Billy, what you are seeing when you force the water temp to be much colder, like with what happens when running alcohol from gasoline, is the engine now relying on the oil to keep the parts cool. Hence why in a typical running engine, water temp rises faster than oil temp and usually takes oil temp much longer to rise, but ultimately oil will be slightly higher by about 10⁰-15⁰ in a controlled atmosphere. The more you hammer on it, the coolant stays the same but the oil temp rises considerably. Alcohol doesn't add more heat to the oil, it takes heat away from the water due to latent heat of evaporation. Some big alcohol cars don't run cooling systems due to the cooling effect of alcohol.
Bingo. The IAT, EGTs, and everything else is cooler so the water temp drops a lot. The oil is under pressure, and eating friction no matter what the fuel is, so the oil temp was relatively normal.

That lifter deal is pretty much par for the course on SBF and Lunati lifters. Congrats on the new bullet. Trick Flow has said in the past they run their hydraulic rollers close to 8k on spintrons. It’s no surprise that solids will easily get there.
The reason for increased oil temps on 85 or alky when idling or warm up is because of the high volume of fuel needed with those fuels, and oil dilution past the rings as you would have seen in the past, well that fuel past the rings carries combustion temps with it, there is the reason for higher oil temp.
It is going to SCREAM!!! Can't wait for spring! It's going to be a long winter, time for lots of work, and killer videos for all of us to enjoy! PEACE ✌️
Hey guys, LOVED this vid... On the oil temp vs water temp with e85 vs race gas, if you run a bigger jet for e85, you have a denser charge which will result in higher cylinder pressure which must result in higher bearing load & oil temp. Then you also have the lower lubricity of alcohol and a wetter cylinder to further dilute the oil which will further increase cylinder temps with the oil temp following... So e85 can add oil temp through the cylinders & bearings... but I think more so the bearings. I'll be watching this progress fer sure.
You are 100% correct buy netting more fuel cylinder pressure is higher so the percentage of fuel bypass past the Rings is higher ie diluting the oil so it is thinner ie low ring sealant being a fresh engine I have run E85 ever since it has come out on my race car I found the more I drive it and steam the water out of the oil it tends to hold better property values to the oil but in a boosted application you definitely need to cool down that combustion chamber so E85 is definitely a benefit good to see the boys stepping out of the backyard and getting a bit more professional about what they're doing awesome guys been watching for a while now
I already left one comment, I just wanted to add that I have been watchin src for along time and have figured out with watchin Billy that when he smiles after buildin a motor, u can tell that it's gonna be a awesome build. Sounds like your going to be shifting it at 8200. Now you just need to make sure you have a converter that is going to work best with that combination.
The converter he has now is probably a little too tight download for that engine. His last engine made quite a bit more torque downloads than this one does. But I bet you it's not tight enough up high for when he really starts throwing the boost at it. You can probably do a stater chand it would be OK until he decides to really open it up at the track or no prep at a track.
That's bad ass man I literally was so impatient waiting on this video I really hope you are able to get more footage and get more videos I know you're busy as heck just love watching and supporting you guys
I know your dad won’t like you going EFI but it clearly is time. At the power level you are making having the ability to tune each hole independently is so critical. I know this change may make your dad feel it but unneeded (I am older than your dad and get it) but it is a part of letting go of your kids. It doesn’t mean Billy doesn’t appreciate all you have taught him Bill!
17:26 - The big disparity in the cylinder EGT’s here shows the drawback of a blow through carb set up. It just can’t compensate for any distribution issues inherent in the intake manifold.
I know this sounds crazy; but I’ve seems some combos; where there was injectors with a carb on a nitrous combo (think old pro mod). The injection was just used to trim the cylinder to cylinder differences a bit better and keep to tube up more stable as atmospherics change.....It sounds over complicated but, I could see it as an advantage, given there’s no intercooler on the truck, and a carb does better introducing the fuel further upstream for charge cooling.....just a thought.
Extremely impressive. Goes to show the right parts mated together will definitely improve power. Hope to be there some day with our race program. Have a long way to go but we have to do it on a budget, one or two components at a time with lots of upgrades to make from one end of the car to the other. Can’t wait to see the S-10 make a pass.
