When he appeared I assumed he was another new Superboy. But I actually liked the concept. That he's the son of the Big Boy Scout and that he has extra powers... plus his friendship with Demian, seemed a bit different to me.
It reminds me of a story from the 70s (I think) where DC introduced the super sons. The son of Batman and the son of Superman (but in this case the son of Batman took the mantle of his father, he wassn´t just another Robin)
