that was fantastic, reminds me of my darling mother, she could make anything out of anything. She always said she'd rather make a garment from the start than alter, as it was so much more work, so you did brilliantly
Thank you so much for this, I always wondered how to alter slacks. I took 4 yrs Home-Economics and I learned how to alter a pattern, but they never taught us to alter a clothing item. Both Grandmothers were seamstesses, but they passed away when I was young. You don't know how much this helps!!
Thank you very much for showing how to do this. I wish I had seen your video a long time ago. I wouldn't have donated some of my favorite pants if I had known how to do this.
Awesome job. And your assistant was a great sport to help you with this video. It sucks to get older and bigger in the waist...I am right there with her.
Ruth is a great friend. Yesterday she turned up at my doorstep with a massive cup and saucer that is a plant holder. No reason. Just because we are friends. I am very lucky to have a friend like Ruth
I added a piece to the waist band of a pleated skirt after watching your tutorial with Ruth's pants... I understood how she felt ..I just can't imagine were the extra inches on my waist came from either (Chocolate maybe ) I just eased a few pleats and hey presto I can now wear the skirt again...Many thanks really enjoy your clever tutorials....
Such a fantastic tutorial🤗 Thanks to you and special props to Ruth for helping all us gals who are fabulous in our now perfectly fitting waistbands....and can enjoy our wonderful meal!😉
Thanks for the awesome tutorial! I took an older pair of black dress pants that I needed to wear to a funeral and made some of the changes you showed. However, I was still short quite a few inches so I took out the zipper and added a funnel type swatch of black material(it was 3 inches at the bottom and 8 at the top/waist). With a little finegaling, I made them work. So thank you again. It was great to do that in a pinch.
Thanks for the tutorial! I am a beginner and want to learn everything on my own on youtube. Can you (or someone else) tell me what is the tool called at the beginning you used to unpick the band?
That is called a Quick Unpick or Seam Ripper. The brand I love and use is called Clover Seam Ripper. I have had some ladies tell me they still have the same unpick that came with their sewing machine 30 years ago. That is a serious issue, because they become blunt like any sharp object. A blunt unpick can put holes in your garment. I put dates on mine when I open the packet. That way I know which one is the newest.
Thanks so much. This is my problem with EVERYTHING. I have such issues with patterns too. Now I know that there are way's to fix patterns except it seems so complex. With a 37-39-36 I fall into several sizes on a pattern and I just don't know where to go with it and I want to make a DRESS. Ugh. But thanks so much. Maybe I can make it and then alter it?? LOL
Hi Aida You must have missed some of the video. This is possible when the trousers/skirt have pleats or darts that can be released. Sometimes darts have small burn holes close to the end of the dart, which means leaving a very small dart to cover that hole, but other than that, it releases the fabric in the darts or pleats. then all that is needed is an extension in the band. Check out the video again where I unpick after the initial video with Ruth wearing the trousers and showing they are too small. Judith
Hello Judith. very nice tutorial and well detailed I love the clarity of explanations. I just have a question: it's not an stretch fabric, did not the trousers lose its ease when you removed the pleats and darts ?
Hi Judith: I would like to join your program however, I am wondering if once paid for the year can I view all the videos or do you just provide one video a month? I just need further explanation on how your program works. Thanks for your help.
Hi Elsie You can watch all the videos as a member. I continue to add to the videos each month. And you can download all the ebooks including the digital version of Clothing Alteration Secrets Revealed.
I have no sewing skills but watching this video i am hopeful i can take to a seamstress. i only need about 4 inches but my trousers are rayon print that zip up in the back. I. guess i need to find something at a fabric store that may match for the extender?
If you find a person who has been sewing for a while, they may have some fabric. I would talk to them first before buying. Just in case. I have a shelf of fabrics and rolls in another area. So I usually can find something to match for my clients.
Because in my language I am unpicking a seam. I live in Australia and was born in New Zealand. It can be a language thing. The stitching is being unpicked.
I have a beautiful lien skirt that the waist is about 1.5 inches too tight now. The seams are.serged and i dont have extra fabric. I suppose the only way to make it fit again would be to remove the top band completely and make a new one with new or lowered zipper..UGH...
You're good but that's a lot of work. Obviously you're experienced at sewing. I hate sewing and would never try something like this. If you have to pay someone to do this, it would probably cost more than the pants.
True that it could cost more than the pants. With the price of clothes these days, some people might say no to getting it done. I charge around AUD$45 to do this job because it takes just over an hour to do. But then I have some people who just love their pants so much they want to get it done and wear them again. It is all relative to the cost of the clothes. Imagine a pair of very expensive trousers ($300+) spending $45 is not an issue. But a pair of $10 trousers would not be worth it. Consider the amount of money people are earning to make the clothes. In China they are on anything from 0.50 cents per hour (US) some are lucky to get $2.00 per hour. That is why you can buy the clothes so cheaply. Or just slave labor in general, is giving everyone cheap clothes. Sorry I get on my band wagon when I hear someone talk about the cost of clothes. I am proud to charge my hourly rate, and anyone who doesn't want to pay it can walk out my door. No problem.
Hi Judith, thanks for your wonderful comments on this subject. It is all so true. And I particularly love where you added they can walk out your door. I started sewing at age 14. After 40 years of sewing for myself and training staff in a factory I purchased your book and started doing alterations as a small income boost. I have some wonderful regular customers who need all their clothes altered due to height issues or body shape. They are quite pleased to pay for this service which is hard to find. But boy do some other customers whine if they have to pay at a rate of australian wages. I feel if they want a decent job done this is the price otherwise send them back to china to get a cheap and nasty job done ( if they could ) Lets face it we have all fixed clothes made in china. What a minefield! Thanks for great video content. Only found you this morning but I hit that subscribe button straight away. Cheers Cheryl
I am really thrilled to hear you are doing alterations and that my book is of some help to you. I can also relate to training staff. I had a lady call the other day. She wanted to know what I charge for a hem and taking in the back of trousers. I told her between $25 and $35 for the taking in. She was shocked. How could I charge so much when the trousers only cost her $10!!!! LOL. When I explained I charge $40 per hour she hung up. But not after I told her someone was paid .50 cents to make the trousers. It is so sad that people are not aware of what it takes to make a garment. I do understand that cost of living is higher in Australia, but I also know that there are a lot of sweat shops around. And that infuriates me. xxx

