Here I review the new Insta360 X3, which is the latest camera in their consumer 360 line-up, replacing the One X2. I test the photo and video quality of the new half inch sensor and try some new features like 8K Timelapse and Me Mode.

Honestly, out of anyone here in RUclips doing tech reviews, it's yours that I gravitate towards. And I watch A LOT. I like your no bullshit approach to things and the fact that your editing doesn't make me feel like a 5 year old child with ADHD with the attention span of a goldfish. Keep doing what you do man, honestly man at this point, your reviews are the only videos I can sit through start to finish.
Thanks for saying that. Comments like yours keep me motivated to keep going with this.
The calm demeanor with the blunt quips is absolute gold lmao
I don't write comments often but this is an exception. This review is by far the best I have ever seen for the insta360 x3 that i recently purchased. Congratulations, ... keep up he good work !
Thank you very much for writing that.
Actually a very useful review for me.
I am currently waiting for delivery after ordering insta360x3. I'm so excited.
Thanks 🙏
Thanks. I think you're going to love it. I've been using mine a lot recently.
Well I've watched tons of videos and you're the 1st person to straight admit that you get best videos using software on computers .i was so disappointed with the blurry videos my 360x3 was producing I was ready to send it back. But it looks like I will have to try editing on a real computer and not my phone thanks
I'm happy to help. I get better results exporting from the desktop app than the phone app.
@@Roos-Reviews awesome thanks so much now I know what I have to do find a computer lol
Your voice and accent wow...... Amazing 👍👍👍👍
Brilliant review, the camera looks really good. Hope Insta can send me a camera for review one day😀
best review of this unit I've see so far, with good real world tests.
Thanks very much, Jim.
Nice breakdown. Clear and concise. I already bought one last week, just waiting for them to ship.
Great. There goes $799 Australian. I had been resisting the temptation until I saw this excellent review. I already have the original One X which I've hardly used - it was a great concept and I made some important family videos which take on the feeling of time travel now, when viewed in my Oculus VR headset - but at the end of the day, the video quality just wasn't that good, not to mention the lack of any playback / viewfinder screen. This seems streets ahead. Hmmm... maybe I should hold fire pending the announcement of the Action 3, just in case it's the Action 3(60)... And of course the Pocket 3 isn't far away now. Still, with the price of lettuce and tomatoes here, if I forgo those for a week I could buy all three of those cameras. 🤣
Pull the trigger mate 🙏👌🏻👌🏻
@@TC_Prof I'm about to. I watched all the videos I could find comparing the One X to the One X2 and there's a clear quality advantage in the X2 - and there's a further advantage seen in comparisons between the X2 and the X3. So I'm ordering one tonight. Plus a mic adapter, spare battery, lens cover, memory card, and so on. Ouch.
@@Ozpeter yeah and the accessories. I will go for the bike kit ooopss cold shoe and mic adapter too OMG 😱
Your time travel point is a really good one. I keep intending to go out and capture some 10 minute static 360 videos of places I care about so that I might experience them many years from now.
$600 Canadian stand only.
Just love your creative videos. You deserve way more attention
Thanks for saying that.
Wow, perfectly made review for happy X3 owner.
You definitely know what and how to do to use this cam. Pleasure to watch , thanks !
Thanks for the video, it makes me no regret to have bought the one x2 . Just a tip, you should always clean the lenses before using at night, believe me, it makes a huge difference, in terms of halos. Sorry for my english i'm French .
You covered every pov great review
12:58 - I don't do much 360, but wow...what is does for geometric shapes is fantastic.
Thanks Roo
Your reviews are always great. I don't love the footage from the camera which is not your fault, but it's just washed out, contrasty and kind of like a GoPro. I'd pay more and work with a bigger camera if the quality is better. But this is still cool and thank you for the review. It's getting there for sure.
Thanks a lot!
Nice voice and review. Thank you!
i really enjoyed watching this review! It was very well put together and your voice is soothing and engaging. I just ordered my X3 and it will be here in few days. I just can't wait to discover those exciting features. One thing I wanna say, in another review I saw that the vibration could be turned off in the menu. Was it an update that came out after you posted your video?
Yes they added the vibration disable option to the menu and also made the vibration quieter when on.
