Thanks Jay! I Ordered the #5 Burnin mouthpiece for my new Better Sax Alto. The Burnin mouthpiece was good pared with a Java 2.5 reed, as expected. After playing it a week or so decided I wanted to compare it to the DV HR (why not?!). I liked the Burnin mouthpiece but wow, the DV HR was a big step up for me. I ordered the #6 tip and strapped on a Java 2.5. Better more powereful tone, less stuffy, better control and a much brighter sound. Absolutely love your Alto Sax and thanks for helping me find a great mouthpiece. FYI, I'm 51 and have been playing sax off and on since I was a kid in marching band. I haven't played much the last 10 years (kids, career, etc...) so this new sax and mouthpiece is a new start for me. Thanks!!

Thank you, Jay, for another informative video I aced the blindfold test, which I don't state to brag, but rather to affirm that they do all have distinguishable features. The 1st two were the brightest and the 2nd had a harder edge, which is why I prefer rubber, like you. The HR* (3rd) was much more spread and mellow, and the Burnin' (4th) was again rather strong - a more solid core than the HR*, and you also seem to sound best on it - so I figured it was the one you designed and probably play the most. It is worth noting that these differences are subtle, reinforcing the point that the PLAYER makes a bigger difference in sound than the mouthpiece does. I wouldn't sound like you on any of these, and beginners should be aware that one of these might help them achieve a better version of themselves, but not necessarily make them sound like you sound on the same piece. The key is to find a mouthpiece that you are comfortable on - one that "works" when you play the way you like to play, not one you have to "nurse" by drastically changing the way you blow for high notes versus low notes, etc. Thanks again, Jay, for giving us a glimpse of all these products and for your laid back helpful attitude.

I play the DV metal on my alto and have been pleased, despite being a hard rubber kind of player. I picked it out easily in the blind demo. However, this was a great comparison, and I have to say, I think I need to give the Burnin mp a try! I like the roll over baffle sound over the step in this demo. I will be ordering one soon to see how I like the sound/feel when I play. Fun video. Thanks, Jay!

I picked the correct order in the blind test. I play a HR* 7 and like it, but your Burnin has a bit more punch and I like the boost of mid range tone in the sound...to me and my devices. The new DV HR is very cool and I would love to give it a play along with the Burnin, as I like rubber on alto. The price of the DV HR, after hearing the Burnin next to it would be a factor as well along with how both respond to me. Nice video 🎷👍

I got the blind test right! Holy smokes, never would have guessed that. That JJ DV HR sounds like a perfect balance between warmth and brightness. I own the JJ DV Metal and it can be a bit harder to control sometimes, but I'm very impressed with that JJ DV HR. Might have to consider that one, but that price is hard to swallow for a Hard Rubber.

Jay, great video. My opinion is that the DV HR isn't worth the $450 USD. You were getting the same brightness and fullness and breadth of tone from your Burnin mouthpiece. I've never ever been comfortable on alto, but luckily I found an older Beechler Diamond S6S that I absolutely love to death. If anything happened to it though you can bet I'm ordering your Burnin mouthpiece.

Jay, did you use the same reed and ligature? For me, that has affected sound as much as a mouthpiece swap.
On my traditional Meyer HR, lig and reed changes can lighten or darken my sound as well as changing reed response.
So much of this is splitting hairs, until you're able to actually feel them in your own mouth.
I'd argue that feel can be the more important aspect all other things being similar on paper.

I might wanna compare it with the burning mouthpiece though, because it might be worth spending the extra few bucks. It’s not much more, and it makes sense to be sure, if I could compare the 2 myself.

HR*, metal DV, burning, DV hr is the order I think after one listen. I'm interested to see if I'm close at all haha.
Edit: after listening again I'm shocked. The DV hr sounded the darkest, and least like the metal DV to me. The burning and HR* were pretty much identical. I thought the hr* would be the darkest which is why I put it first in my guess. That metal mouthpiece is special. I was hoping the DV hr would be a closer match.
Edit2: after a couple more listens, the Hr* is rather dull compared to the rest. The Burnin sounds most like the metal DV. The DV hr is interesting; nothing like the DV is my opinion. I just ordered one to try. I normally play a Morgan mouthpiece and I've been looking for a bit more pop/punch.

The problem was that I hadn't raised the price in 11 years. The DV is the most expensive mouthpiece to make by far. I had to raise the price to where it is. As you can tell just by going to the grocery store or out to eat, the pandemic signaled true inflation where all costs of goods soared including labor. I don't feel bad about the price because we still offer the HR* at a very good price when you take into consideration our hand work, quality and consistency.
