One of Lightfoot's most personal songs, this is about the breakup of his first marriage - a common theme in many of his songs. In the liner notes of his boxed set Songbook, he describes it as "A song about the failure of marriage."
Written in 1969, the song has been recorded more than 100 times, first by Lightfoot himself for Sit Down Young Stranger. The album was not a commercial success, but after the song reached #5 on the US singles chart in 1971, the album was renamed after the song and re-released, reaching #12 in the pop charts
Other recordings include those by Carroll Baker, Glen Campbell, The Bells, Johnny Mathis, Liza Minelli, Barbra Streisand and Andy Williams. Instrumental arrangements have been recorded by Herb Alpert, John Arpin, James Last, The Boss Brass and others.
Can't forget the Stars on 54 version!
Very interesting Metal Mark...I suspect you are a metal guy, who can appreciate the tremendous talents of Gordon Lightfoot. ...I am with ya brother! I grew up with artists like GL, I don't believe he has a bad song...mostly about the life of a "Hobo" or about the Sea, or about trains, a life of freedom, and no commitments....An excellent songwriter. ....But then there is my Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest side...I guess I am saying, that I like Gordo and Sabbath and everything in between....but I do not like rap
Gordon is a Canadian treasure. Bob Dylan considers him one of his favourite songwriters, and was the one who inducted him into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. His songs have been covered by Dylan, Streisand, Johnny Cash and more. He has written more than 250 songs. His rabbit hole is deep. This song is very personal about the breakup and then divorce from his first wife.
I know a lot of Gordo songs, they are all good. Every GL song is is interesting musically and lyrically from beginning to end...he is one of my favorites ( note the American spelling "favorites"), he is a treasure Cheryl
My favorite Canadian import Neil Young, close second Gordon and for fun Martin Short.
Reminds me of my divorce. People get out of synch and you can find it's impossible to find the right words to show them that you're still there, trying to make things work, while they treat you like a stranger, as your soul slowly dies, a piece at a time, until eventually there's nothing left to fight for.
I grew up listening to Gordon Lightfoot. "Sundown" is one of my all-time favorite songs.
Remember this song so well, sad but sincere. Nothing worse than being with someone who doesn't feel the same. Thanks Asia and BJ.
" Nothing worse than being with someone who doesn't feel the same " You said it BKM. Story of my life, again and again...57 now and still alone with only regrets and loss to show for my life.
@@philosopher0076 Hey philosopher 007, your not alone buddy, your not alone.
Truth right here.
He feels like a ghost in their relationship, in that she no longer sees him. While she is expecting a storybook romance. Neither has needs that are being met. So they are lost going through the motions. A beautiful song and one of my favorites. ✌️
That's the best description of this song I've heard yet. It makes pefect sense. Many thanks!
It's sad because we all have been this ghost
This performance is a diamond in a world of pebbles and stones. Gordon Lightfoot was one of a kind. R.I.P.
A brilliant song, musically and lyrically. The setup of books and movies trying to describe a broken relationship. Then the line, " ...but for now, love, let's be real. "
Great description!
He's describing all the fairy tale endings and how they don't meet reality. Well Done James.
Metaphor city! Beautiful.
Lyrically, Gordon Lightfoot is up there with Paul Simon. It just doesn't get any better. He laments here the dissolution of his first marriage, depicting himself as a ghost in bondage whose only hope is to have his wife read between the lines of a three-way script. What's so great about this song is Gordon convinces the listener of his conflicted feelings.
Try Shane MacGowan's lyrics. The Pogues.
He wrote this about the break up of his first marriage. It was an ugly and messy breakup.
Gordon is Canada's poet. Close second is Gordon Downie (RIP) of the Tragically Hip. Another great Canadian band
What about Neil Young?
Leonard Cohen ffs
I consider this song a masterpiece. I was 11 when this came out and just fell in love with the hauntingly beautiful arrangement, lyrics and vocals. This is one of those songs where you close your eyes and let it put you in a trance. Gordon did us all a great favor by giving us this gem! 😎🎶❤
I was 13 when it came out and thought virtually the same as you. My parents were breaking up at the time, so lyrically I came to understand the devastating nature of lost love despite not having endured it myself. I still feel a sense of immense sadness whenever I hear it, however it remains one of my favorite compositions - one I’d take to the “desert island” of songs I’d need if stranded somewhere without companionship. In my mind, it’s about as perfect as a song gets.