Love the smiles at the end, thanks.

Wow you have done a great job. Thanks for sharing, now I have an idea on how to alter my trousers👍👍👍
I added a piece to the waist band of a pleated skirt after watching your tutorial with Ruth's pants... That's what I love to hear. Recycling (altering) existing much loved clothes so that they fit again. Well done. And P.S. I love my chocies too....
Such a fantastic tutorial🤗 Thanks to you and special props to Ruth for helping all us gals who are fabulous in our now perfectly fitting waistbands....and can enjoy our wonderful meal!😉
Really well done. Thank you Ruth and thank you Judith. So skilful.
Thank you Caroline
Fantastic tutorial, seems very easy to make the alterations. Very nice music too.

Another great video! This is so me, my pants fit until I hit about my butt and waist.. I have some many pairs I can alter to fit and wear once again!
This was a great detailed tutorial thank you very much.!!!!
I appreciate the video...I Ruth made me laugh with how excited she was 😎
She is a laugh a minute - our Ruth. She is a great friend.

How come there is no need to add more fabric onto the pants?

Where can I find the color of the clothes that matches with the color of the pants. Thanks
I go to my local fabric store. Not sure where you live or how you buy fabric.
A great addition it was....i will try to
Fantastic job, I'm interested in learning how to make clothes, I study sewing in home economics 40 yrs ago. I know the basics.
Hello Judith. very nice tutorial and well detailed I love the clarity of explanations.
I just have a question: it's not an stretch fabric, did not the trousers lose its ease when you removed the pleats and darts ?
No. This is because of the persons body shape. Ruth has a large tummy. So they fit her perfectly now.
what song is playing? I must buy it!!
The music is called Web Loops Piano Solo. If you google Web Loops Piano Solo you will be taken to his RUclips site

🌺I miss my sewing machine back in Hawai'i.... Living in Washington State.🌺
Excellent instructions, thank you.
Thank you
Why do you use the term unpick instead of un stitch?
Because in my language I am unpicking a seam. I live in Australia and was born in New Zealand. It can be a language thing. The stitching is being unpicked.
We call it seam ripping...lol
"as we get old we tend to extend"
*I've been fat since BIRTH*

Merci beaucoup, je vais essayé sur mon vieux pantalon.
You are very clever!

Nothing like telling the entire planet that Ruth's waist is 39 inches. lol
Ruth could not care less about that. You have to know her to love her.
Brilliant!
wow love this
Ruth looks so angry
No. That's Ruth's normal face. I have been a friend for many years. She is a softy at heart.
