    Remember the hilarious scene in Pulp Fiction when John Travolta was educating Uma Thurman on all the blonde bombshells... she thought there were two Marilyn Monroes serving in the restaurant but one of them was Mamie van Doren! "I don't see Jayne Mansfield, she must have the night off' LOL

    This was full of contradictions. First Mamie claimed that Marilyn was “murdered” then she said Marilyn didn’t “straighten out” and paid for her drug use. Well, which was it?!?
    Also, I don’t think they were great friends as she claimed. Marilyn was a private person who kept her inner circle small. These ladies were probably acquaintances at best. Mimi reminds me of another Jeanne Carmen.

    • @PatrickLHawkins
      @PatrickLHawkins 5 лет назад +15

      Jeanne Carmen was a big fraud. While Mamie does not make some of the outrageous claims like Jeannie did. I agree she was not as close to Marilyn as she'd like people to believe. I've followed Mamie on social media for years. She has said things like Marilyn wasn't very nice. She loves it when people tell her she was more beautiful and talented then Marilyn. But let's face it Marilyn was far more beautiful and talented then Mamie could ever hope to be. A few years ago TCM did a mini marathon of some of Mamie's movies. Since I'd never seen them before I decided to DVR them. Each was worse the next. B movies can often times be just as good as A. Some B movies can be so bad they're good. Mamie's movies were just bad.

      @@lancedukel3436 I like Mamie, she's part of pop culture and made her mark and is still going strong at 88. But I think she's been a bit wishy washy about her feelings for Marilyn over the years. And I think she exaggerates when it comes to how well she knew Marilyn. Same goes for Mickey Rooney. He liked to make himself out to be more important in Marilyn's life and career then he ever really was, like claiming he's the one who named her Marilyn Monroe. When it was actually Ben Lyon who helped come up with the name. There's even a photograph of Ben with Marilyn that she signed and wrote thanking him for finding her, naming her and believing in her when no one else did.

But after Doris died, she adores Doris even took part in a recent documentary praising her.

    Mamie Van Doren is celebrating her 90th birthday today, February 6, 2021. She is an American actress, model, singer, and sex symbol. She is perhaps best remembered for the rock 'n' roll, juvenile delinquency exploitation movie Untamed Youth (1957). She was born on February 6, 1931 in Rowena, South Dakota. She is of three-quarters Swedish ancestry; the remainder is mixed English and German. She was engaged to heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey, but broke the engagement upon signing a contract with Universal Studios.
    Producer Howard Hughes discovered Van Doren when she was crowned Miss Palm Springs. The pair dated for several years. Hughes launched her career by placing her in several RKO films

    what always irked me was the story of how allegedly mamie was at a bar in 1962 in new york and as she tells it, the bartender told her that miss monroe is in the back sitting by herself, mamie goes on to say how she went to sit and talk to marilyn and how marilyn was troubled, and sad and talking about being fired from something's got to give and worried about her career and losing her looks and so and so on and how mamie then says that she knew what marilyn was going thru, because her own career and roles were drying up and it was soon to be the end of the blond bombshell era...
    what gets me, whether this story is true and it even happened is the ridiculous notion that mamie saw herself as marilyn's equal in terms of ANYTHING, career, fame, power, etc!....as we all know marilyn was re-hired, was suppose to make "what a way to go" after something's got to give, (which would have been a hit as it was with shirley maclaine in the role) and other A-list movies on the horizon, mamie? um, not so much!....

    I think Mamie's "recall" of Marilyn Monroe changed like the Weather and seemed a bit "imaginary". Mamie's progressive Interviews over the years reminded me of Pinocchio. I suspect that her "knowing" Marilyn was the only thing of interest to the Public and what continued to give her any attention as the years went on. I think it more likely that her "knowing" Marilyn were simply passing "Moments". If you listen to an Interview with Diana Dors, that seemed more of an example of a "very good friend" and a part of Marilyn's extremely small Circle of Friends. But since Marilyn is not around to confirm or deny, whose to say?
    But what can't be denied is Mamie was certainly a beautiful Woman but simply no equal to Marilyn's talent and allure.

    • @akrenwinkle

      Jane Russell is on several RUclipss discussing MM, and it varies. I'm paraphrasing... "Marilyn was totally professional, on time, knew her lines." "No, her problems started much later than Gentlemen Prefer Blonds." "Toward the end of shooting, she started coming in late." I don't think Jane was intentionally lying, I think she was just old and had trouble recalling. Speaking as An Old myself, I know how it is.

    • @naracharlize3792
      @naracharlize3792 2 года назад +2

      @@akrenwinkle There's nothing contradictory in the way Jane speaks of Marilyn. She said Marilyn was ambitious but "very very shy" and had a hard time leaving her dressing room. She added that Marilyn started coming in a little late so she'd stop by the dressing room and pick her up.

    • @akrenwinkle
      @akrenwinkle 2 года назад

      @@naracharlize3792 You can't have it both ways. Either Marilyn was totally professional and on time during the making of "GPB" and her problem with lateness began on pictures afterward... or toward the end of shooting ("GPB"), she started coming in late. And we don't really know was "a little late means." Also, if Marilyn needed someone to stop by and pick her up, that's not professional. Like millions of people, I'm a Marilyn fan, but... there's this gaslighting trend now, although it's probably nothing new. Words have no meaning, anything can mean anything, we're asked to doubt what's obvious.

    • @naracharlize3792
      @naracharlize3792 2 года назад

      @@akrenwinkle Jane said many times there was no problem on the set of GPB. I trust her judgement, she was there. "a little late" means exactly that for Jane, a little late. I think you're being hard on Marilyn here, Jane offering emotional support is not "unprofessional". Why are you trying to create drama when the people who were there said there wasn't any? On her later films, I'd agree.

    • @akrenwinkle
      @akrenwinkle 2 года назад

      @@naracharlize3792 I didn't say Jane was unprofessional; I said Marilyn needing to be picked up was unprofessional. I was not referring to "many times," only to exactly what Jane said in this particular RUclips, and I'm not sure you watched it. Jane contradicted herself. That means she clearly said one thing, then walked it back and said the opposite. She didn't use any big words, so there's no question about it.

    I’m not sure that MVD was ever really that friendly with NJ/MM.
    NJ When she wasn’t “being Marilyn” was introverted, shy and bookish.
    She was also nobody’s fool and would have kept someone like MVD at arm’s length.
    Don’t forget that all these starlets were treated as disposable by the studios and had to fight to keep their places.
    Marilyn had genuine talent and also knew which films to go for and which to refuse.
    She worked her tuchus off to get to an established position where she could carry a film on her own.
    Neither Van Doren or Mansfield were ever in that league.
    Marilyn’s an icon.
    MVD is a B-list movie starlet who never quite made it.
    Jayne Mansfield had a better career and she was all squeals and titties.
    As to Marilyn’s death, I think she accidentally ODd.
    Then there was shenanigans afterwards with people trying to revive her and failing and also her place being ransacked for incriminating info she had on RBK.
    I don’t believe she was murdered or committed suicide. She was an addict and it killed her.