A thorough yet effortless review that seems geared mostly to 360 fans such as myself. Might have to consider a subscription.
Thanks Robert.
Best review of this camera I have seen on YT
My first time discovering and and watching your reviews. Awesome! Love the dry hidden humor!!! Keep it up! Although my only confusion was trying to understand if you wanted Sarah McLaughlin singing to you while she was wearing silk pajamas or you were wearing silk pajamas😂
Haha, you might be the only person who noticed that I made that part ambiguous intentionally.
Hey bud from little Airdrie Alberta Canada. First I have to say I truly appreciate your style of review. So relaxed, straight forward, easy going and just talk like you're one of us. Anger management classes? You'd never know it! Whereas every other reviewer in here is so hyped up and on speed and sound like crazy car salesmen just pushing products...sell sell sell. You can't ever fully trust what they say. So again, appreciate your approach.
Now question about the X3...no one is talking about the curved edges in all footage.(fish eye) I absolutely hate that look and wish they'd get rid of that on action cameras. When you edit the footage can you get rid of that with their software and how is it? Does it degrade the footage or do decently?
Thanks!
Thanks for the very kind comment. Being a 360 camera it has to have those fish eye lenses, but you can adjust the field of view and straighten out the look quite nicely in post if you don't like it too wide.
However, the narrower you go the lower the resolution you end up with. So I like to set it a little wider to increase the pixel density and get a sharper result.
@@Roos-Reviewshey no worries, it's much deserved!
Ok, so you can crop in to straighten it out, but can you still move the view all around after?
Yes, in post you have the entire spherical video to play with and can go as wide or as narrow as you want. You can choose a linear mode which corrects the fish eye distortion quite well too and you can point the camera anywhere within that spherical video, all within the software afterwards.
@@Roos-Reviews oh that's great to hear! Thanks so much. I just ordered mine. Had a $40 off deal, better than anywhere else right now. We're heading to Mexico soon and I wanted to have this with me to take it all in!
Wow that was hysterical! Thanks for the laugh! 😅
Bro I felt like I was watching a documentary. Awesome content! keep it up! 🍻
Finally, someone that actually confirmed the pre record feature!!!! That was crucial for me. Now I can return my GoPro 11 and be at peace with the switch :)
Just so you know, pre-record still isn't available on the latest public firmware.
@@Roos-Reviews is this something that they are for sure adding to the x3?
I'm not sure. It was on the features sheet that I was given when my review unit arrived, but it hasn't appeared on the actual device yet. I was told it's coming but I'll have to wait and see.
When watching this, his voice reminds me of watching a "Who Done It Mystery."
Thanks for the review. this version with big screen is better than the x2.
I bought the Insta 360 x2 last year and made some roadbike shots. I like it because it is easy to use and to mount on bike. I uploaded some videos on youtube but i still miss some editing techneques.
Excellent presentation! Amazing VoiceOver style!
Thanks!
Wow.. Thats very amazing action camera.. Great review bro... 👍🏻👍🏻
I agree with you on all points! Very informative contribution! Thank you!👍
Wow Great review and actually pretty funny too! Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
Excellent video!
Thanks
Great video. Love the humour.😂
Thanks for the great review, love your humor!
With the current firmware, you can disable the vibration feedback.
Yes, I can confirm that the latest firmware now lets us turn off the vibration.
Amazing review I so want this camera 📷 thanks for sharing your video keep them coming 👍🏻
Thank you!
I love mine. Still very wary about damaging the lenses however it’s a beautiful camera!!!
I just wish everything didn't look so distorted - it has that action camera look. I think you can choose not to work that way as Brandon Li shows in his tutorial for the X3.
Still what an extraordinary piece of equipment.
PS - I love your reviews so calm and to the point.
Yes it's quite versatile. But the more you zoom in towards a narrow FOV the lower the quality gets, so finding the sweet spot is important.
@@Roos-Reviews do you reckon if your shooting for reels etc you can zoom in enough to get a reasonably undistorted image.
Thanks for this video... because of you I bought a DJI Pocket 1! Would you recommend this insta 360x3 as a follow up small video gimbal and for stills even underwater images??? Do you think DJI pockets have better color science?
