Dude this is one of the most thoughtful and intelligently put together videos I’ve ever watched. You would have been the greatest teacher on the planet if you went that route.
Instructional designers are teachers.
he IS the best. At the very least, he's the best cooking teacher I've ever been taught by, measured in techniques employed
This is unbelievably helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. I love your videos and hope to one day get mine as good as yours.
Have only just found your 'extra' channel.
As soon as I saw a video length of 38 minutes, I would have clicked no matter the title/ subject matter- because you've established a viewer base that respects and appreciates the 'no fluff' style videos that you produce, and we know that it's going to be 38 minutes well invested.
So, thanks for that.
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on chatgpt, and how it's going to affect the RUclips learning space. I've been tinkering with it the last few weeks and it can create some super authentic sounding scripts, even listing shot selections as it goes. Very soon it's going to get even harder to be able to tell which channels are 'real', and which are just spat out of AI to optimise views.
Have a great day, Shaq. ✌️
My teachers in design school would always emphasize how easy we have it, because we have computers to do certain tricks like color gradients. In their day, they had to make one color of paint smoothly transition into another one, whereas we could now do it with a couple clicks. Every industry seems to have benefited from automation. Photographers can set their cameras to auto, eliminating a big portion of their decision-making process and allowing them to focus on the subject or composition. The other day I got my teeth x-rayed and the dental hygienist used AI software to highlight areas of concern for the dentist to examine.
In blue-collar jobs, we seem to find it easy to treat certain jobs like commodities. Why not automate the work of a truck driver? That's how I feel about, for example, RUclips channels that compare two versions of a product by simply reading off the specs and comparing those specs against each other. The art of a critic or a storyteller should come from repackaging that information- drawing lines around or between disparate figures. A lot of conceptual contemporary art (think bananas duct taped to gallery walls) is beautiful in this way because it's where "I could do that" and "well, you didn't" intersect.
see: "Bohemian Rhapsody - But every lyric is an AI generated image"
ruclips.net/video/-_VYGvHpED8/видео.html
So yes, there will be thousands of channels spitting out millions of procedurally-generated pieces of media every minute. And there will be a disappointing number of people who consume really low-quality media either way. There's a feeling of "I can't believe these suckers are falling for it" that you'll get (probably not unlike watching Bravo or TLC). Outside of that feeling, all I hope for is our toxic relationship to work to come to the center of the discussion. People will lose jobs. You don't have a travel agent in 2023. Owners don't hire sign painters for their shop windows any more. I think if your job can be automated, it should be a net positive. The real problem is that workers never get to see the upside. Productivity keeps ratcheting up while the number of working hours and the resulting wages stay the same.
@@netshaq2 Thanks for your thoughts. Yeah, it's a tricky one. I'm seeing both viewpoints:
1. AI *will* replace lower skillset jobs, &
2. No it won't, never fear! It will just make your life easier and allow you to concentrate on more important things!
It reminds me of that motivational-meme where one side of the bus is colourful and joyful and the other side is miserable and monochrome.
I guess like most things, the 'real world' results are going to be on a spectrum, and we're going to find out pretty soon either way! :/
Cheers
Hey! Fellow Instructional Designer here with a tip on learning objectives and outlining.
I use Blooms Taxonomy to build a few sentences of what the learner should be able to do by the end of training e.g. "Learners will be able to recall X, apply it in Y situation and create Z"
I then colour co-ordinate each seperate section (the recall X, Apply Y, Create Z). When I start writing a rough bulleted outline of how my content/script will go, I will use the same colours to highlight how it ties to my original objectives.
This helps you weed out "nice to know" from "need to know" information, as well as how you structure your content so that the relevant information is layered well.
Holy cow im an instructional designer too and this is incredible info
The absolute GOAT sharing his secrets. Have helped me a lot to consider what is valuable as divorced from what is 'valued' - appreciate you!
😮you got divorced because of shaq? Now that's extreme
“ooh, this croissant is looking mighty sussy baka” is probably the best line i’ve ever seen
A wise man once said this line, and many, many more similar lines.
