Bus driver in the West Midlands here and yes when we break down up here we also have to remain with the vehicle until an engineer comes out to us usually with a changeover vehicle so we can continue our route, but sometimes there isnt a vehicle in the garage to bring to us so the engineer comes out in the service van which us drivers then drive back to our home garage.
I’m Irish myself (from Rural Ireland, my home County is Meath and covered by Bus Éireann) and have lived 21 years in Manchester U.K. - I’ve heard similar stories about Dublin Bus (Bus Atha Cliath) before - Manchester & Salford (in Greater Manchester) are separate cities, like Oldham, Rochdale, Trafford, Bury, Tameside, Ashton, etc 🇮🇪☘️🇬🇧❤️
They go very quickly from good to that, it only takes a slight nick, or a stone up in there. They’re so easy and quick to change on the Cummins that I’d be surprised if it wasn’t changed annually, ours mostly are out of London

Once I was a student travelling on an old charter bus. I was sitting up the front with some friends. As the driver started to move the bus lurched and the engine stopped. I exclaimed, “he’s stalled it!”, without batting an eyelid, the driver said, “no it broke down”. Meaning his professional dignity was intact.
You’re so right about breaking down out of the way . I broke down at a junction and it caused a few issues with other buses , but they could just get past . Other times I have tried to keep it going till there is somewhere out of the way to stop.
I had a B9 alternator belt go on me when I was doing 40, The bus gave me no warning other than shutting itself down, which losing power steering on a 12 ton bus is a little unnerving at that speed. Had to wait nearly 2 hours for the engineer to get to me (because they decided to send him from the home depot at Oldham instead of the depot at Huddersfield which was around the corner 🙄). When he got there he found out he didn't have the right belt so had to jerry rig one out of zip ties, it didn't charge the battery but it seemed to fool the bus into not shutting down. I got most of the way to the depot and the bus gave in again in the middle of road works blocking the whole road 🤪. We had to have the battery booster kept in to keep the bus going back the rest of the way.
I had a shredded alternator belt on my 1965 route master one afternoon. Thing about front engine buses is that when the belt goes you can feel it slapping the underside of your cab floor. There was enough of the belt left on it that we actually managed to get the bus into London to do the wedding and back home without an issue. Old technology takes the cake once again
I had a coolant flexi hose split on a Scania and the amber coolant light came on so I carried on as its not uncommon for that light to come on but within 1 mile the coolant tempreture needle went to red I broke down 2 stops away from the terminus so it was close enough.
My garage, Westbourne Park (X), said that they could do an enging swap on an RM in half a day. The MCW Metros and Leyland Titans used to take a couple of days though.

It's even worse if a train or guided bus (Cambridge) breaks down as its not like both can go around it. Its also worse if it breaks down on a narrow road to the point a bus or even motor traffic cannot pass a broken down bus
In Peterborough, they have running numbers, but they don't run in order on the route, they run in order of run out, so on the Citi1 running number 101 and 102 could be at different ends of the route.
No-one is supposed to leave a bus unattended when it breaks down, but if you need the toilet 🚽 you’ve got no bloody choice. Could alway leave a note on the door. The narrowing of roads is absolutely absurd! It’s not just a London thing. There’s many places in Leeds that are like that. If a bus breaks down the job just stops. It’s absolutely crazy!
Mate the drivers in Manchester are required to remain with the vehicle..it's not just a London thing. Passenger speaking here ours caught fire one night in Salford, the driver dealt with it brilliantly, Ie the fire was out. It was the engine caught light. Twin DEC or double decker as you say down South -we all got out and simply waited for the next one.
Newcastle the same but mainly in city centre. Outside of it if you need the toilet or pop to a shop to get a drink at a terminus you can as long as you secure the bus and take everything with you.
They no longer give out the blue onward travel vouchers to use on the next bus. This is probably due to the Hopper Fare, but there are cases in which someone would miss out, e.g. a series of buses, the final change being just inside the hour, or a long bus journey. In this case, the drivers have advised just to tell the next driver what happened and it worked OK for me the one time it happened to me. It was a 51 from Woolwich to Orpington, got caught in traffic and terminated after 70 minutes at Foots Cray.