This is a good choice for 360 video and 360 photos. It's hard for me to compare it to the Pocket because it's designed for a different type of use. But the Pocket 1 + the X3 certainly would give you a lot of creative options.
@Roo's Reviews Great video, very well put together and informative! I was on the fence about which camera would be my first action camera, now I'm sold! You have a new subscriber here, thank you!🤙
Thank you very much.
cool . thanks bro to share . KIM Cambodia
Man, I love your review with a pinch of sense of humour, especially "grandmother bottom" part.
I am now a proud owner of X3.
Love from Malaysia
Thanks, my friend! I'm happy you enjoyed it. And I hope you enjoy your new camera.
thanks, this video helped me decide to buy it, and not to buy the gopro 11. Thanks Mauro👌
A really great review. Informative and to the point and with some cool sample shots. Well done!👍
My like 551👍
Thanks for saying that.
Nice review Brother. Love from India ❤️
Thank you, my friend!
Most Wlcm. 😊
I came here to see some video samples, somewhat it doesn't look natural if shot longer than a few seconds somewhat sickening to watch. I am not sure if I would make any use of it other than just fill in shots. Longer viewing makes the video unpleasant to watch and the corner details are not very smooth, sharp or clean - become obvious if shown longer than a few seconds. These are my opinions of course. Others may feel different about it. I think, I'll just get a GoPro 10/11 much better video quality and more pleasant to watch after all. Thanks for sharing, nicely done video.
The insta360 x3 is complete garbage. Trust me
How@@johnrpittenger
@@mobilesuniverse I tested it out for hours and even gave it the best possible chance to look good. I even set up studio lights and made sure everything was well lit. I tried every combination of settings on the insta360 x3 and made sure it was always iso 100, but it always had lots of noise and never looked sharp, even in the 4k single lens mode. Even keeping it very wide when viewing did not help. Even after that I gave the 75 megapixel pictures a try, and it was almost worse. I tried exporting the footage differently from my computer with different video formats and it made no difference. I realized at that moment that we are years away from a good consumer 360 camera. I thought about trying the one inch version but have decided I will wait a few generations, it's not worth the time it takes to test it when life is so short.
On a positive note it was stable and I guess it could be good if you were documenting something as long as you did not care about quality.
The fact that you could take night sky videos like that is pretty amazing. What settings did you use?
Jumping to insta360 woot woot! 😊
I'm drawn to this camera because of the cool factor of 360, but i probably won't do much worthy of that view. My main concern with it is how good are details when you zoom in, can you see someone's face clearly?
Best review i've seen yet of this camera. Thanks. Just a question : can you tell me the file size, for like 1mn of footage ?
Yeah sure, so I just took a 1 minute clip at 5.7k 30fps in my living room now and the total file size is 882mb.
@@Roos-Reviews Great, thanks a lot for the info. Next buy for us, for sure ^^
Thanks for the comprehensive review
Espectacular video!
Thanks!
This video is pure poetry. Thank you for the in-depth review, narration and the absolutely stunning shots. 🙏
Thank you very much.
Excellent review!
"I got to skip two of my Anger Management classes this week..."
Thanks for the review! Did you have to connect a charger to the camera to do the star lapse or did you use one battery?
I ran it all night from about 9pm to 7am, so I connected a small 6,000mAh power bank. By morning the camera was still at 100% charge and the power bank was at 70%. So I think I could probably do one without the power bank. I like that idea more because then there's no worry about water getting into the charging port if it rains. I'll try it on the next moonless, clear sky night.
I’m really on the fence about pulling the trigger on the X3, the video quality looks very hit and miss. A 360 camera would be a really handy tool where my GoPro just wouldn’t be able to get the shot I want but I know my GoPro will always deliver the image quality.
You're absolutely right. On the 360 camera we have a 5.7K resolution stretched out over an entire sphere, so after reframing and exporting a normal 16:9 video the resolution is more like 1080p. With the GoPro all that resolution is already squeezed into the 16:9 output frame. The big advantage of using 360 is being able to capture everything at once and frame to your liking in post.
Another great review Roo!
Thanks Scotty! I hope you're keeping well.
