      @vin 950 The American blueberry species have close relatives in Europe and Asia, with similar-looking and tasting berries, and the name "blueberry" often refers to all of them.
      In most European languages, the name of the native berry translates directly to "blueberry", and that same name is often also used for the cultivated varieties of American origin.
      In England, the European berry has a different name: _Bilberry_ , but
      it is likely that the American name for the American berry has its origin with settlers from other European countries that saw them and said "Hey, guys. I've found blueberries!"

    After watching several How Does It Grow videos, I have to say that I love these! They are educational like the things my generation used to watch in science class, entertaining enough to make me want more, professionally cut and edited AND our lovely host is not picture model perfect, but has beautiful natural looks in every video! I would not like these nearly as much if every shot had every single hair pasted down and perfected airbrush makeup, etc. This is... Naturally Vibrantly Beautifully Perfect! Great job on this series!

    Yes, the Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) is native to North America. But the genus Vaccinium has other species that also produce blue fruits which are known to mankind for thousands of years. Most notably the European Blueberry or Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus ) which is native to Europe as well as parts of Asia and North America. I personally prefer Bliberries - they are smaller and they are blue on the inside as well. They have a rich and aromatic blue-ish juice that is ideal for making sweet juices, jams or sauces. Plus, bilberries have been a part of the traditional european herbal medicine for thousands of years.

    Very informative! In my country we call them "bush blueberries" and our "blueberry" is actually the bilberry, it grows everywhere in forests alongside lingonberries (and our land is mostly forest) so people tend to go to the forests to pick them up themselves.
    I personally like the american blueberries more but they're only available as imports or popular garden bushes.

      @JustTakeItInStride 6 лет назад +21

      Oh my god! Thank you for this post! I've always had "blueberries" in Sweden, but when I ate blueberries in America, they didn't taste the same and were so tasteless. I could never figure out why they tasted so differently and just settled on the idea that climate affected their tastes. But after your posts and then looking it up on the internet, I found out they're different berries! I never even knew!

    • @shroomyesc
      @shroomyesc 6 лет назад +12

      +M. Utley
      I've had blueberries, the taste is completely different to bilberries, as blueberries tend to be a bit tart. It's been a while since I had bilberries since their season is in late summer / early autumn but they taste much more "berry-like" and foresty. I would say while blueberries tend to be best enjoyed as is, bilberries are perfect for jams, muffins, pies, crumbles and all sorts of bakery, as their taste gets sweeter in the oven and their colour spreads easily.

    Blueberries are for fun and must be native American. Bilberry (cousin of blueberry) is, though, more liked and in higher demand in Northern Europe. Perhaps, if Americans look around them ) they will find bilberry as well. (Short crawling bushes, green stalks, don't get "wooden brown", small and dark blue-black berries - black inside, stain things around like ink )). No "star" on the end of the berry, more like round circles in the same berry "end" ). Northern thing. Here in Russia, and there in England. and I think - in Norway, Finland, etc. - is believed to be good for eyes. Improves vision. That's why very expensive. Tender in taste, as well. Doesn't keep at all (

    I will never forget the trip I took to the Adirondack mountains, when we had almost reached the summit I ventured off on the less traveled path and found wild blueberries. Instead of the planned pancakes at the summit all were blessed with the freshest most amazing blueberries pancakes I have ever had!!

    Some of the best blueberrys I've eaten I found while hiking around in Fort Mountain state park, in northern Georgia. My wife and me were snacking on them as we walked around, and another hiker asked us, " aren't those poisonous?". lol
    I explained that they were wild blueberrys and very delicious. There also some wild gooseberries here and there.
    edit: I've also had the "Those are poisonous." comment when people saw me eating elaeagnus berries. The're rather tart, with a kinda strawberry flavor. Very tasty, but has a huge pit in the fruit.

    When I moved back to Canada, my native country, in 2002, I was graced with living on a property that had a baker's dozen of high-bush blueberry bushes. The first year I lived there, once they were ripe, my mother and I could pick four, four and a half pounds a night... the next year was much drier, which I didn't realize until it was too late to water the bushes, and I ended up with... _three_ berries. =3

    Love this video or film! And the young lady narrating this & appearing in it also! Loved her upbeat and enthusiastic voice which is very pretty and cute! Along with the music! I am from Pennsylvania, in the Philadelphia suburbs on the Main Line and we used to go to the new Jersey shore as a family… I was more aware of the cranberries as a child! Never got to go to a growing operation at all! Nor for the blueberries! Wish I had gotten to do this!!! And then not too far from there is the mushroom capital of the world in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania!! I got to work in a mushroom house a bit. Thanks again! Very informative…
