I absolutely love this one. I don't mind the slowdown. I like the pace of this, and I like that it's not too difficult. Also... it's soooo cute, and as I have said so many times, the cute games win me over even when they're a pain to play... and this one is not too bad! That's how I feel anyway.
This is one game that would be completely unknown to us outside of Japan had it not been bootlegged and reskinned as “Super Mario Bros. 4”. I played this game back in 2020, and while I kinda enjoyed it, I agree with you that the slowdown is the game’s Achilles’ heel. Maybe this game was released on the wrong console at the wrong time. Should have pitched this to Sega, haha.
I actually bought a pirated NES cartridge of Mario 4 that contains the bootlegged game you mentioned in a weird way it made me aware of this game's existence and honestly would be a hidden gem if it weren't for the botched implementation
Our local mom and pop rental store had a Mario 4 bootleg of this back in the day (early 90s in eastern Wisconsin) and it was ALWAYS rented out. To this day I wonder where they got it and where they copy went.
I still need to play this game someday. I do at least recognize the developers of this named AIM. That's the same company who would develop Faussete Amour for the PC Engine CD, not sure how people feel about that game but it might be better than this.
I wonder if you could mitigate the slowdown by using a modern emulator? Also, the giant feather in Billy's cap seems extremely not Texan to me. I thought he was wearing one of those alpine hats.
I have this on a 10 in 1 Mario themed cartridge, which does at least have all of the actual numbered Mario games. Could never get into it, probably because of the control issues and constant slowdown.
It's jank, but not bad otherwise. I enjoyed playing it... for the most part. To be honest, emulation is a better way to play it. If you fiddle with it a bit, the game's smoother and less PITA.
Hey be nice, this game is a lot of fun...800+games in, maybe a bit jaded? This game is a nice mish-mosh of SMB3 and Sonic mechanics in one, but in a western-ish style looking game with the armadillo etc. I've owned this game twice over the years, second time was for keeps as it's a quite fun title, and has some unique inertia and bounce mechanics which are quite fun.
metal armadillo? maybe sega copied *them* haha... it's too bad the slowdown and dropped inputs seem to ruin what would otherwise have been an okay platformer. I will say most of those transformations seem right out of the dragon's trap over on SMS/PCE. too bad the rest of the game wasn't better.

I agree!!
I completely agree. So happy to see that others feel the same way!

LOOK AT HIS AWESOME LITTLE HAT!!!
I actually really enjoyed playing through this one.
Basically, it needed a 16-bit system...
...Or programmers who were better versed in assembly.
It feels like if they'd just shifted this project to Megadrive, PC Engine, or Super Famicom, it would've been a hit.

Fausette Amour plays incredibly slow but overall it's all right

A hack to use a fancier chip and clean up the code should be possible in principle.
@@EriChanTheRetroGamerNerd That's actually a really smart idea.
I love the idea behind this one, but man, is it jank.
I don't know that I'd call it jank: Conceptually, the game looks good, it's just looks like it's poorly coded.
Noice!

I can def see more romhacks fixing the frame rate and slowdown to make this more solid to play, if people haven't done so already anyway,

I wonder if a rom hacker couldn't make a patch to spruce this game up and polish off all its rough edges.
I think it probably could be salvaged. Or maybe I could play on an emulator with the speed turned up. 😁

This games is great and you are wrong I am so sorry