@@Roos-Reviews Cheers Roo! Hope things are good with you too. I'm keeping busy beavering away. Been bowled over by the Avata lately so I've been inspired to make the experience even better :D
A really nice review. Informative and to the point and with some cool sample shots. Well done!👍👏👏
Thank you
Good 😊
um love the review and gonna subscribe but what is that alluring music you have starting around 4 min mark?
I make the music for these videos myself and often don't have names for them.
Great review, very funny writing!
Hey, thanks!
3:44 why dual 8k sensors? You only need 4K each. And the resolution is there (72mp photos). The problem is so write and process 8k videos. But this will come with better processing.
360 cameras with dual 4k sensors only produce roughly 1080p footage once reframed and exported. People want 8k sensors so that the resulting footage can be significantly higher than 1080p and fit better alongside all their other footage.
Good job 👌👍
Thanks
Thanks for review...wish they had made lenses screw on/off
I don’t think you actually need a screen, you’ve got all that and more if you connect it to your phone…. I just want to push the button and go
The x3 is far heavier than the x one so at the end of a long 3m pole you feel that
I’m quite happy with the lighter one it fits the job
Later in edit I can do what I want
nice!
Thanks for the review! Very helpful! I would like to ask you a question. As a waterproof camera is it good? How is the quality compared to gopro 11? Can you use it with the single lens underwater? The double functionality 360/single lens looks interesting since I’m interested using both
I haven't tested the waterproof-ness deeper than about 1m but I've seen others take theirs down deeper. Single lens mode works underwater.
I haven't tried the Hero 11 yet but I know my Hero10 has better looking footage and more frame rate options. The X3 can do 360 though and in my opinion is the best consumer 360 camera on the market, that also does single lens non-360 footage of you need it. If you aren't interested in 360 the Hero is the better option.
@@Roos-Reviews thanks. Indeed the camera looks stunning. I’m sure the hero 11 has brilliant features as well. When it’s time to purchase it gets a little confusing with all these new toys recently released ;)
I think this is a great camera with a substantial sensor upgrade.
Yep, it's the best 360 cam I've used.
Hey Roo are you generally happy with the end result. I can’t really tell if the videos produced from all the reviews I’ve watched are good as I see blocky, grainy, ones as well as ones that are good. I wonder if the good ones are highly edited after to make them look good.
As long as there's plenty of light I get results I'm happy with as an amateur. I'm sure there are more expert reviewers who know how to enhance their results with upscaling and noise filters etc. but I just present my footage as it was captured.
Hi there, great review, thanks for that. One thing I couldn't see properly was if your footage/examples were with the lens protectors on or not?
Thanks in advance.
No, I haven't tried them yet.
@@Roos-Reviews Ok no worries. Thanks for the reply.
On the single lens mode, can you record 4K(2160p) at 60fps?
So it stops recording at 30min.?
The One X, One R and One X2, kept recording past 30min but introduced a gap in the footage between 10 and 15 seconds!!
Great video. Doe’s the insta chargeable remote selfie stick work on the X3?
Would taking a regular still-photo always have that fish-eye/fishbowl appearance? Thanks
Well, I have owned my X3 for about three months now and haven't had one problem with it, no bugs, no overheats and no freeze-ups. I have been working a full time job despite being retired from corporate life so I haven't had much time to explore all the X3 has to offer but from what I have experienced I like it a whole heck of a lot better than both my Fusion and Max 360 cameras and yep even my GoPro Hero 11 that has consistently overheated at about the 14 minute mark causing me to lose footage, time on the trail and patients. I am also impressed with the battery life on the X3 and the connectivity.
I am not sure how true it is but I have heard through my tech connections that the next or soon to be next generation X series will have semi permanent replacement lenses if one or both become damaged. I don't know that I would necessarily use that option because I like all the newest tech coming out and an action came, even a 360 will be outdated in a year. I have never sent one of my action cams in for a repair despite treating my gear kinda rough. Have I replaced doors and lens covers on my Hero's? Yep but I have never sent one in for repair, I just replace it with a new one. But replaceable lenses I am sure would be a great option for those who just like shooting once in a while at family events or the occasional hike and don't want to invest in new tech every 12 months.