So sat there for an hour or so waiting for a mechanic with a replacement bus. Nice. Not so nice was the second time. A miserable, freezing snowstorm. Looked/felt like the Abominable Snowman when I got to it. Rang depot (and home, to say I'd be a bit late) then waited for nearly four hours until replacement bus arrived. Mechanic said it took him over an hour to get to me (in service running time was about 20 minutes). Instructions from depot was to run light back to Rye sub-depot, where I was based. That took me over an hour for what would normally be about 25 minutes. Then had to drive home, usually about a 20 minute drive - took nearly 2 hours. Would have normally been home around 20.00 on that duty. Got there about 01.45. I loved my job, sometimes.
I remember one of the Arriva buses near where I live once broke down on the approach to a level crossing (fortunately there was a bus stop just before the crossing that the driver parked the bus at) And there was the time I was heading to Blyth with my sister, where a journey that should have been on one bus ended up being across THREE buses, the first one broke down about half way along the route, the next service came along, so all the passengers got on that one, and then just outside blyth, that bus broke down, and all the passengers ended up transferring to a different service that also went to Blyth (same bus company) Although I’ve not known this to happen with a broken down bus I have seen drivers where I live leave buses unattended with passengers on board

Unfortunately some poor unfortunate engineer, will receive a kick up the backside not to mention the amount of road miles lost. Stagecoach engineering management and directors, would scream their heads off because of the penalties incurred. As one engineering director said to me one morning during the early run out. "My lads in Manchester, would not lose me one bloody mile". I do hope that the poor mechanic keeps his job. As for the driver, he should pop off to the nearest toilet, city of London or not. I was at TB (Bromley Garage), so if we were doing a 47 job, and we broke down north of London Bridge, it was always fitters from Dalston or Hackney that came out to you. South of London Bridge, it was either PM, Q or sometimes NX, depending what the nature of the breakdown was, and where you was. Once had a strange breakdown, broke down at Shoreditch Church, last one back to TB, 23:20. Had to wait almost 2 hours before a fitter came out from SF (Stamford Hill). Stampford Hill was an all RM garage, and we had an RT. Fitter could not get it going, so told us to take the RM. My driver had to refuse, as he was not type trained, as TB at the time was all RT. We had to wait till 2:30 am for a fitter from TB could come and pick us up. Nice little 3 hours o/t. Just so glad it was a summers evening when that happened.
Believe it or not I can relate I was a electrician in LT days worked in many garage and I didn’t go out to buses but if a bus had electrics issue I would fix it but driver has to bring bus to garage . It all private not so we don’t mess with other companies buses lol.. thanks for you great comment
It’s the same around the country, buses are work horses everyday but soo little time for maintenance I presume to service a bus will take a whole day or two???

things like this can happen any day to any driver fitters who came out were there quick looks like easy fix not all easy fix are that easy a breakdown like that cant be helped or blameworthy for the driver down to wear and tare due to amount hours the bus your driving been on road non stop
It same in the north east, but maintenance is not a drivers responsibility, I broke down in a similar situation, control said check belts, no way, I'm not an engineer, send some one out, not drivers responsibility
I guess that’s up to the driver, but to be honest I’m ok with it.. Plus I’m a qualified engineer from LT days. Just don’t want to go back to it had a long career change in between.. but driver can refuse I guess. I just think we are a team.. as long as it safe then it’s good with me..

@That Bus Driver Guy The IBus Controller is either Red = CentreComms ( Code Red) Blue = Your IBUS Controller ( Stagecoach) if in doubt Ring You Depot - always better than IBUS controllers
Ibus controller is your local controller for you company, Thats the green button they are based in West Ham depot. Blue is NMCC which use to be called CentreCom, Red is also NMCC that for real emergencies. Blue is also urgent issues plus to report anything that is hindering bus journeys. White button is the PA for passenger announcements. We shouldn’t call our depot only if the MDT is down.. I’m actually a mentor and done 10 years as a bus driver for stagecoach..thanks for you comment
As a mechanical guy if someone had looked at the belts recently they would have seen that they were worn, it doesn’t happen overnight. Hopefully someone just missed it
Here in Birmingham the traffic office log everything for us. We just give them a call then they instruct you on what to do. Paper work in non existent in comparison.
I remember back in 2019 I was on the bus and the bus had a sudden lose of horsepower and was really struggling to get up the hill so the driver had to stop the bus in the middle of the road then he turned the engine off then turned it back on then the bus was was fine for the rest of the trip and recently I was on the bus and the bus came up with the message telling the driver that an engineer needed that bus so a back up bus was brought in and all passengers were transferred over
What happens when it can't get fixed on the road, it gets towed back to the garage. Do then get another bus to take out or does London Transit hve spares drivers /Bus to fill in til you either get moving again or get a new bus?

