#PikesPeak #NissanGTR #Crash
Flying off the mountain would have been bad. Landing in the water would have been bad. Flying over the water but not off the mountain was as good as that one could get. What a crash.
Randy is one racer I have a lot of respect for as there is no sugar coating the man speaks his mind and tells it strait. I have watched a lot of his driving and my passion is F1 but I also like most track racing and I will say Randy seems to be a natural driver who has a lot of experience to back up his natural feel.
He looks like the guy who was on the donut formula drift team
Shut up
Almost any other spot would have been so much worse! Glad Randy is alright! Hero!
Can't tell from the video footage, but was he wearing a HANS during this? (I assume yes). If so that definitely helped him from getting hurt. A 1G forward hit like that is no joke on the neck
A lesser driver would have still been trying to make the car turn and would have rolled the car over. Making that crash straight took some insane awareness.
😮 I wouldn't have thought about that 😬
Yep, he knew the fuck up was already done and turning would have just made things worse.
Usually when you start to understeer after overcooking a corner the best way to slow down is wheels straight if you want to have the best chance at saving it. It would have been second nature to him but it still shows what an amazing driver Randy is.
@@seboest20 Good point! Much easier to slow a car that's got grip opposed to one sliding.
Watch the video closely. He does "continue the turn", but at that speed the car is understeering ("pushing"). He kept the wheel turned enough to keep the car straight. (with enough seat time, it becomes a reflex. I've had autox'ers yell at my shuffle steering - how do I know where the wheels are pointed?!? (a) mental image, and (b) I'm more concerned with where the car is going than where the wheel is pointed. The wheel on my track car wasn't put on straight (years ago now) and we ran a 16hr endurance race without noticing it, until I went to put it on the trailer - had to look out the window to get the car straight.)
[IMHO, the best way to condition that reflex is rallycross. Go where you never have any any grip to start with.]
Randy Pobst is such a great story teller. I also love how he's humble enough to take the blame when he's wrong.
Humble*
Legend
@@William-Morey-Baker I'm humble enough to admit I used the wrong word
And a great driver
I love that hes a true racer too he isnt scared of the crash or the possibility of a crash. Hes scared of losing the race due to his own mistakes
Randy is the best. He takes full responsibility. Omar would have a mile long list of people to blame.
Pfp is pig wheels?
I love Randys car stories! I could never afford any of his rides, nor qualify for them, but his youthful enthusiasm is golden!
Omar was such a fuckin clown.
Who's Omar
@@suicideslider hyperdrive dude brought an AMG to a drift competition and then when having to drift into objects, used his cardoor.
This is the car I spent 6 months building. We at PPR were so heartbroken but Randy did an excellent job and we couldn’t have asked for a better driver. Pikes peak is an unforgiving lady and will nite even the most seasoned drivers. For those wondering the car is fixed now and you can’t tell anything ever happened.
Sure buddy. I bet you did build it.
What was the extent of the damage?
Got any photos or videos?
I liked that you guys kept my center exit exhaust. My friend’s at BBi we’re at Pike’s texted me that they say my car there and sure enough it was you guys. BBi made the exhaust when I first bought the car in 2008.
@@theenzoferrari458 his channel has car stuff on it, proof enough for me. why do you kids always doubt others?
Randy is like getting a talk from your dad when you are old enough to actually listen and appreciate his advice. Always great!
“I was not responsible about my sleep” well here I am watching VinWiki at 4am so me neither Randy, me neither.
shortly past 3pm for me. Ok I'll hit standby NOW :)
8:28am after a eight our shift in a factory.
How can a man with such a decorated racing history and an incredible reputation from all corners of the industry still boast such a humble, likable personality? It should be illegal.
Kind of did the same thing back in the early 80's in a VW Rabbit. Road went right, I went strait, flew 114ft, luckily it was on Florida sand. Rabbits can fly
01 Galant gtz .. back country road, 25mph turn....100mph,barb wire fence, field kept it to the floor back thru fence Got out Kissed pavement Changed 1 flat and Made it home as Sun was Rising..to be Young and Dumb.. Now im Sore and Slow.lol

FishFind3000 well... yeah. Shhhh.
Randy is the 'friend' evenyone wishes they had.
Randy’s laugh is so infectious that covid is quarantining itself from him.
That was definitely a crazy one. Glad Randy was ok!
A crazy one, but not the craziest.
How far did the evo fall tho?
It was an interesting crash. But is childsplay compared to actual crazy crashes on Pikes. Was a cool story though. But far from "the craziest" crash. Very very very very far.
Yeah...Mr. Foley and his Evo that now sits between two boulders in the PPIHC museum would like to have a word about “craziest”. Lol.