I have officially switched from GoPro to Insta360. GoPro was a love hate relationship and all their bugs and poor connectivity problems have finally forced me to move on. I tolerated their BS only because what footage I could get in the short amount of time they would work before overheating or bugging out was good. Insta360 seems to have learned from GoPro's mistakes and ran with it.
My experience with the X3 has been excellent too. It's super reliable. All of my GoPros froze more often than I could tolerate.
I just imagined editing software for 360 footage for oculus. That would so awesome!
I edit together my 360 videos in Magix Vegas and view them on the Quest.
is tempered glass already applied to this product after peeling off the plastic?
Большое спасибо за обзор. Все по делу и без мусора
Thanks for a great review. Have you tried capturing moving 360 video with a Eclipse Rover?
I don't know what that is.
Doesn’t make sound when squeezed 😂😂😂😂🙏👌
Ive been waiting for 5.7k60fps for many years. Every year they produce the camera with exact same specs
4:17 music?
How many megapixels and would you recommend short video clips?
Does it have much of a zoom function either in editing or filming mode?
There is no optical zoom (it's not possible with current 360 tech). You can zoom in during post, but quality is lost the more in you go. I actually like to zoom out a bit during post, wider than the default view, because it compresses the pixels closer together and makes the video look even sharper.
@@Roos-Reviews thank you for that response I was hoping I could as I would be using it for my bow self filming
It will be better if the next release (insta360 one x4) will come modular design just like one R/RS.
If it possible, please share link to photo samples. Thanks in advance.
in terms of night shots, would you say this is better than the RS?
edit: this looks a lot better generally all round than the RS. I'm looking for an action camera primarily, that I can use effectively in reasonably low light conditions. This looks to have all the functionality of the RS but smaller and less clunky.
For 360 I prefer using the X3, even though the results are similar, but the form and display are just so nice to use. But in my opinion the RS's 4K boost module has the edge in terms of quality for ordinary non-360 action footage and maybe night shots too. If I could only have one though, it would be the X3.
me too.. complaint...
about general life...
I hear you. Life is a mystery.
You missed the app problems of editing, you can't see a waveform track to quick search for sound bytes, crop and publish, makes it time consuming that you must listen to crop🤦♂️, not to mention you don't have x2 Playspeed when editing.
I don't use the phone app, I use the desktop software to reframe and export the videos, then I use my own video editor for everything else.
@@Roos-Reviews
Yes but the insta360 desktop app does not show waveform track to search for clips, and crops, you still need to play video.
I don't know what you mean, I'm sorry. Hopefully a future version will have what you need.
@@Roos-Reviews
😅 On your basic video editor, when you insert a clip to edit, the app shows a video track , and an audio track.
The insta app shows no audio track.
Any ways, thank you for your time, great video 👍
Ah yes, the Insta360 software is not really a video editor, it's just for reframing and exporting the files so that they can be used in a proper video editor. I wish the Insta app was a bit more useful. It would be nice if we could at least cut the video up into multiple parts and piece multiple videos together.
Registering before use is irritating.
Get a free accessory with the X3 until Nov 30th here (affiliate link):

I have both One X and One X 2. But I only use the One X. Not a fan of big screens or extra weight. I hope in the future they drop the screens and go back to small display with just the menu's. When your traveling and vlogging smaller and lighter camera the better. Lighter also works way better on selfie sticks.
Weak
hmmmm is worth to buy this one when I have one r 360 version? the same resolution but no active hdr
I much prefer the X3 over the One R.
Hi, do you recommend this device for taking good photos?
For 360 degree photos it's great.
Does the editing app allow you to add text?
they need to improve with low light
How's low light footage?
Check out the low light part of the video.
Can you use it while it’s charging? Say like with a battery pack?
Yes, to get the starlapse I kept it plugged in to a power bank all night.
Do you use lens guards, or is the distortion too annoying?
I have a set here waiting to be tested. I just haven't had the time or weather yet.
When you export 360 vids are you up scaling to 4K using a 3rd party program?
No
Can we have save it in a regular view, that is, not a wide angle view?
In Single lens mode you can set it to "wide". That's the narrowest field of view and it's still quite wide. In 360 mode you can reframe the footage afterwards to a less wide result.