It is super funny that he referenced the "burritos" video in this because that was genuinely the video that got me interested in his channel and made me a fan
I kind of wish you didn't undercut your own generosity. Yes, you could put in "more" effort into the format of the information, BUT I personally think it's unfair to say that the "lack of effort" put in somehow makes you less generous. If you formatted this into a course or book, I doubt it would have the same level of accessibility as this video you ended up publishing. Dissemination of information for the sake of educating is very generous in its own right. Many people would have tried to capitalize on this in a more financially motivated way, so I really appreciate your generosity. You didn't have to make the video and offer your insight and skillsets, but you did.
This is meant to be a compliment, but I fear it's coming across like I'm invalidating the way you perceive yourself. Anyway, take it or leave it I guess! Sometimes folks have difficulty generating pride, so I just like to highlight things when I can!
Choose your own adventure textbook sounds dope
Sahil, is the patch on your jacket a reference to the Cassius song?
@@tomv8952 yes but its worse
This is really terrific content! I've never been the sort of person that interacts much with videos, more of a silent viewer, but I've liked the video (and commented now). And I'm still left wishing I could like the video at least another 4 times!
I'm a huge admirer of how concise the videos you make are. Now that I know that your expertise is in design and that you have experience as a teacher, it makes a lot of sense why the quality of your content is where it's at. The respect and care that your work shows for your audience really puts you several cuts above the rest. It's unparalleled even beyond the food RUclipsr space.
Above all, thank you for your generosity. Thank you for the careful consideration of your audience's needs. Thank you for your expertise.
I hope this message finds you well.
Internet Shaquille,
I don't like cooking very much. I found you through shorts and found your style so informative that I stuck around, and ended up loving your confusing grocery series.
I wanted to sincerely thank you for making this video. You addressed so many of the concerns I've been having lately and your honesty, morality, and thorough methodology are true inspirations. The idea of generosity in one's work and creating meaning (rather than chasing algorithm) resonate so deeply with me and I've not yet heard these concepts expressed online quite so eloquently and succinctly.
Thank you, sir. I will use this information immediately and continually. This video was an incredible gift.
as someone studying for the CPA exam and neck deep in poorly produced study videos from various study services, this video has showed me all the ways in which those videos fail. a lot of professional study-material providers will do the absolute bare minimum. sometimes videos are listed with a topic in the title that is not covered in the video, while an unprepared presenter fumbles from point-to-point. "boring" information is the kind that benefits the most from thoughtful instructional design
Wow, I had no idea you were an instructional designer! I just got my master's in ID and my first job (I start this month!), and I know how rare we are and how hard it is to explain what this career path is. This video is extraordinarily helpful, and I will be passing it along to my peers!
There are dozens of us!
I could go on about how well your script-editing section was phrased, but the real value for me was at the end about the priority settings on a camera. I've had a DSLR for years and wanted to use it casually but never got the hang of dialing in all 3 settings. Knowing now that I can just automate two of those makes the process much less daunting. I could have read the manual, sure, but in none of my film classes were those auto settings explained to me, so it never occurred that that was a possibility.
Every time I see a video of yours I know I will get something good out of it, and sometimes, I get a bonus
Man you weren't lying about having a great, punchy ending, I never noticed how much that does for me as a viewer.
If you write a book, I will buy it and read it. If your main channel videos didn’t already confirm that for me, this video slammed that point home.
I thought about it briefly, but anything worth writing seems to end up as a video instead
As an amateur sound guy I really appreciate your comment about shotgun mics not amplifying but blocking
The topic around 12:30 is something I struggle with SO MUCH. I’m not making videos, but just when trying to explain something you have a lot of expertise in. The “exceptions” that prove the rule often are invasive thoughts that can be difficult to handle.
Let’s give internet shaq an Oscar for the best instructional video out there. You make me want to make videos.
"showing what you are saying" is power point NO-NO 101.
good call.
I wish my professors during the pandemic would have seen this video
I’ve watched you for years, learned so much, and appreciated your style of content. Imagine my surprise when I, a person who works in instructional design for their 9-5, watched this video and realized that one of the reasons I appreciate your style so much is because I do it on the daily 😅
Same, suddenly all makes sense
As someone who tends to very much enjoy teaching people things but has always seen the mindset of making RUclips videos to be focused on entertainment rather than providing value, this has really shifted my perspective. You are appreciated good sir.
As a professional nerd who is teaching their first college course in Computer Science and absolutely hating the way the course was designed, this video is a gold mine.