Randy is a class act. I would let him drive my car off a mountain.
🤣
Me too, but my car's not fast enough to clear the white stripe at the edge of the road :(
this made me laugh out loud
Richard Hammond has entered the chat
Is there any chance we can get a Randy Pobst AMA for the next VinWiki subscriber milestone??
I wholeheartedly agree, with one stipulation. Christopher Michaels does the one after that. Deal?
I'd do that for sure, and we'd have a great time.
Ghost Ball : Dude! How cool is that? The Man himself.
Randy Pobst : Thank you for responding. I certainly look forward to it. Fun is an understatement in my opinion so, I hope it will be soon
I was expecting the Jeremy Foley evo
Me to tho
Yeah this isn’t even in the ballpark of “craziest”.
Was looking for Jeremy too 😄😄
775Supermoto Adventures exactly what i thought! i thought this was gonna be the evo crash too 😂
This channel's getting more and clickbaity, even taking randy and turning it into clickbait... Nearly over it
Randy's enthusiasm has always been so infectious. You can't help but smile as he laughs his way through stories. He's easily my favorite driver out there, and has been for years.
Omar could have made that turn with his door open
Samir would have just wrecked the car
@@radude4763 Samir would crash into the start line.
Ed; We need more Randy Pobst stories. He's fun to listen to and tells a compelling tale. Thanks for bringing him to us.
I remember hearing this story before and thinking it was insane. Very glad Randy was okay. Pikes peaks is bucket list, but it can bite so damm hard. If it can get Randy, it can get anyone!
Ed, go check out Jeremy Foley's Evo flying off the mountain. That's who you're looking for, no disrespect to Randy of course.
I could listen to him tell stories all day. Love his candor, honesty, and complete lack of ego. It's going to be fun watching him in the Freedom 500 this coming weekend.
as a colorado native that now lives in hawaii, one of the only things i miss about co is the pikes peak race. everything about it has the makings for an epic day.
Who cares where you live?
Mr. Pobst tells the absolute best stories on Vinwiki! He's been in every cool vehicle, and he's just so down to earth. 👍
This is only the 2nd video of his that I've watched, and I've already learned so much.
One million percent not the craziest.
But coulda been! I got lucky lucky while failing majorly.
@@randypobstofficial you are very humble and a gentleman, something there are not enough of today. Cheers and good luck to you sir. Stay safe.

Awesome story. I could listen to Randy all damn day.
I ran into Randy the year he ran the mustang trans am. Dude is as legit humble as they come. Every bit of awesome that he gets to do he takes 100% advantage and appreciates it.
Good sleep is so insanely important
Randy is always good
As someone who works on lodging at 9300 ft in the Rockies, effects of altitude is a constant conversation with guests during ski season. Even people who live here can be effected by it if they're sick, not eating well, or not sleeping well. I was nodding along with Randy as he listed all the adjustments they had to do to the car to account for altitude and I'm glad that he followed it up with the health effects, too.
VINwiki
thanks for bringing these awesome stories to us!
I saw a few by now and they are really well done
I drove Pikes Peak in a Dodge Caravan. It was still an amazing drive at normal speed. I bought a bumper sticker that said "I like it on top" in large letters, with Pikes Peak in small font underneath.
When Randy Pobst speaks it always sounds like he is sitting on one of those vibrating massage chairs
And wheezy as all hell... that's all I hear is him breathing. Needs to quit smoking
Like a saner version of Scotty Kilmer. 😀
11:38 for the crash footage
2 views. Last time I was this early, CarTrek was premiering. What a great dude Randy is! Thanks Ed for the content. Beautiful.

I remember watching the motortrend vid on the car
Thx for that, Obese!
What a wild experience for Randy!! Glad he was okay!
Flying off a mountain and Randy is sad for his friends that their car is broken.
That's how you know you trust the roll cage :D
I mean it was just a small bank into a bog, a little further up and there’s no roll cage in the world you’d trust.
Randy is right, Pikes Peak was an amazing experience from start to finish. I hand built an electric motorcycle and fought all week to keep it running and win our class on race day Sunday in 2014. The 2am "races" up the mountain towing a trailer with a truck full of crew members on qualifying practice days was something not much talked about but an equally crazy adventure.
I miss the old days when it wasn't all paved. The Monster is legend of those days.
@@djwonderbrad The dirt was better, the pavement is much faster and raises the scare level.
Love Randy. He is very down to Earth and approachable guy. Breaks things down so the average person can understand.
I would love to hear some stories from the guys who ran Pikes before it was paved.