Congrats Bob and Billy on a really great engine!! Thanks for sharing the tuning data and knowledge and the trick with those followers to increase oil flow the top of the engine! Graham. UK.
Wow! The whiteboard in the dyno room sure brought back memories! How I adjusted mech cams in the early 80's. Intake closes adj exh, exh opens adj intake.
That never ending smile on Bob's face is priceless! And Billy's reaction was infectious to that 8 thousand hit at 607hp this is going to be one hellof S10 !
Thats what Tick / Grubworm did to his set-up. Make it spin to the moon but control torque to keep the front down. That SBC going to ride with EFI controlling it. You proved a carb and a Gen 1 can compete. I just see this as the next setp. Looking good Brother! 💪
Lake Speed has talked about that oil temp issue many time's in great detail. He says you want to run a specific oil with special additive pack as the alcohol kills some regular additives that aren't made for it. That extra friction caused by the wrong oil generates much more scuffing by the rings which generates the hotter oil temps

You are really going to enjoy your NEW truck now, wow it should really fly! Enjoy you new life with you truck Billy, you've earned it! Can 't wait to see it ru come spring!
@31:04 Bob says"I'd like to see what it would do if we play with the camshaft more,," I hope Billy allows that happen 'cause Bob wants to get the power spread more throughout the rpm scale not just at the top. Get the maximum they can at a lower rpm can only serve to help Billy find the optimum launch rpm/hp.
To add,, Billy mentions he'd like to find where (at what rpm) it stops making power,, I believe I heard Bob mention he'll most likely find that - when it grenades! Anyway, as the guys are discussing torque @31:36 Big Rob mentions he'd like to see that number be around 460/470lb/ft, Billy's mentioned 500. We all most likely would like to see that number (420lb/ft) they're seeing at this stage of tuning go considerably higher. That's where the big blocks have the advantage,, torque. If they can find a better number on the dyno Billy will be a much happier driver.
I cant tell you how happy it made me seeing you guys tune the carburetor with oxygen sensors. If somebody says they tune carbs without one, dont give them a second of your time, or a dollar of your money.
Wow Billy I about lost it when you said take it to 8000 I was at the edge of my seat. And then you ran it up to 8200. I said ya Billy is an 8200 man and it sounds really good. Awsome build

The alcohol keeps the top end cooler but the rest of the motor is still under the friction forces producing heat. The fact the top end gets cooled so fast does not allow it to pull the heat from the oil going thru the motor as fast as it does. Just like a radiator with a thermostat. It holds the water still until it pulls X amount of heat, then flows again to pull in more cooler water to heat soak again. I would assume thru physics if you could keep oil pressure up but flow low on the oil it would balance more as there is longer time sitting in the cooler parts of the motor. Just be sure to run an oil cooler when you switch to the new fuel system now you know there is that much difference. Or put heads together and come up with an oil pan chller system where heat soaks off the pan and gets cooled externally like a computer water cooling system.
Yes!!! Excited to hear about the k-member and some of the other upgrades. The truck has made everything else your family has been able to do possible. I hope you decide to put k-member on Tommy's truck as well while it's down.

Uncle Bob looked happy as hell you and him.both had big smiles on your faces great build can't wait to see it in the truck with all the upgrades
Sounds like a Beast. With Practice comes Perfection. With the knowledge you gain from every build. 5 yrs from now. Youll be one of the best tunerr/ racers in the sport and in drag racing in general. Big big gains. Proud of All who put their parts and wisdom to making it come alive. BEST of LUCK. And thanks for taking us along
Billy that smallblock is set on kill mode.Uncle Bob is the man.Congrats to Tommy on the content with Allison's Dart. Its nice to see all of the knowledge you guys are learning.
Great job guys!! That little 372 is going to be REALLY strong when you add EFI & boost to the combo!! Now is when the hardest work begins as far as trying to get those rear tires to hook just the right amount!! It's going to be fun watching the progress over the winter!! I'm looking forward to the spring & seeing all of the updates for the Nova, S10 & the Falcon. I've got a good feeling this upcoming race season is going to be the best one ever!! Thanks for bringing us along!!
