    Honestly I looked through the comments to see how well these worked and they were pretty good so I tried all of them and honestly the comments do not show how great this worked. I got rid of so much space and things that I didn't need it's incredible. I needed more space to download the sims and now I can get that and probably many more things I need. Thank you so much this was so useful!! :)

    I just found this today, five years after you posted it, and it did the trick. Cheers for the help. Omni Disk Sweeper found a very large file, game launcher, my son installed and nothing else seemed to show it. I now have the space for the new update. Thank you so much.

      You need to go through old libraries for folders for apps that don't need those files anymore and delete those (Without deleting files that your apps actually need to run), or download an app that does it automatically. [If you have a relocated items folder on the comp I'd start with that.] Starting the comp in safeboot by holding shift as it starts can purge some cache/temp files, but for the most part, other storage is the remnants of bad programming by app devs and apple devs, and there's no quick fix.

      When the Password: request comes up, type the password anyway, (even though nothing is showing up) then hit Return when finished. there is no indication that a password is being entered, and that is intentional.

    After entering the sudo command it says:
    We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System
    Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:
    #1) Respect the privacy of others.
    #2) Think before you type.
    #3) With great power comes great responsibility.
    Password:
    But it won't let me type my password?

    • @NanaNiva

      +Andrew Chiborak It means somewhere you typed something in incorrectly

    • @PhilippeCarphin
      @PhilippeCarphin 8 лет назад

      +Andrew Chiborak Most UNIX and UNIX style tools don't show symbols for key presses in the terminal. That is the case for sudo. Just type it in and it will work. The program is eating up the characters but it's not outputting chars to stdout for you to see in the terminal. The successful or unsuccessful typing of the command coming after sudo will only come into play after successful password entry (meaning that you can type "sudo garbageASDF" and you will be able to enter your password).
      Also, if you type a long command that required sudo privileges but forgot to add sudo at the start, "!!" stands for the previous command entered so doing
      sudo !!
      will do it and is much faster than doing then all the way to the start of the command to add in sudo.