An incredible musician, songwriter, storyteller, and singer!
The entire song revolves around the line "Heroes often fail".
And that makes it one of the best written songs that has ever existed! 💯
This song is sublime, and sadly beautiful. You're bringing out all my favorites tonight!
This is a song that touches on a lot of emotions
When you know a relationship is over, but you don't want to admit it to yourself, no less your partner
And you can't understand what happened along the way to fade feelings for each other that used to be so strong
I love how so many songs of the past make people think. Reflect. Look inside themselves.
Not so much today. It's all about what "I got". A totally different message. Says a lot about the times.
TN Old dawg Well said!!
If you pay very close attention, he's actually speaking of her feelings being gone, not his own, anyway I adore this song, his voice, those strings 🥰
This is one the most impactful songs of modern pop era (c. late 1950’s-present). Gordon Lightfoot was a giant among story telling musicians in the 60s and 70s--his impact on modern music cannot be overstated. This song was about the ending of his first marriage (they had children) and you can “Read between the lines” and see the confusion on both his and his then wife’s part regarding their relationship, not only his: “...but the feelings gone and I just can’t get it back” but also hers:“...You’’ll know that I’m just tryin’ to understand, the feelings that you lack.” Great song choice you two!
Stars on 54 covered this in 1998. It is one of the most beautiful, poetic masterpieces❤❤❤
Gordon Lightfoot is a poet and storyteller, who puts verse to melody. His stories are about life and love, tragedy and triumph and the celebration of humanity.
This is a break up song. Whether we are on the receiving end or we are the one breaking up, both are devastating, and it’s hard to admit it to yourself or to the other person. It’s feeling like you have failed.
I hope you try other songs. He is truly a Canadian treasure.
The line that gets me every time: "And you won't read that book again, because the ending's just to hard to take". It's like the woman he's singing about, her heart has been so broken, she'll never take another chance on love.😥
He is still touring, I just seen him May 21st at the Lerner theater in Elkhart Indiana over 40 years in the making. Bought the tickets over 2 years ago but because of covid it took that long before he could finally make it there. Remember he's 83, it was a great show he couldn't quite hold a note as long as his younger days but he still did a great job and the band was fantastic!! So I would suggest if you get a chance if he comes anywhere close to you, go see him. I had a great seats sixth row center. It was worth every penny!! And well worth the wait.
"In a castle dark, or a fortress strong, with chains around my feet, you know that ghost is me - and I won't ever be set free, as long as I'm a ghost that you can see".. 40 years later, it still chokes me up, and I am bound by my love for her. Even though I know I'm the one who f'ed it up. It totally hits home, if you lived it.
Wife here...Love this Gordon Lightfoot classic!!..Beautiful and such poetic lyrics..Thanks for the Amazing insight and selection..!!..
This song made me figure out what a "three-way script" is. Beautiful song. Keep the singer/songwriters from that era coming!
Love Gordon. His acoustic guitar work is first class, and the imagery in his lyrics is too. Not too many can describe a scenario, thoughts, or feelings as well as he does. Just the right words in just the right place. Great post.
I was 5 years old when this song came on the air waves…Thank GOD my Mom and Dad were music people, because I remember this song in the car, and to this day…remember every single word of it❤ Gordon Lightfoot is a legendary singer and songwriter. By the way, I am 57 years old now😊
I purchased this album when it was first released. This is one of my all time favorites. Still hear it to this day. A true balladeer, wonderful! Thank you for this ✌️
The audio production of this recording is phenomenal with two guitars and the incredible strings arrangement.
I love Gordon Lightfoot. This song got me through a few breakups.
Beautiful song relating our fragile humanity . Music taught so many of us to process our feelings. Orchestrated beautifully
In 1987, Lightfoot filed a lawsuit against Michael Masser, the composer of Whitney Houston's hit "The Greatest Love of All", alleging plagiarism of 24 bars of "If You Could Read My Mind"; the transitional section that begins "I decided long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow" of the Masser song has the same melody as "I never thought I could act this way and I got to say that I just don't get it; I don't know where we went wrong but the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back" of Lightfoot's song.