"...my definition of a bad handling car" lol 😂
Always awesome to watch randy race!
This is such a huge moral boost for me right now. I recently crashed a car I love on a corner I've been through a million times. It was really late I was heading home after a drive with friends and just missed my braking point. I was sort of doubting whether it could be fixed, but seeing what they did with this GTR it's made me realise the damage isn't that bad. Stay positive about these things, learn, rebuild and move on!

We need this man on more videos! I like him!
Watch him talking about his 2020 run, in a Tesla 3. Good stuff.
A driving genius and so humble💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Moved out here to run it a year ago and oxygen is key. Especially on bikes
That's a good pointer for even folks just driving their family car up to the summit...Wal-Mart out here sells canned Oxygen, reminds me of Spaceballs, everytime I'm in the Pharmacy section.
Randy Pobst is by far my favorite racing driver. He is super relatable and knows his stuff and also does a very good job of explaining things to where anybody can understand it. Just love the guy. Awesome story! Must be very humbling to be a very experienced driver to still have some mishaps every now and then.
The mark of excellence. Proper wiper control during an incident 👌🏻
Probably the BEST place for an unintended high speed off road excursion at Pikes. One of my all time fav drivers. Great story teller, great explainer of his "seat of the pants" sensation and a superb driver. I raced MX for a few years, if you're not crashing you're not increasing your skill.
I met Randy when he was running up Pikes Peak about 24 years ago. Super nice guy.
Legendary story told exceptionally well.
I doff my cap to you sir, glad you weren't injured.
Best race I ever saw was the PPHC the last year before it was paved. Slept on the mountain at Devil's Playground, and I can attest: yes...you need O2 at that altitude.
That’s an AMAZING story...very glad you were ok Randy! Your the BEST! ❤️👍
"Flying through the air at 77mph"
No amount of braking can save you there. Scary thought. Glad nothing hurt him.
Well, at least he picked the right corner.
Randy has such great vantage points. His ability to narrate that story, keep all factors straight and still take responsibility is admirable. One of the best drivers out there!
Man I love randy pobst, he seems like such an awesome dude and an absolute best of all time list driver
Turbocharged TERROR for most, but Randy was not scared, JUST depressed... LOL Glad he was OK!
Wow 557 comments and not 1 dislike this guy amazes me every video I love how he can be going 140 mph around a track and be able to have a normal conversation what an amazing person thanks for sharing your knowledge with us
Always wanted to go to pikes peak!!!!
Me too. I found it is very expensive. I also want to run the Silver State Classic. www.sscc.us/ Not as expensive. Search for some videos. There are different top speed classes and an unlimited class.
I live in Colorado Springs and the drive in super beautiful. The hill climbs are amazing.
What I love about Randy's stories that you can randomly pull ANY one-liner out of it and still makes a good intro for the video.
Randy is an awesome driver and a down to earth car enthusiast. Love his stories.
Such a humble guy, and great storyteller. Well done.
This Guy Sounds Like Ron From Gta V
Pikes Peak should be on every car guy's bucket list. Drive there, fly there, rent a Turo, do whatever you need to do. Get there at dawn when the gate opens and set your own pace. The scenery is great and your stomach will drop every time you pass the site of a prolific crash.
"Where's the oil?"
"I dunno, up there somewhere"
Grade A evidence of why people die running PP. The organisation of safety is so poor.
That's a matter of "communication". I'd bet no one told the starter _where_ there was a problem. You'd think they'd be on the same radio channel as the rest of the workers, but that's not always the case.
@@jfbeam starter still should have asked where the oil is instead of just sending him up, also should have waited until the mess was actually cleaned up. Yeah sure oil dry is better than running over oil, but that shit is still slick.
It was a concern, for sure. At Pikes Peak, we accept it as part of the adventure, and I always want to go back again.
What class. Randy is such a great storyteller and such a good soul. Thanks for making this video!!!
Great driver and story teller. Thanks!
When he said sharp left and guardrail at first I thought he was gonna say he went off Evo corner. Things probably would’ve ended differently if that was the case
The FAA requires pilots to use oxygen any time the flight goes above 12,500 feet for more than 30 minutes and always above 14,000 feet so it makes a lot of sense that drivers should use oxygen for this run too. In my flying experience I won't go above 11,000 without oxygen because I know from personal experience that is where my mental ability starts to deteriorate noticeably.
RIP Sky King
He looks like the guy who was on the donut formula drift team
Good insights. The oxygen angle is important. I have been involved with a Dakar rally team and we used oxygen even on liaison stages at 5000 metres. Tiredness will get you. It is an issue in Dakar with all the noise at night with people fixing cars and the next morning you may have to do a monster 500 km stage.
