The freeze response explains why people who should be able to function and easily save themselves, do nothing and allow themselves to die or be injured. It is good to think it is normal. I like to think I am not normal. The paranoia that seems to go along with having paranoid escape plans is not in my thoughts except when I am driving or riding a motorcycle. What ifs are a huge part of defensive driving.
I am a freezer I guess. And I can tell you why that is too. It is actually because my brother was a bit of a bully as a teenager. He would do things like scream really loud next to me and try to make me jump. Or act as if he was going to hit me to make me finch. Or point a bb gun at me to get a reaction. I know it sounds like I am being over dramatic, but it really did shape my personality to be unshakable and unmovable. And I don't mean that in a good way. Things like having something heavy fall on me and not doing anything to prevent it or brace myself. Or almost being in a car crash and not even bracing myself for it. Or smacked into someone in a store and not looking up to see if it was intentional or who did it. Freeze isn't even the right word. Lock would be a better word for it. I think a lot of people do this and that it is kind of a self defense agents other humans, I don't really know why it kicks in in those kind of situations, when it isn't another person trying to harm you though.
I used to be instant flight my entire childhood and young adult life...but then I went to the ARMY and now I have a strong fight reflex that has gotten me in trouble before.
What do you think it was in the Army that contributed towards crafting this strong fight reflex? Were there any specific instances that made you become aware of this change cognitively? Any other information you can provide regarding your transformation?
I like to believe I'm a fighter, but how could I ever be sure? I had a tumble in the mountains of Norway, where my instincts kept me alive. I stayed on my feet, tapping small crevices in the rock on my 5 meter fall down, decreasing my speed, enabling me to land on my own two feet. I cannot explain how I did it, my feet moved without my input. It was wet and slippery, yet I still found places to place my feet, despite it being a vertical drop that I was attempting to climb down. Your brain will do things you cannot imagine when your life is threatened. Trust it, never let yourself freeze. You have the power to scan and compute more solutions in a second than you can imagine, so let it happen. Today I can thank an unconscious part of my brain for the fact that I am alive at all.
A calm face a cool quick thought is what I shoot for, every new place I go, I've got to see the whole thing just in case I need to do whatever I may need to (Fight, flee, etc...).
Actually I don't know.. Haven't been to a fight, flee or freeze situation. But I believe il be either a fight or free person.. I hope I'm not the freeze type hahah!!
