In the volcano of 73 here in Iceland people used to carry lit matches when going into basements to detect volcanic fumes, and if the matches went out then you had to get out of the basement or your life would go out in the basement.
It probably wasnt CO2 but it wasn't oxygen which was everything people cared about.

magnesium is so amazing. for one of my chemistry labs, i wrapped magnesium metal with copper wire and submerged it in a 50ml solution of water and hydrochloric acid. i watched as i turned the beaker upside down and the magnesium started to bubble and eventually it disappeared! very cool experiment.

Nothing terrifying about it. That's how iron is smelted. Carbon rips the oxygen from iron oxide and reduces iron. A lot of reactive metals can do this.

That kinda sums up thermite reactions - in which you can substitute magnesium for the aluminum… not that I recommend trying. You get even slightly fancy with thermite and thermite can hurt back (permanent blindness, flying molten metal, etc)

There's a reason why our bodies breath out CO2- its potential use is outweighed by its buildup in the body, especially with respect to its energy use (although it does fulfill some other functions, interestingly enough).
