I've seen those before, your dummy on the beach is a training aid, almost always referred to as Oscar. Some military ship ran a man overboard drill. It was unsuccessful! Poor Oscar! I was told in Okinawa that any bit of land not being used for something else, they grow sugar cane. You would see a small triangle between a house and couple of roads and it would have sugar cane growing, just a small bit of a cash crop. The blackness comes from just boiling the sap longer and getting it more concentrated. It is less refined than brown sugar.
22:58 The Ryukyuan languages found on those islands use a modified Kana system to write words. The ri with a circle is a kind of a special L sound that has a complicated name that doesn't really help in describing it so I won't bother mentioning it here. The Ryukyu languages have a lot more sounds in them than Japanese so the usual kana won't cut it.
I am glad you both are still around on RUclips and making amazing videos around the world. I love seeing the wind blowing Kyde's long hair at the beginning of the video!
45:00 I started imagining this cycle continuing - the other store comes and buys back the bread and marks it up even higher and it keeps going on. Meanwhile, it becomes less and less affordable for the customers, so there it sits - the only loaf of bread on the island - going back and forth between the two stores. 😂
Wikipedia sez: "The combination of an R-column kana letter with handakuten ゜- り゚ in hiragana, and リ゚ in katakana was introduced to represent [li] in the early 20th century."
The sink is practically in the bathtub. 😆 Eric's like, we're on this tiny remote island but there's a tinier, more remote island in eyeyshot that we could be stuck on instead. Let's do that. I'm with you, Eric.
My wife who is Okinawan said she had no idea what that character was. It must be localized only to that exact island. I’m assuming the bottle cap that had holes might have been a sort of pressure release valve in case the can gets overheated to prevent it from exploding. Some of the things to see on the main island. The aquarium, hacksaw ridge (Desmond Doss point) walking shopping street in naha, the main castle being rebuilt that burned a few years ago, American village in Chatan, Alivila resort hotel in Nikko (the buffet is heaven). Heki tepanyaki restaurant with female only chefs. Hilton ritz Carlton in chatan is 5 star food. Too too many others too list. Have fun !!!!!
That curry looks just dandy and I like how the red beans and rice look. I’m consistently impressed with how smart Katie is! If the portions are too small...order MORE! 🍛 🍛 🇯🇵
Old Citroen 2CV cars have a gear shift lever like an umbrella handle sprouting from the dash panel. Sounds so quirky French but it's a direct rod to the gearbox so works well.
30:58 OH, SUGARCANE! When we would visit Puerto Rico as children we'd grab a hunk and chew on it. Not to swallow the pieces, but to just to suck out the sweet! Ah, memories!
The dead body is used by ships (Navy) to exercise man overboard procedures. They throw it overboard and have a procedure to find it again. It seems they did not succeed this time.
@@kydeanderic Oh, these older shows can feel surreal sometimes. The intro music reminds me of PBS in the old days. Sometimes there would be 10-15 minute gaps in programs and they would play this relaxing guitar music.

I wish I had studied linguistics. Languages are fascinating to me.

The character is called Mamoru-kun, he's a common sight on Miyakojima to promote road safety!
i think your black sugar is the cooked down sugarcane juice = molasses. which usually is dark from cooking

That teriyaki chicken has a lot of burdock! Which is cool (and healthy), but unusual.
I definitely want to try black sugar in coffee and I don’t even put sugar in my coffee.
PERFECT beginning 😂😂😂
お二人の動画をいつも楽しく拝見しております。日本人の私よりも色々楽しんでいてうらやましいです。
お二人の旅の安全と健康を祈願いたします。
Lol. 😂. The handle in the car looks like something you would see in a bulldozer or other heavy equipment.

I really miss the old intro's with the music! That was such a good branding for your videos. Hope it makes a return.
Interesting thank you. That accommodation looks like a challenge, is it windowless, I couldn't handle that at all.
i think there was a window on the back wall. i dunno, didn't think about it hahah
The white mollusks on the dead tree on the beach are whelks, I believe. They are edible (and a delicacy) if you harvest them live.
Swedish bread! 🇸🇪🍞😁
That's what I thought he had said!

The handle is kinda like an airplane.

リ゜ specifically denotes an L sound over the R. I wish they would adopt that universal.
I would have expected a nice goat game here on this trip.

38:50 Unfair for kyde to upload a video on youtube, and then accuse the people watching the video of being voyeurs 😂
good intro
16:44 - "look around you" ...sounded like the Squirrel Nut Zippers at first but I think it's OMC's How Bizarre. 😀

I always shudder when I see the map display of that island, as it looks like a wart with whitish skin around it.
What was your record for fastest lap around the island?
