually set for 'kill'. Hand to Hand combat would Always result in injuries that would be deadly.
    The test was not to see who could survive longest, but how the cadet dealt with the concept of death. Seeing others die, killing others, and being killed.
    Death can come for one in any of literally thousands and thousands of ways. Even if you've taken all prudent precautions, one can still die in an unforeseen manner. Many times, to events that one does not even have control over. So, it is better to have your cadets experience 'death' and know it for what it is, than fear some nebulous dreaded event. All young of all species have the subconscious thought 'that can never happen to me'. By making your cadets experience death, repeatedly, in any of literally dozens of ways, can break this 'conditioning' of the immortality of youth... and make them more 'adult' in their though processes thereby.
    In a manner of speaking, I equate this with my memories of USMC Basic Training. Where each prospective Marine is trained in many ways, and pushed to perform things that their 'civilian selves' would never have thought they could do, or survive (For me, it was rappelling down a cliff face. I was so afraid of heights and the 'openness' that I literally frozen in place. Until my Drill Instructor challenged me to follow him over the edge. He only went down a dozen feet or so... but by that time I was already on my way down, and was over my 'fear' of the unknown, the height, and the thought of falling to my death).
    These are 'Life Lessons' one can and should learn to better one's self. I am still afraid of heights, but I no longer allow my fear to rule me. Facing Death, when we have the technology to mimic it well, should be one of those lessons in life that makes one a better person. One that 'fears' death, but no longer allows such fears to control one's actions.
    I know, a long reply... but I had a few things to say, and I hope I said them well.
    speaking, Frank-ly

    My only issue with the Kobayshi Maru test is how can it worth anything to those administering it when everyone taking it already must know that there's no way to beat it? You can look like the bravest soul ever when you know that you were never expected to beat it in the first place so that would tell the examiners nothing about you in reality.
    I assume (at least) that it must be common knowledge that the test is a no win scenario due to so many of the original Enterprise crew on this video alone having come up with their own solutions beforehand so if word of mouth (or communicator lol) travels like that, then the test should be obsolete after a very short time IMO.

    My solution: use the coordinates of the Maru to send two engineers in space suits to the ship via subspace transporter with a ten-second retrieval. If it's an on-board trap, two officers are lost. If it's a false signal, the enemy would decloak first, allowing the engineers to return to my ship. If it's real, they can assist with repairs.
    EDIT: I forgot to mention the constant communication.

      You're referencing the episode Bloodlines from TNG... But Im sure you remember how unstable and unreliable subspace transport is... They mention it in the episode. Even with seasoned, top of the line officers, they had trouble beaming Picard to the Ferengi vessel... So how exactly are a group of cadets going to be able to do that for you? This solution simply wouldnt work in the end, as also, they could GET Picard to the vessel through subspace, but NOT beam him back... Great creativity though :)

    7:59 Well, since you're going Beta Canon here anyway...Spock was not Kirk's original First Officer, Gary Mitchell was.
    There are actually (at least) two sources for this. The trilogy My Brother's Keeper, a dissection of the relationship between Kirk and Mitchell, and one of the very old Star Trek Comics. (Mitchell also appears in the novel Strangers From the Sky, but I can't recall off the top of my head if he is specifically referenced as First Officer in that one.)
    OK, back to enjoying the vid.

    • @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics
      @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics  3 года назад +1

      Beta Canon that does NOT contradict Alpha Canon! There is nothing in Alpha Canon to suggest that Mitchell was EVER Kirk's first officer... In fact the entire episode suggests Spock is... Therefore even in Beta Canon, Spock WAS Kirks first officer... Of course, Im sure you now see the constant problem I face with Beta Canon, as it Constantly is contradicting both itself and Alpha Canon!

  • @danieljones317

    Personally, my solution would be to warp 9 to close proximity of the Kobyashi, beam everyone off before the Klingons had a chance to react, and warp out of there on my Z axis when the transfer was complete.
    The other details would be to have the captain of the KM have set the destruct sequence, and have torpedoes in all tubes for the escape.
    Also, all of the crew of the KM would be beamed to the shuttle bay, so there would be plenty of room and no delay in transport.
    Kind of a twist on the Picard Maneuver, but I believe it would work, catching the Klingons with their pants down, so to speak.

    • @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics
      @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics  3 года назад

      Except that even in the 24th century that is dangerous and near impossible (SEE Voyager Maneuvers, and that was beaming 1 person at low warp, not 381 people at high warp...) Besides, how do you know the exact coordinates of the KM? Sure you know what sector it's in, but there MUST be some sensor interference as you cant detect Klingons so close by... Also, it was struck by gravitic mine... Might cause interference which again would make transporting at warp difficult... Theres unfortunately far too many variables that the computer could and most likely would compensate for... A GREAT try though :) Grats on creativity :)

    • @danieljones317
      @danieljones317 3 года назад

      @@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics read it again.
      Warp up to the ship to a dead stop, THEN beam the crew and passengers.
      While the transfer is going on, the helm aligns on the z axis, and then warp out of there on a different course.
      No funky shenanigans like Into Darkness.
      Just real use of real tactics that are safe, and each is conventional on its own.
      As far as the gravity mines are concerned, the mission brief did state that the ship had drifted some distance, not to mention any sensor array on a military vessel should pick up such mines, not to mention the navigational shields on the same military vessel should be enough to keep them away from the hull.
      Unlike a submarine, which would be running blind unless using active sonar, in space, everything is exposed. A minefield would be nearly impossible to hide, unless disguised as some particularly big rocks, and a decoy.....

    • @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics
      @TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics  3 года назад

      That wouldnt work either... The Klingons are lying in wait for you... The MOMENT you warp in, they decloak fire and you explode. There would be NO way, to stop, scan to lock on to the crew of the KM and beam them over before the Klingons could destroy you! Even Voyager in Prophecy needed about 30 seconds to get the Klingons over, thats 30 seconds which you would be open to attack... And you're ignoring the possible interference that KM hitting a gravitic mine in the first place may have caused to the entire area, or sensor/ comm jammers the Klingons might be using... So again creative, but wouldnt work...

    Actually, according to historical sources, it was not Capt. Ramirez who initially went to rescue the freighter it was Capt. Archer. It was also not prior to the Earth-Romulan War rather during it. Capt. Archer decided to turn away as Romulans were setting a trap to capture the NX class's most advanced ship. Decision would haunt Archer but it was the right solution.

    I’d launch a probe to investigate to make shure it wasn’t a trap. Or use long range sensors to do the same. Should it be true I’d have comms broadcast a message that we were on a rescue mission on all frequencies and go to the Kobiashi Maru’s location at maximum warp. Once there i would begin conditioning the rescue operation. Should the enemy attack I would move to intercept putting my ship between the maru and the enemy. should the enemy engage I would use my ship to cover the maru and repair teams. as a part of this I’d lower the shield facing the maru to give more power to the other shields. Once the maru is repaired We’d conduct a fighting retreat back to federation lines. Potentially sacrificing my ship in the process. I’d order my crew to abandon ship and order my crew to rondevous with the maru. Meanwhile I’d give the computer the command to activate what I like to call the last man protocol (this could potentially also be done with the emergency command hologram aswell) and provide cover for the maru and my escaping crew.

    How about the muti-tasking approach? Reroute all the power you can to weapons, shields, and transporters, then beam over Maru's survivors while firing every torpedo you've got at the bridges of the enemy ships.