I need more longform netshaq content
So grateful this isn't related to a hustle-culture pitch. Thank you for sharing, this has been interesting already and it's only a few minutes in
I have to give a presentation in two days, this is very helpful.
thank you SO MUCH. i was going to spend thousands (i dont really have) to learn how to make educational content for my passion but i feel ready to ust start after watching this and improving as i go.when i make it ~big~ i am going to pay it back to you somehow!!
while it's obvious that you don't write your video scripts with audio listeners/low vision or blind ppl in mind (most people don't this isn't shade), your videos tend to be really good at conveying meaningful instructions to those not or unable to watch anyway, and I think that speaks to the attention you bring to script writing and I appreciate it personally
I. Like. You. So. Much.
Incorrect word usage in RUclips videos is the bane of my existence. Thank you :)
More "instruction design" content please! I enjoy cooking content, but I follow you for learning this craft right here.
It's not yet my birthday but I appreciate this early gift of knowledge, Shaq!
You're right. You are HIM. Go off king!!!
Your mustache looks extra bushy on this channel. Very nice
To bring some of this together with that "get started" tip at the end:
these aren't things that you need to know *before* getting started, having watched this video, you now have the knowledge required to be sensitive to these things and adapt to them once you've started.
You have the knowledge, but you won't build the skill until you challenge yourself to do something focused, and serious.
So far my favorite thing about this video (21 minutes in) is thinking about some of my favorite creators and how they, consciously or not, adhere to some of these tips.
26:27 As someone who gets triggered constantly by people using the word “data” in a singular context (ex. “The data shows”)…. Man, this was relatable. 😭
I've no plans on becoming a youtuber, but it is cool hearing this practical advice that can be applied to even just teaching people
Extranet Shaquille feelin like the real Shaquille~~!!!! 😤😤😤
I greatly appreciate this video. You're in a different dimension compared to the other creators I watch. I realize I need to start consuming less common denominator content, and more of whats intentional and engaging great work shaq.
And don't forget, let's get cookin'!
YES, my god. I had to teach myself DJing to be able to fill in as a venue house DJ/sound guy, and it was perhaps the most maddening hobby I've absorbed.
Finally understand the procore hat!
What are the odds you have any construction videos public?!
There’s so much information here that’s useful even outside of video creation; I’m taking notes as someone who gives live workplace training courses and makes some uninspired powerpoints. Thanks for sharing your instructional design knowledge!
Dangit what's this "extra-net" channel nonsense?? Why wasn't I made aware of this sooner? 😅
hard to express how much i appreciate this, good god
16:37 was so refreshing to hear...I always liked your closing statements but never knew it went that deep.
That explains my immediate impulse to finish my entire sink full of dishes after your instructional video...mind you this was at 10pm too!
Just so you know “I’m like a bird, I want to drive a car” is the only way I hear that song forever after
Crazy how similar your thought patterns to approaching good video content are to MrBeast despite the very different goals you both have with RUclips and content. This video was fantastic and I listened to the whole thing despite having almost no interest in making content - but helped a lot with my thinking on how to teach people software engineering practices
You are the man for putting out content like this
You’re inspiring me! I’m now looking into instructional design! I’m an engineer by trade and I’ve always been frustrated with how technical documents are so hard to follow. I’m usually the one on my team to write the documentation and I’ve always went into the “technical writing” route. I appreciate your generosity with this video. I would devour more if you made it!
I follow your channel because of the concise cooking presentation and witticism. I was expecting this video to just be particular to your script writing and video editing process but I really didn't expect the entire educational-philosophy premise that's going on in the background. You are doing great work by sharing all of these background details! And so inspirational too. Thank you!
bless up for professor shaq
Shaq you’re one of the most thoughtful and intelligent guys on here. Keep doing what your doing
I had no idea of your background, but it makes SO MUCH sense 👌
Dude thanks for the info, it’s incredible. But because of you, I know notice repeatable intros in every single video I watch on RUclips now. Damn you Shaquille for being able to wiggle into my brain so easily
woah, thank you. You ARE generous in sharing your knowledge. This was the first video I've ever watched of yours. You are a breath of fresh air and so eloquent. I love the suggestion of looking at a channel as more of an art form than content. I so agree. I detest watching videos about the "Algorithm" it seriously turns me off creating. Congratulations on all your success. I'm looking forward to watching your other vids.