Then narrow parts are the city of London check points for police were like that in the 1990’s when I drove buses … nothing. To do with covid. Also, city of London police are not a private police service, they are the same as the met, ie COLP, will deal with all 999 calls in that area.
I live near here and they did expand the pavements during covid, not for checkpoints, it goes further down the road heading east and west. And the City of London has its own services, including its own Mayor.
Hi I had both my alternator belts on an old Leyland Atlantean go on a Doncaster to Goole return at night out in the countryside. A so called handyman came out to replace the belts, first thing he did was switch all the lights out! I switched them back on, he tried to switch them back off, it was pitch black where we were what a plonker. No street lights or anything he said his van was enough maybe at the back what about the front!. He was worried about running the batteries flat but he had jumping capabilities in his van. It started first time after replacing the belts.
yes the belts run the water pump it was the slightly rusted sliver pully. Bus will keep runing for a while on battery power to get somewhere. Had it myself
more than 2, there is open toppers, bendy buses, minibuses , coaches, electric buses single and double deckers, plus more, you need to travel some places
@michaelward2082 in Hull I yorkshire where I worked in the travel industry for more than 30 years in the travel industry, there are 2 types of buses. Single and double deckers. One of the companies has an open topper , but coaches were never mentioned .only buses 🚌.
is the Hackeny Whick bus depot still there, I woke up one night on a DD bus there, with no driver, id slumped over so he couldn't see me, I had to break out of the bus and walk to Clapton at 1am, it was a nice night so it was not a big problem,
Why does TfL bus drivers terminate their buses short of the destination even if the bus runs a couple of minutes late then a dreaded announcement is played "the destination of this bus has changed please listen for further announcements" then the next stop comes only to find out that the bus full of passengers is terminating short of its destination. I had this happen to me yesterday on the SL8 Other times I seen 3 SL8 buses terminating at their destination (Uxbridge) one directly behind another. Superloop on the planning stage was a good concept but in operation it is bad and if a snail had a race with a Superloop bus the snail would win

They told me recently during cpc you dont check under the bonnet because im not the engineers and im lucky with my garage we might get the old busses from catford on my route. Without saying what garage im from im in the outpost garage.
I drove buses in London 20 years ago and I didn’t mind it, but it’s probably far more challenging now! I’ve kept my licence “just in case” but I’d go back to it if I had to.
My bus broke down they asked me to look at the engine I said I'm paid to drive it not to diagnose it's faults, send a fitter please you don't pay me mechanics wages
It’s can be an issue, that’s why we suppose to crawl into a bus stop, it’s a constant thing of being aware of your surroundings. TFL need to make passengers aware of this, it would help
Its Dennis bus the alternater light come on low charge or over charge and if problems ones you stop it locks the brakes I had a problem with magnet on ramp had come lose under ramp and moved on motor way come off motorway stopped at lights and safety lock the brakes on so couldn’t move bus
Hmm mate that doesn't look good for the maintenance of your buses surely they have a regular check regime? Pretty sad in this day and age and this sort of thing must drive you (no pun) quite bonkers LOL!!. Plus all that bureaucratic paper work that is crazy.
No drivers don't do mechanical checks they only do visual exterior and interior checks and they aren't allowed to change a headlight bulb, the driver doesn't even check the oil
I did get of the film the video.. lol. If I really wanted to go, I would have walks to toilet. What basically said I can’t come back on a leave the bus and go back to the garage.
Because it was a quick belt change, they done it before I moved off with sub bus.. The brought new built, because I told the controllers that built was shredding. The bus started so all was good.

City of London is separate to wider London, we can leave our bus outside of It. Eg Bermondsey is just about half a mile away, a bus can be left there.

It’s the same around the country, buses are work horses everyday but soo little time for maintenance I presume to service a bus will take a whole day or two???
Usually their is a number of buses off the road for routine maintenance. On a rota system.. but things will still go wrong.

things like this can happen any day to any driver fitters who came out were there quick looks like easy fix not all easy fix are that easy a breakdown like that cant be helped or blameworthy for the driver down to wear and tare due to amount hours the bus your driving been on road non stop

It same in the north east, but maintenance is not a drivers responsibility, I broke down in a similar situation, control said check belts, no way, I'm not an engineer, send some one out, not drivers responsibility
I guess that’s up to the driver, but to be honest I’m ok with it.. Plus I’m a qualified engineer from LT days. Just don’t want to go back to it had a long career change in between.. but driver can refuse I guess. I just think we are a team.. as long as it safe then it’s good with me..