Efi usually loses peak hp
Father like son always good content y’all’s 3 channels r the best out there
Revs like it's got a flat plane crank in it, loves rpm. Sounds incredibly strong, Bob definitely knows his stuff, great job guys. Wonder what she is going to make with 30 lbs of boost. Go fast and be safe. God bless you and your family and friends.
Exactly what a screamer completely different sound like a indy flat plane.
I would figure 30-40hp per pound of boost.
600hp na X 2 atmosphere’s = 1800hp approximately. 1 atmosphere = 14psi
@@kennethwindstein2907 i believe the truck is capable of makin 2000hp
@@bird197196 1 atmosphere=14.7, and w/slight loses, its better to round to 15psi w/turbo, and w/centrifugals superchargers, it takes 19 to 22psi to get 1 atmosphere net power, cause it takes so much power to turn the impellars with the engine. If Billy pumps the boost up to 40psi, it could make 2,200H.p.! Out of a 372cu.in. small block=Wowzers!
That was a good video, thanks for sharing and figuring out the oiling problem on your lifters, good job on passing that information to all fellow racers and small time engine builders.
Look at uncle Bob he looks like a kid in a candy store it look like he was more excited than Billy. Uncle Bob your a rare man indeed. Wow Billy I'm impressed that little 372 is a screamer and definitely looking forward to seeing it in the S10 and making killer hits. Best of luck and I sure hope that 372 don't find your weakest point. As I always say Tommy your doing a awesome job. God bless you all and as always be safe 👍
Awesome! Can't wait to see the numbers. As soon as I get my stroker kit, I'm sending Bob everything to be machined and hopefully have my Mustang done by next season! I thought I had gotten outta racing, but until I started watching all of you all on here Turbo John, Boost is my friend n some more, it's made me to know what I been missing in life, and that is what it was building motors and Racing cars and painting them n do body work. Thank you boyz alot, esp for sharing the content during you all's journey. Stay safe and God Bless!!
Hats off to Bob he's the Man !
I'm curious how it's smaller and will make more power. Is it because your reving it higher?
@@havocracing6019 Heads and cam combo makes the power, shorter stroke helps keep piston speed down in higher rpm so internals has an easier time in high cylinder pressure.
Uncle Bob. He's the man. If he can't do it nobody can. That's that old skool machine work. Good job Bob.
@@chrisjay7736 I understand stand that. But it's missing over 50 ci
@@havocracing6019 shitload of compression
Solving the oil supply problem past the lifters was epic ! Excellent ! Wish I had an uncle Bob in my 318-340 days !
Nothing sounds like a small block at 8200 thats music to my ears.
Hell yes!
nothing on earth can compare to the sound of a screaming small block chev i hope that engine can withstand the beating that is coming
Mine too especially if it's pulling a hard load .a laboring engine sounds great like at tractor and truck pulls
Never been a chevy guy but I give respect 🙌 yaw are truly passionate about what yaw do and yaw got a Hall of fame Dad can't wait til spring truck going to be nassssttttyyyuy
Bob is a great mentor. Patience is second to none. Your new motor combo is a killer piece.
Bob is exactly what I wanted to be as a teenager but my dad was broke so I had to get a job and forget my dream. I also love when bob says “is is is”! Great job guys!
@@benburnett8109 I achieved all my goals too except becoming and engine builder because my career path led me in a different direction. I had to get a job at 12 years old because I wanted braces for my messed up mouth. I bought and paid for mine and my little brother and sisters school cloths for three years until my dad and mom finally got to where they could. I put a motor and transmission in my own truck at 15 so that i had a way to go to work at a place to make more to help. Weak aint in my vocabulary. I did what i had to and still do to make it. You dont know where I came from or the circumstance. Sometimes it just aint in the cards.
OMG I’m so proud of the hard work you guys have done to build this monster motor. With boost it’s going to be insane. Thanks to all of the supporters of this fantastic family and friends.
