It should be noted that while the classic western had fallen out of style there was a certain movie series that was very popular in japan around this time: Back To The Future. The previous year would see the release of Back To The Future III which takes place in the ooooold west. I can think of five cowboy western games that came out after that film in japan. Besides the usual problematic elements (which are also in the US release,) I think this game is cute... but also cruel. They put too many nasty traps in your way.
I'm a bit sad that the "Hero(?) decides to join the villainous gang" option doesn't do anything other than give you a game over, especially given that Streets of Rage was out a month before this and that did it way better.
Ah yes, the 'not-Ganbare Goemon 2' for the Western audiences. It has its fair share of problems, but I didn't hate it, you could certainly find much worse on the Famicom. If nothing else, the ideas behind it are fairly interesting.
yeah it does seem shades of goemon. and maybe a little bit of zelda? at least they seemed to handle the natives better than you might expect for the time. 4:55 WHY though?! never got around to this one but I'd seriously think about it.

This game absolutely had to have started life as a Goemon game.