Lightfoot stated that he dropped the lawsuit when he felt it was having a negative effect on the singer Houston because the lawsuit was about the writer and not her.[8] He also said that he did not want people to think that he had stolen his melody from Masser.[9] The case was settled out of court, and Masser issued a public apology.
In the song are the lyrics "And if you read between the lines
You'll know that I'm just trying to understand
The feelings that 'you' lack". He's saying she has lost her feelings for him, not that he has lost his feelings for her. He's saying her feelings for him are gone, and he doesn't know how to get them back. At least that is my take on this song based on the lyrics I quoted above.
That's pretty good!
He's fantastic. Pure talent. We rarely witness so much from an artist, Gordon has it all.
You can’t do a retrospective on 70s music without including this gem.
I saw him this past febuary in my hometown of Champaign Illinois. 1 of the greatness song writers and acoustic guitar players. This is 1 of my strongest memories of a.m. radio outta Chicago Illinois, WLS and this is 1 of the songs that really made me listen to the lyrics and taught me what great music is and took my mind on a journey! Its why music has had such a stranglehold on me in the greatest of ways... music is my world, my sanctuary... my love is music and im married to melody.
I love this song so much....it tears at the heart. IT'S ABOUT BREAK UP. You can love someone but not BE IN LOVE ANYMORE. You don't have the desire to go forward with a relationship any longer. When people grow apart. IT'S DEEP AND AN EXQUISITE HEARTBREAKER.
I'm a picker and a songwriter..I've been a Gordon Lightfoot fan for almost half a century..Been to three of his concerts over the years..Few can match his talent..Timeless Gold .....
This song always reminds me of this film 54 is a 1998 American drama film about Studio 54, a famous nightclub in New York City, Shane comes to New York and becomes a bartender at Studio 54. However, things get complicated when he falls in love with an aspiring singer, Anita.starring Ryan Phillippe · Salma Hayek · Neve Campbell · Mike Myers · this song is used in it near the end.
There are things that you can feel in your mind that there just aren't words to fully convey. He's saying that if she could read his mind she would understand how he feels, much more so than anything he could say about it.
It's a beautiful song that touches a lot of people deeply. He was going through a divorce. Heart-felt emotions.
Gordon, fellow 🇨🇦, 💙 his 🎶🎶 my whole life
Great reaction to a classic song. Gordon is a fantastic song writer with a distinctive sound. He is 80+ years old and still touring! Saw him in Warren Ohio 4 or 5 years ago and his voice has not lost much over the years.
One of the most perfect songs recorded in folk/rock. Not a wrong note anywhere in this song. Even in divorce, you can still have strong feelings in your heart even when your mind is telling you, you can't continue. The classic battle between your heart and head. Nice reaction, thanks.
Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian legend & one of the best singer songwriters. He has had many hits through his long career such as "Early Morning Rain", "Steel Rail Blues", "Ribbon Of Darkness", "Sundown", "Carefree Highway", "Rainy Day People", "Canadian Railroad Trilogy", "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" & many more. I saw him in concert once.
That's the one conversation you can't have!" Oooh I still love you babe but not like I use to"!! That's gonna go down about as well as a French kiss at a family reunion!!
RIP Gordon
I don’t know where we went wrong but the feelings gone and I just can’t get it back…those words break my heart every time I hear them.
1970. The first song whose lyrics I memorized.
Love this song and Gordon Lightfoot’s voice. I actually still have the 45 of this record in my basement. Classic!
Gordon Lightfoot was a poet set to music.
It makes me think that he’s talking about feeling the two of the once had feelings for each other and that seems to have faded and he wants it back but feels stuck as to how to get it back. Like if he said something, no matter what he fears it’s the wrong thing, so he wishes she could read his mind and know what he’s struggling to express. Hey my parents are white and from Minnesota and South Dakota. They had a hard time with communication. I never heard I Love You from them. It just wasn’t part of their vocabulary. They were culturally stunted. I took years of therapy to change that pattern of behavior. They never changed. That’s what I feel this song is about.