So good having uncle bob helping you guys he knows his business when it comes to engines man I love them SBC engines.... even bob learning new stuff we never stop learning
Job job gents, you could feel the excitement when that nasty lil thing REVed! Excited for yall. Cant wait to see it run and the upgrades coming on the truck. Loved the collaboration between the different Generations. Nice numbers! Gonna fly out the back door- Get Some Get some haha
OMFG! THIS ENGINE IS A BEAST. could listen to those dyno pulls for hours. Congrats can't wait to see it in the truck.
It’s Like Fine Wine. With Time it only gets Better . Leaps and bounds from where it all Started. 🔥🔥🎥💪
A winning team is built around talent, talented drivers to talented mechanics And SRC has the absolute best craftsman behind the scenes. Kickass video!!
I'm so stoked about the 377 S10 gonna be a big contender when you get done this round.
That lifter deal is pretty much par for the course on SBF and Lunati lifters. Congrats on the new bullet. Trick Flow has said in the past they run their hydraulic rollers close to 8k on spintrons. It’s no surprise that solids will easily get there.
As I posted on the original reveal that Billy was building a 372…
He better be ready for RPMs!!!
Going to be totally different animal.
You are 100% correct buy netting more fuel cylinder pressure is higher so the percentage of fuel bypass past the Rings is higher ie diluting the oil so it is thinner ie low ring sealant being a fresh engine I have run E85 ever since it has come out on my race car I found the more I drive it and steam the water out of the oil it tends to hold better property values to the oil but in a boosted application you definitely need to cool down that combustion chamber so E85 is definitely a benefit good to see the boys stepping out of the backyard and getting a bit more professional about what they're doing awesome guys been watching for a while now
She was getting me with them damn short she had on during drag week
I already left one comment, I just wanted to add that I have been watchin src for along time and have figured out with watchin Billy that when he smiles after buildin a motor, u can tell that it's gonna be a awesome build. That motor sounds like a monster at high rpms. That motor is nothin but a straight bullet.
Now you got to build some custom big tube headers
The sound of that new motor at 6500 rpm+ is wicked. Like its possesed! That thing is gonna something to watch once you get it on boost!
Hell yeah guys💪.. can't wait to see this thing hurting people's feelings
Mr McVay is a Master... so enjoy listening to the years of knowledge and experience when he is speaking...
Y'all are lucky to have him on your side.
Video was AWESUME!!!!
And that's the difference between in a hurry and doing it all right the first time with the best of the best an someone who knows an cares
WOW ! just WOW. All the new upgrades sounding great. You are blessed to have all the knowledgeable people in your corner. Cant wait till spring !
Can't wait to see how the S10 and falcon run with new motors in both of them 😀😀😀😀😀😀
Uncle Bob is the man. I learn so much watching your channel and the old mans. Thanks Billy,Bill, uncle Rob and uncle Bob. You guys are awesome.
I told him to put EFI on it. I’m not interested in babysitting it anymore
@@theoldmansgarage - Wow, that’s a change. Good on you Bill!
“AND STAY OUT!” I laughed so hard, I was crying. Bob is such a good man, and you can tell he enjoys you guys.
Congrats Bob and Billy on a really great engine!! Thanks for sharing the tuning data and knowledge and the trick with those followers to increase oil flow the top of the engine!
Graham. UK.
Wow! The whiteboard in the dyno room sure brought back memories! How I adjusted mech cams
in the early 80's. Intake closes adj exh, exh opens adj intake.
Love the shoutout to 5.0tussin! I watch every upload from both of yall. Cool to see you watch the substandard goat too
That never ending smile on Bob's face is priceless!
She’s sounds pissed af!!!!!!!!! 🔥BOB knows how to build a motor!!!!!
That's cool guys... just keep moving forward... also I would like a Bob McVay t-shirt.... the one he wearing, like it
Britney is famous! that motor should be a ripper in that little truck!
3 Cheers for Uncle Bob, humility & skill are a mighty fine combination. We Love ya Bob...
Brings joy even all the way around the 🌎, state to state and little shops everywhere ,folks smile big when this family is happy doing what they love! Humbled here at MoodyblueMotorsports, Rome ga. Proud of you all!
Definitely the best sounding SBC I have heard! Nice job men!