Great video. Really appreciated your insight into crafting engaging narratives. A lot of this I find is very applicable to my day job in software design. For example, making sure to consider what the user already knows before diving into a new experience. Assuming they're not clueless, but also not expecting them to know everything right off the bat.
The instructional video I didn’t know I needed thank you
Extremely honored to find this channel pre 1000 subs
Who gives a fuck, self serving comment framed as a compliment
This was very insightful, thank you for making all this information free and accessible. I don't make videos but I am a teacher and I've picked up a lot of good ideas here, I appreciate it.
Sick video man. Full disclosure I have no use for this information, but I enjoyed it anyways lmao.
Fantastic video, man. TY for sharing
Thanks! This is great info and helped me focus a bunch of stuff around my video production process.
I don't make videos and I don't want to but I always get very helpful and practical info from your videos regardless. PS-That whipped cream video was from Sheldo's Kitchen . He blew up super fast and then disappeared. His videos were so good,.
Wow! Now I feel like getting some education about teaching! Great job! 👏
Wow, thank you so much. So valuable! I learned a lot!
beautiful video. i love big bro vibes and sharing your geniune enjoyment for the topic in an approachable and non elitist manner. you would definitely be in my ideal blunt rotation...
hey shaq just wanted to say the technical tips part made me very happy. I am loving this second channel so much.
edit: holy shit I learned about manual mode before but I never knew jack s hit about AV/TV
edit edit: sorry I didn't actually finish watching the section before commenting about it. But the tech tips part still made me happy.
Super helpful. I work w/ instructional designers and all of your recs are spot on. Curious (because it wasn't in the script) -- what's your take on formats like interactive e-learning or other kinds of interactive, multi-modal content (ie something you'd make in Articulate Storyline)
Appreciate this a lot
That cardigan is glorious, who makes it?
11 months on, has the Internet Shaquille of interior design emerged on the scene? Cos that would be really handy right now…
I'm in software, and trust me when I say that video is often the worst way to convey information for my field. You have much prereq knowledge, you can skip most, you can't easily search the information. It's a net negative for it
I probably won't use any of this but I thought it was great information!
"is is" makes me crazy too! I once had a huge argument with a friend trying to explain to them why it was nonsensical and they couldn't understand.
I appreciate you sharing all of these thoughts, it feels like this was made specifically for me 🥲
The company I work for created and hired me to the position of “media production specialist”, where I’m tasked with creating all kinds of training and promotional content. There was supposed to be an instructional designer hired on at the same time, but due to budgeting issues it’s only me. This is video has given me a whole new perspective of how I should be thinking about and designing the work I’m doing. Thank you so much :)
A Shaq of All Trades
Cool vid
Real insights about social media at the end of this video. Sometimes I find that people its effect out to be a dumbing down and simplifying, but there is so much language saying nothing! contributing nothing to meaning, only to selection of a "format"
He reflecc
he conecc
But most importantly -
He Netshacc
If we lived near each other, I think we’d be friends.
"I'm him" -Internet Shaquille
Everyone knows that netshaq does have a canned outro: "_________ has been paid to be mentioned at the end of this video"
Im curious if youve made this into a PDF or document format by now? ☺️🤞🏽
You censored the whipped cream melting? I don't remember that being in the original LOL
maybe it's to entice people who want to know which whipped cream won to go watch the original video
I want to double like this! ❤️
Will this be a series????
This might sound dumb, but how much time do you spend writing a script for a video thats around 7 or 9 minutes long? This would give me a framework on how much time I should spend on my own videos and would be really helpful.
The first draft might be done in under an hour, but I usually sit on them for at least 2 months, waiting for new ideas to make their way into the script. I really wish I could streamline the process, as it's my #1 bottleneck
HE IS HIM
The overrepeating of known information is something that I recently noticed with Charles Cornell videos (music theory). He will explain what a mode is in every single video that he even mentions one off-hand. This is so exhausting to someone with a musical background. I have noticed that he has consciously dumbed down his music theory and overexplains things so he can focus on the early highschool demographic - likely to make a push to sell his courses
leaves engagement
Green screen the green screen, huge.
@ 4:57 my girlfriend of 6 yrs broke up with me. Cringe tbh 🙀
17:00 "you might not write 'Gunna'"
Me: but his name is "Gunna"
"You write 'going to'"
Me: oh....