I adore this man...one of the best lines of all time from "Sundown" "I can see her lying back in her satin dress, in a room where you do what you don't confess" Gordon is a story teller for the ages. Sublime.
This has always been my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song...and he has so many great songs/hits.
He's one of the GOATs and it's great that Gordon is still performing.
R.I.P. Gordon. May the Lord grant you eternal rest.
RIP Gordon Lightfoot.
'Softly she comes' is such a romantic sweet song and 'Beautiful' is another romantic lovely song that didnt get a lot of recognotion but is masterfull in its lysic and melody. The song 'Whispers of the North' brought me out of a death spiral in a hospital after a motorcycle accident 40 years ago by just having a Canadian Loon whistle at the begining that brought me back to reality from the encroaching dark. I had been a moose hunter in the far north and the sound was so carved into my memory that it brought me back from the brink. The story is in the comments of the video of that song if you are curious.
Some of us realize what is going on - but fight like hell to get it back. It would be a sad world if everyone woke up one morning and began thinking that things are not the same anymore ...then packed their bags because it wasn't quite like how it used to be. Relationships change over time and it's only the young that can change partners because their relationship isn't the same. I did that myself as a teenager and young man - thankfully we mature and see relatiobships in a different way. Obviously abusive relationships are the exception - getting out quickly is the right thing to do.
This is a great song and record, BJ gets it....you push away the negative feelings, but it returns making you even more confused and grasping at ways to get things back. Just my take on things :)
Check out his song The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald . It will give you chills. The Edmond Fitzgerald was a freighter that sank in a horrible storm on Lake Superior, I think it was 1975 . It sank so fast they did not get any radio communication out and all 29 members died. The bodies are still down there -frozen . In the song, Lightfoot sings the Lake never gives up its dead.
Thanks for this wonderful, understated song. Note that one verse started with "If I could read your mind, lov.," Communication and falling apart are on both sides.
A fantastic and underrated singer/songwriter - from Canada. Great voice. Other good songs include: Carefree Highway, Sundown, Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald (story song about the true shipwreck in Nov 1975 on Lake Superior), and Beautiful. quite a few others.
Don’t think he’s ever been underrated.
Hey, y'all! You two appreciate music and songwriting so much! Gordon passed this week. He was a Canadian and musical treasure. Check out Black Day in July. It is about 1967 riots in Detroit that are so relevant in 2023. There are few like our troubadour.
Sundown is another good tune from Gordon.
A heart wrenching song about the love lost between two people married but cannot work out what they need to fix it, if the marriage could be fixed at all. Gordon Lightfoot is a great singer-songwriter who can have a great upbeat song such as "Alberta Bound," a touching love song such as "Beautiful" or even the emotional pain of a cheating lover in "The Circle is Small." For the latter song, I recommend the version found on the "Endless Wire" album. He sings so convincing with the pain in his voice.
Gordon Lightfoot is a troubador, his primary instrument being the acoustic guitar. His music is all about relationships, reminiscing (Old Dan's Records; Did She Mention My Name?) and natural surroundings (Song For A Winter's Night; Summertime Dream). Most of his music is a sweet and melancholy. Country-side, forests, lakes, creeks, rustic cabins. The closest thng to urban I've heard him compose is the tempestuous "Black Day in July." If you listen to more of his music you will be drawn in.
One of many absolute brilliant love songs from the 1970s.Up there with the best.A real tearjerker.
This Gordon Lightfoot classic has been covered by many but he does it best. Gordon is one of Canada's best. He is from Orillia, Ontario!
Probably the best song writers in his-story. This song was written in 1969
He wrote this when He and His Lady had parted. He was deeply hurt when He wrote this song.
I've been following Lightfoot since the mid-60's and still enjoy his music. Like many composers his music is based on his experiences and feelings. I don't try to analyse why he wrote what he did, I focus and how he expresses his mood and feelings.
The seventies were a great era for the singer/songwriter. Gordon Lightfoot is one of the best.
Gordon has been making music for nearly 60 years. His discography is vast, You could do a song of his every day for a YEAR and not get thru it all. I will reccomend Canadian Railroad Trilogy, Minstrel of the Dawn, Cricle of Steel, and Don Quixote.