Loved the video...Uncle Bob is the best...him and your pops are like Aces up your sleeve...excited to see the truck done...should be lots of good content on winter projects...
I’ve been watching since the beginning, gentlemen great job!!! It just keeps getting better and better! Thanks for sharing the experience!
Awsome video again ...Engine turned out awsome..Dyno..what a big help! Keep putting in the work! Great job guys
Heck yeah man.. I've always liked the little s10.. now that baby is going to be a hated thing for others... 607hp at 8200rpm... awesome!!
This is how Legends are made!
The micro attention to the final details is life!
Five star buddy...
In reference- methanol is derived from alcohol, has two less carbons thus the power burn rate . Alcohol thusly will produce more pure power the on burn rate buddy!
All I'm going to say is wow ...
can't wait to see that motor on the S10 she's going to fly... Lol I watch your channel every time you got a new video for the last 4 years you and your family came a long way you keep me and my family going thank you for that..
And after watching further into the video I remembered you saying about keeping the truck street able and your new plans is actually awesome man, nobody leaves on leaf springs like that truck does and minus 300lbs up front and more power!?!?! Recipe to break some hearts and pocket books brother!!!
Awesome stuff guys ! Can't wait to see it in action this spring! Also looking forward to seeing the NXS10 come together. That little 6.2 with those big rectangle port heads on nitrous is gonna make for a fun little street killer. Be even more fun when you do a 4" stroker kit 😎
I love these videos when Billy gets the mad scientist look on his face. Well wishes for the upcoming season
I cant tell you how happy it made me seeing you guys tune the carburetor with oxygen sensors. If somebody says they tune carbs without one, dont give them a second of your time, or a dollar of your money.
Great job guys! Uncle Bob is one awesome guy! You know your stuff thats for sure!!
Wow Billy I about lost it when you said take it to 8000 I was at the edge of my seat. And then you ran it up to 8200. I said ya Billy is an 8200 man and it sounds really good. Awsome build
Glad to see u take a step back and make the proper moves motor sounds awesome
Congrats Billy looking forward to the upgrades and seeing everything come together
What a beast of a SBC motor ! Congrats to everyone that had a hand in the building of this engine. When you are still making steam at 8200... YOU'VE DONE SOMETHING!
I pray once ur done both cars stay together for you guys for long time. Maybe keep count of ur passes and freshen them up for maintenance purposes. Just a thought. Excited also to see Nova.
God Speed!!!
Great video . Cam timing really important. Had great success with my rally cars. Wow what a Uncle Bob ! Legend 👍👌
I cant wait.man i sure love to see billy the kid and that little whistle he makes before he comes flying around all these BIG BLOCKS AND MONEY CARS (GAPPED BY STREET CAR) LMAO. Man i have loved learning so much from you billy old man and honestly jjboss. Big chief... Take these old hot rods clear up function of how these little small blocks are so tough.i have 283 outta old impala with good set iron power pack big flow valves.now jj said go through it like little humingbird. And screw you in 2 sets of 350shots nitrous. Make damn sure i have tough rearend 4-10s tough trani and great brakes. And last of not least best seat harness laundry out back and best of best cage around me ill be fine ...
I know who should get a nice Christmas present, Uncle Bob. He always goes the extra mile to help the Hoskins crew out and get things done right. He lets you bring the crew in to film and make videos. I am sure his business is going to increase a lot as anyone with mechanical knowledge can see he knows his stuff. Love to have a shirt with his logo and it says, where great motors are born.
The dumb guy is a genius! You could see it in his face and reaction! Proud of this! Love you billy the kid! And always on your side! I absolutely love to watch this kind of content, I absolutely love the dumb guy!
It made me happy seeing all you guys so excited about how great that engine sounded in the power it put out really neat to see Uncle Bob so happy about it he's proud Billy's proud it's all good keep up the great work guys and the great videos God bless
Not sure why but Brittany gets everyone. lol. She is good.
I like the way you all share your findings and not trying to hide it all. You all did the right thing holding out on russing for the races.... do it right the first time. And smoke them all.....
posted that because they talk about the E 85 and the effects on the oil . love the channel