The IBus Controller is either
Red = CentreComms ( Code Red)
Blue = Your IBUS Controller ( Stagecoach)
if in doubt Ring You Depot - always better than IBUS controllers
Ibus controller is your local controller for you company, Thats the green button they are based in West Ham depot. Blue is NMCC which use to be called CentreCom, Red is also NMCC that for real emergencies. Blue is also urgent issues plus to report anything that is hindering bus journeys. White button is the PA for passenger announcements. We shouldn’t call our depot only if the MDT is down.. I’m actually a mentor and done 10 years as a bus driver for stagecoach..thanks for you comment
As a mechanical guy if someone had looked at the belts recently they would have seen that they were worn, it doesn’t happen overnight. Hopefully someone just missed it

Here in Birmingham the traffic office log everything for us. We just give them a call then they instruct you on what to do. Paper work in non existent in comparison.

I remember back in 2019 I was on the bus and the bus had a sudden lose of horsepower and was really struggling to get up the hill so the driver had to stop the bus in the middle of the road then he turned the engine off then turned it back on then the bus was was fine for the rest of the trip and recently I was on the bus and the bus came up with the message telling the driver that an engineer needed that bus so a back up bus was brought in and all passengers were transferred over
If a bus thats seemingly perfectly ok gets swapped its usually for an inspection or to view CCTV footage.

I live near here and they did expand the pavements during covid, not for checkpoints, it goes further down the road heading east and west. And the City of London has its own services, including its own Mayor.
Hi I had both my alternator belts on an old Leyland Atlantean go on a Doncaster to Goole return at night out in the countryside. A so called handyman came out to replace the belts, first thing he did was switch all the lights out! I switched them back on, he tried to switch them back off, it was pitch black where we were what a plonker. No street lights or anything he said his van was enough maybe at the back what about the front!. He was worried about running the batteries flat but he had jumping capabilities in his van. It started first time after replacing the belts.
yes the belts run the water pump it was the slightly rusted sliver pully. Bus will keep runing for a while on battery power to get somewhere. Had it myself
Yeah it’s went into a slow mode to protect bus from overheating. That why I stopped at most convenient place..

There is only 2 types of bus. Single decker or double decker. In hull a double decker is just referred to as a decker.
more than 2, there is open toppers, bendy buses, minibuses , coaches, electric buses single and double deckers, plus more, you need to travel some places
@michaelward2082 in Hull I yorkshire where I worked in the travel industry for more than 30 years in the travel industry, there are 2 types of buses. Single and double deckers. One of the companies has an open topper , but coaches were never mentioned .only buses 🚌.
is the Hackeny Whick bus depot still there, I woke up one night on a DD bus there, with no driver, id slumped over so he couldn't see me, I had to break out of the bus and walk to Clapton at 1am, it was a nice night so it was not a big problem,

Why does TfL bus drivers terminate their buses short of the destination even if the bus runs a couple of minutes late then a dreaded announcement is played "the destination of this bus has changed please listen for further announcements" then the next stop comes only to find out that the bus full of passengers is terminating short of its destination. I had this happen to me yesterday on the SL8 Other times I seen 3 SL8 buses terminating at their destination (Uxbridge) one directly behind another. Superloop on the planning stage was a good concept but in operation it is bad and if a snail had a race with a Superloop bus the snail would win

They told me recently during cpc you dont check under the bonnet because im not the engineers and im lucky with my garage we might get the old busses from catford on my route. Without saying what garage im from im in the outpost garage.

I drove buses in London 20 years ago and I didn’t mind it, but it’s probably far more challenging now!

My bus broke down they asked me to look at the engine I said I'm paid to drive it not to diagnose it's faults, send a fitter please you don't pay me mechanics wages

It’s can be an issue, that’s why we suppose to crawl into a bus stop, it’s a constant thing of being aware of your surroundings. TFL need to make passengers aware of this, it would help

Its Dennis bus the alternater light come on low charge or over charge and if problems ones you stop it locks the brakes I had a problem with magnet on ramp had come lose under ramp and moved on motor way come off motorway stopped at lights and safety lock the brakes on so couldn’t move bus

They do, but sometimes there is no spare vehicle in the depot, hence no means besides somehow proceeding.
No drivers don't do mechanical checks they only do visual exterior and interior checks and they aren't allowed to change a headlight bulb, the driver doesn't even check the oil

Because it was a quick belt change, they done it before I moved off with sub bus.. The brought new built, because I told the controllers that built was shredding. The bus started so all was good.