That's no B.S. The air gets real thin over 10k. I am a local I've been up there. It makes your head spin.
Thanks for tellem' Pat, I try tell folks as well.
My two favorite racetracks is Pikes Peak and Nürburgring. I’d love to take a pass at both if I can ever build a car to do it.
Sadly they’ve all but narrowed the field down to factory guys now. Not many privateers and the invites are minimal 😒
Went up Pike's Peak in a Ford Ranger last year in September. On the way down there was only one spot to pass and my little Ranger ate two Florida plated Caravans at 75MPH in said passing zone before I got on the brakes for the next downhill curve.
$30 for me and my ex to go up. We had a hell of a time.
@@politicallyerect6086 No, no, this ain't true my friend, you could go get a car, get approved, and run The Peak. Most entrants are not pros. The top ones usually are.
Man, I remember seeing this on RUclips when it first happened. Great to hear the story behind it.
I met Randy in 2014 at the Houston Grand Prix when he drove for Volvo. He’s a really cool guy to talk to.
This is a perfect explanation of Pikes Peak week. The lack of sleep by race day hirts hurts.
Randy rules! I could watch his stories all day.
Randy is fantastic always enjoy listening to him 👍

Man, Randy Pobst is a living legend. Now let’s keep it that way!!
Randy makes you feel like you are sitting shotgun with him.
I saw Randy on his way down the mountain last year, and was lucky enough to get a picture with him!
I saw him in the pits too!
The greatest celebrity I’ve ever met.
I've always wonder if he was using O2 during that race/incident. Great story, a lot of good details, and very nice analysis. I became friends with Austin while he was repairing the post-crash GTR. Great guy.
2 out of my 3 crashes in motorcycles have involved blind reducing radius turns.

GPS enabled ECU that tunes by elevation and air density
In theory it is easily doable but no real reason to use GPS. The engine only cares about the air density as it dictates how much fuel is required to run correctly. GPS information is of limited value because even at a single set of coordinates, temperature and atmospheric factors will cause air density to vary. The engine samples the "air density" with a sensor in the intake so where GPS thinks you are really doesn't matter. Really all modern ECU's tune for air density... elevation is a factor in what that density is but a far less precise way to get the info than intake sensors.
Good video. Told the story well :). Always interested in pikes Peak stories
Remember watching this happen now its narrated..... pretty awesome.
personally i think the feeling of being weightless is the most scary when behind the wheel. i went over a guardrail with 160 kmh. i hit a sign before guardrail and that acted like a ramp sending me into the air and over the rail. i wasnt wearing seatbelt either.. turned out i never let go of the steering wheel and bent it all way to dashboard and broke key with my knee.even popped a star in windshield with my head but had no injurys or pain . when i left the ground everything slowed down. like the matrix.
landed in a wet marsh area what i think is what saved me and the car. it travelled 2 carlength on the nose before coming down. i remember seeing tubes and plastic parts come out when hood folded and the marsh rolling up infront like a roll of carpet.then as rear hit ground the water entered the car.
I've driven up Pikes Peak several times. Last year was in my 2017 Mustang GT. The year before in a 2015 Cooper S. And before that in a FR-S (what a wheezer at 14,000 ft!). You do get dizzy by the time you get to the summit, even in relatively slow passenger cars. The other really tricky aspect is your tires will be nice warm and grippy at the bottom of the mountain and by the time you get to the summit your grippy summer tires are skating around like hockey pucks...especially in my GT.
Being tired is the reason I fell asleep and flew off a cliff in my Nissan Sentra SE-R spec v lost my pride and dreams car that day
Randy has always reminded me of Astronaut John Young. Both have crazy amounts of experience in their respected fields. Both can very much put you in their shoes for any of their absolutely incredible feats of facing danger while having a blast and explaining it `every second of it.
I did the pikes peak on ATV. This was 2006 on 1988 Honda 250r that had a 310 kit. It was a lot of fun. It’s hard to start a 9k go to 15k feet high on a 2 stroke. It was a lot of work to get the jetting in carb.
A great story! I'm glad Randy is ok or we wouldn't be able to hear his great stories.
I had no idea!! I’m glad Randy is ok.
This is wild but that Evo that flew off the mountain a few years back is probably going to be top of the Pikes Peak crashes for awhile, that was insane.
Randy is the shsnit !!! Love Randy stories, simply because his ego is in check. God Bless this channel. Gives me many hours of entertainment ❤❤❤
Randy is a super driver, one of the best of all time. Yet so humble and takes responsibility for his mistake. No excuses. Just a super guy.