Don Quixote is such an underrated song. I think in some ways that it may be his best song lyrically.
@@taun856 It is, but he has so many songs! It's really hard to choose!
"I will never be set free as long as I am the ghost that you can't see" come on that's genius.
"I don't know where YOU went wrong, but the feelings gone .... " I heard Gordon in an interview talking about this song & the failure of his marriage, and his daughter heard the song while Gordon was writing it and she told him to change that line to "I don't know where WE went wrong . . ." . . Gordo said it was hard, but he was forced to admit that his daughter was right ; a failure in a marriage was usually the fault of both the husband AND the wife . .SEE ALSO Rick Beato's RUclips Channel and his critique "What makes this song great"
Awww I just LOVE this music❤️🎶🥰 Give me the 60's, 70's & 80's all dayyy!!! I'm here for it!!! ❤️❤️
True storytelling songwriter with a fantastic catalogue of music. I hope you decide to play more of his songs.
RIP Gordon Lightfoot. This song just hits you in the feels. So sad and so beautiful
Thanks for this reaction. This is the first song I truly loved when I was very young, and it helped me recognize the many wonders that music provides. It's often not easy for men to be frank about their emotions when feelings change, and that was more true in the 60's and 70's. This song conveys the helplessness Gordon felt as his marriage dissolved and the difficulties in communicating as a relationship fails. I think Gordon wished things could have been different but he had realized his love had faded, a sucky place to be. Could you please play "Ticking" by Elton John and the video for "All the Old Heroes" by Joseph Arthur?
I grew up with this song on the radio. It was one of my favorites then, it’s one of my favorites now.
An absolute masterpiece! So haunting. Not over produced. Simple. Honest. Emotional.
One of my favourite songs of all time. Love it when you play Lightfoot! Thanks.
This has always been in my top 10 favorite songs ever. Great reaction. Thanks!
If we could read Asia's mind..."Okay Fool quit crying.....wtf did YOU do???Shiiiii......."
lol
I feel like me and BJ are always on the same page as far as lyrics touching is. To me the line “if you read between the lines you’ll see I’m just trying to understand the feelings that you lack.” Describes my relationship with my daughter. Been going on for three hours now but now she’s 18 and today I had her pick up all her stuff. All the lying manipulation. But mostly the lack of empathy and caring. And even then o could handle that (with boundaries) but despite my ex and his wife promising we’d be on the same page after a few weeks that wasn’t the case. You can’t coparent woth someone who undermines you and excuses their behavior. It’s one of the saddest days I’ve had in years. Thanks for reacting and actually listening to the lyrics ❤
God this song is so gorgeous!
One of the BEST STORY TELLERS there is NO doubt.........amazing talent
What was amazing of bands of 60's and 70's is they where great story tellers true poets.❤️❤️❤️❤️
When was that song RELEASED-1970's= the GREATEST DECADE OF MUSIC 🎶
One of his most personal songs based on the break up his first marriage ( written in 1969), this theme was used as late as 1982.
I kept singing "and the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back." After about 2 months of that, I realized the relationship I was in needed to be over. My subconscious playing of that song in my head was telling me what I wasn't yet prepared to tell myself out loud.
A beautiful but heartbreaking song... :(
This was Lightfoot's first hit. The arrangement is quite different from most of his work, which is very much in the folk genre.
Brilliant lyrics and brilliant melody.
A Feel Good Smooth Soul Groove,, The Blackbyrds "Walking In Rhythm"
...Classic...Truth!!
This just brought back memories of when I was a child. ❤️
Believe it or not a Disco version was recorded by Stars On 54. It actually works!
He did a winner called”The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”…
Asia & BJ, what a great night of reactions. Boston, Journey & Gordon Lightfoot. Well done.
A MUST HEAR Uplifting Classic,, Bobby Bloom "Montego Bay"...Nuff Said.
Many great Lightfoot Songs
A great writer. What happens sometimes? You start out in love but many people drift apart. Keep that love alive. He's got a lot of great songs.
When you reach the part, where the heartaches start, the hero would be me.
And heroes, often fail.
